Hidden LEDs are diodes.. for clipping the wave form just as ‘regular’ silicon or germanium diode would be used. LEDs of different color and size have a different rectification threshold and knee point character as well as their hysteresis noise, so are chosen for specific sound they make just like other diodes are chosen for their sonic merits. Edit: Just read more comments.. some of the other people have already said this.. Good for you who posted as such to know the details! 👍👍👍👍

1n34 is about .4 volt clip, 1n4148 about .7 volt clip and red leds 1.2-.2.2 volt clip depending in type of led. Another great clipper is a 2n7000 mosfet.or combinations of any or all of them. Pretty cool tone pallet.

SMD/Thru-hole design, construction; SMD's placed via "pick-and-place machine" vapor-phase/thermal reflow soldered, with the thru-hole components and 'heavy stuff' mounted/attached, hand-soldered (in touch-up); probably one pass thru wavesolder appears possible/probable as told by the DIP component(s), (thru-hole devices show no bare copper/other metallic leads). This work meets or exceeds MIL STD 2000 Category "C" Standards, a.k.a. "Mil Spec" (which has since been superseded by the ANSI/J Standards) Foilwork/traces/ground plane(s), with the exception of the barrels/pads are "solder-tinned, masked, then protectively laminated", which maximizes durability. By my best guesstimate, this is a three layer board. Certain areas of this board are (non-uv) conformally coated, others are not; applied by hand in PCB touch-up. These were done at a darn good "board house"; I suspect AIA (Allen Organ Company's PCB subsidiary; possibly, but doubtful, it's *MEI), and, with the exception of the foot-switch, should be damn near bulletproof. aiaaoc.com/ (no better on the planet, than these guys) If you fly commercially, something inside of that aircraft, was built by them! *Mars Electronics International, who manufactures 'bill changers', also has a good 'contract board house'; when they'd show up at our facility, some wiseass would inevitably belch-out "the Man from Mars is here; Mars needs women". (which was true, in their touch up department, because of there superior dexterity) They spent GOOD money on the design/layout of the board, and it's construction. "Heavy" components appear to be "secured by jig" during installation. The foot-switch was added in house, and appears to have been the first sub-assembly installed into the housing, with only one side of the six-pin flex requiring connection. The unseen LED's are most likely there for either of two reasons; as a diode, to prevent 'signal inrush' from certain areas of the board, which would otherwise be subject to the distortion generated (by design), from other components (capacitors would 'clean up' too many of the peaks); secondarily, they are quite probably there as part of a 'test indication/operational verification' function. i.e., in the PCB world, this is just about as good as it gets; and I'm a curmudgeonly, grumpy old bastard!

Two different temperature solders, plus the eutectic in touch-up; the MOSFET/OP-AMP was definitely waved, (actually waved, trimmed, then re-waved to achieve 'no bare leads') as were the higher value caps, and the thru-hole transistors. Probably vapor, not hot air; the smuts were done in the initial op, then the lighter thru-hole stuff was waved, then the heavier stuff was jig-set. My guess is the board is their standard 'multi version capable incomplete sub-assembly", they just change the assortment with some of the thru-hole stuff, and possibly 'drill disconnect' center layers - to achieve different mod levels/product versions. I'm seeing four different 'finishes' on the solder, and I'd bet money that the switch packages were done with either 63/37 "eutectic", and a good brand (Alpha, or Kester), or they've found 'the magic non-pb bullet', for add-on's/touch-up, and I've been outta the loop just long enough to be unaware of it. Buy a Metcal unit, btw! I'll have to go swimming around Techni-Tool's site, as this leaves me in search of an answer.

My guess on the circutry is: the LEDs you can´t see are a diode clipper, and the dual OpAmp is for the "lightly" distortion, and then you want more, they kick in, probably through a resistor divider circuit. May the second OpAmp do the final output as a voltage follower, or it act as another "last step" distortion....

Surface mount doesn't mean not handmade... one of my college jobs involved populating in-house, custom-made, surface mount circuit boards, using a screen and squeegee for the solder paste, and a vacuum-powered, hand-operated x/y pick-and-place table to place the parts, and a computer-controlled, conveyor-driven convection oven to solder them. That was more fun than hand-building the connector cables.

