I truly believe that now is the best time in history for entry level synthesis. Especially at the price point and variety. I bought a Roland SH-101 for 50GBP back in the day and sure it was a bargain. But only had CV & Gate in a newly evolving MIDI world. Now look at what you can get these days. Endless opportunities.
@fakshen1973 Жыл бұрын
So... back in the day... everything or "ev-re-fin" synthesizer was all through-hole construction all hand soldered and wired. With the advent of modern surface mounted electronics, the cost of production and R&D has come down substantially. So we're in a renaissance of analog synthesis. Despite living in a digital world, the human side of interfacing with digital gear still has a strong analog side to it. Your cell phone has lots of analog parts in it. Your computer still consists of tons of analog parts. So what's old is new again at price point that allows smaller vendors to compete and larger vendors to expand product lines.

thanks for the great review! just got into it (first analog) and can't understand the difference between the VCA output and phones (which you are using), is it simply mono vs stereo? (same misunderstanding of the EXT audio input and how to use it... i apologize for the noob questions;)
@StarskyCarr11 ай бұрын
Cheers. The vCA and headphones are the same (different levels perhaps) but it means you can route the VCA back into the external input for some gnarly stuff and still have the phones output for the ‘final’ output. It’s a trick people used to do in the Minimoog for more raucous feedback saturation.The ext input works in eurorack levels which are very high - so just plugging an instrument in or whatever won’t have enough power to be heard. You need to preamp a ‘normal’ signal - the 2600 has a preamp circuit specifically to do this. Don’t works with other eurorack kit and with the edge and another crave etc.

But I'm probably going to do get one anyway, besides that I can tell my thoughts because it's MY opinion. And it's prolly worth some more cause I own a Dfam and know the sound of that badboy. It's just like the crave doesn't sound like the mother, nor the ms sounds like the sh and there's no problem with that, pretty little Synths on their own.

@@klaun Faf off mate. I've got me a Moog (Moo-g to place myself in the appropriate generation) Grandmother, and I've got me a Behringer Crave. Do you want to know which synth SOUNDS better? Do you want to know which synth/seq is easier to program, and just generally use? Do you want to know which synth just gives it up, gives me that QUALITY sound, and does it the EASIEST? It's the Moo-g, mate. Hands down, no question, no chance for the Behringer. I know they're not 1:1 like the Crave and the Edge, but I'm speaking from just a kit comparison. I like the Crave. I probably spend more time with the Crave because it is harder to get usable sounds out of it, and it's sequencer interface is garbo. You know the phenomenon where you spend more time on the things you hate, that are difficult, than the things that you like and are easy? I'm that kind of stubborn bass tard. And in this video, you could hear how the Moo-g just sounded good, at all settings, like it was more contrasty, richer, smoother, everything that makes a good sound good, the Moog was just there already. Moogs are TUNED in their Design. The Behringer gear is not tuned, it plays and sounds like just engineers put it together. You have to work harder to get the good sounds out of it. I've gotten some good sounds out of the Crave, but it was sweat that did it. And everytime I come back to it, it confounds me. Unlike the Grandmother, which is like a propa whoear, spreads them every time. I apologize for that metaphor. But you can hear it in this video, Klaun is right, the Moo-g did sound better in every instance. And yes, calmitay, I saw Starsky's other vid, comparing the sounds on the Moog vs. the Edge, and you can tweak and get very close. Not the point. The moog is always right there. In fact, the problem with the Moog is you can hit analysis paralysis, where this sounds good, and that sounds good, which is best, and then you can't tell, it all sounds good. The Behri gear, you don't have that problem, if you can get it to really make a good sound, a sound that is balanced, full, no fat, right there, you jump on it because it is rare, and it took a journey. Anyway, that is my experience with this gear. I'll snag an Edge before my nation's people are practically engaged in WWX if I can afford it, with the destabilizing thollar, and supply chain interruptions. Just wait until Taiwan goes hot, how many Edges do you think Behringer is going to be shipping? Bang Zoom, straight to the Moogn, it's over. All the best, Mate, we are blessed to have any of these devices! We're just more blessed to have the Moogs, and I hate status, hierarchy, especially purchased hierarchy, though I do endorse the MERITOCRACY. Really, I'm the most budge MF'er out here in EM production and have been for many decades. But, just give it up, the Moog IS better, sounds better, plays better. The only question, really, is it worth it for you. I bought the Grandmother at a low price, with four years of $19 monthly credit payments, no joke. I think I should be coming to an end of them like right now, maybe in November. I'm broke azz. But that Moog is a stunning piece in my collection of dull rocks. Seriously. Just playing lines on it, on the keyboard, I play better on the Moog vs my cheap and gen 1 Akai mpk49, which plays okay, it is serviceable, I've used it for 14 years... but I don't play as well on it. Seriously. I'm more creative on the Moog. I come up with better lines, and I play them better. It's not vooodoo or hoodoo, or some mental thing, the keys are just better, buttery, my mind maps to them better, effortlessly, I just get into the music, I feel it, it is pleasurable. Maybe that is it all, right there. Using the Crave is like a cheap old American car, where everything is there, a steering wheel, some pedals, four tires and an engine. But the Crave is like an American Sh!te Box, while the Moog is like a Honda from the mid 90s, like everything feels good, works well, you can literally drive the car better. The Crave is not pleasurable to use. And I'm not some fiending producer, pumping out gallons of garbo tracks just to afford my meth use. I was a pro sound designer, and speed, efficiency and sound quality were primary, which suggests the Moog, btw. But now, I'm an arty farty artist making the music I want to make, and I enjoy the pleasure of the process. Like it should be pleasurable, the art making process, it in of itself should be the reward, and with the Moog it is. With the Crave, it is like the DMV. It works, but it sucks. It's all rough edges (no pun), and as cheap as possible. I know that is what may allow me to purchase it. I'm okay with that because of my position in life. BUT, I'm not going to pretend like the Edge is better than any Moog product, because it is not. It is a Sh!te Box