Love the marketing claiming mosfets are like tubes but then using an op-amp. AIUI it's somewhat true that fets can be like tubes but only if you use them in similar circuit topologies. An op-amp is basically designed to as much as possible eliminate the non-linearities of the transistors it's made from by using huge amounts of negative feedback.

Not a re-purposed board. The LED's are used as clipping LED's given they have a different break up characteristic than say a 1n4148. Edit: Just a few thoughts on the whole "Handmade in the USA" thing, and since I work as a electronic and software engineer and spend a lot of time getting PCB's made, I hope I qualify to give my insight: Given they are surface mount components, using a pick and place machine is going to be far more reliable than say, someone hand soldering anything surface mount. As for the board design, it's deadly simple these days to get a board routed based on the schematic and get it printed for prototyping. Christ, I can chuck a schematic into Eagle (PCB design app) and have it autoroute, make some small changes and have something ready to be printed within an hour, and I'm an amateur compared to the dudes who do this day in day out! Anywhoo, my gipes are: Surface mount resistors and caps at the price Steel Panther are charging is a bit rough... so is not socketing that CA3240 IC, jesus! Woulda cost them a few extra cents! Also having a full size Pot alongside the (12mm?) pot is weird, unless they had 2 (or more) board revisions that allow different sized pots based on what stock they could get (which wouldn't surprise me either) Either way, thanks dude! Wish I could shred half as good as you! Peath!

Yeah, they clearly spun this board for the product, as the silk screen says "MELTER" and the date is 39-18 (end of September). However, that doesn't mean the entire schematic was new, or even the PCB layout. These days you can design this board in under a day, send files to China, and get back boards within a week -- cheap even for quantities in the 10's.

That company may make most of them, but not all of them - there are dozens of companies making speakers here now. I'll be using old Jensens until the well runs dry, especially organ pulls, because they are broken in. C12N's are the shit in most guitar amps. Ted Weber always said to get my old Jensen speakers re-coned, instead of buying his copies, even though he made more money selling speakers rather than re-coning. That said, my Weber 12F150 and 10F150 , are two of my favorite speakers. My collection of old Gibson and Ampeg amps use mostly Jensen and Weber speakers, although Celstion speakers work well too, and generally don't require breaking-in like Weber speakers do. It took a long time before my Weber 12F150 and 10F150 speakers sounded their best, but now - they are the SHIT.!!!!

I believe the SMD LEDS are clipping diodes. Check out the files I sent you from our friend Brian ;-) A lot of pedals use LEDS for clipping diodes. Update : I guess a lot noticed it before me LOL

It's not a bad pedal. Not my style and no way I'd buy it with that name but I love that they made it. Now, if they called it the Speedo Melter then I'd totally buy it. 😜 Congrats Steve!

Methinks he/she? answered that with his "Speedo Melter" comment. Pedal's shouldn't be sexist, or sexual orientation oriented. For people like "Kristen" (male, female. trans???) they should make " genital melter" pedals, and let them use their "wild and crazy" dirty minds!

LED's are used for biasing and clipping in some circuits. Much smoother than other diode types, and it sounds like they did use them for that purpose.

just a hunch but the circuit looks like it may be a variation on the Ibanez Mostortion (MT-10). It's a decent sounding distortion pedal and uses the same op amp. The SMD LED's you saw on the board are likely part of the clipping stage of the circuit.

He just seems like a dude I'd like to know, even if he wasn't sure about the reason for LEDs in the circuit. I'm self-taught too, and didn't even know a pussy could be melted by electric instruments - Brad helped me understand that life-changing knowledge........

My point, for what it's worth, is that in the UK, 'Pussy' was originally a slang label for cats, so a melting cat would seem just as pertinent as the more recent meaning of 'Pussy'. Therefore, keep the entire pedal and name, but change the graphic to a cat in a deckchair under a blazing sun. Yes, and get the Aussie who drew the Serena Williams cartoon to do the logo.
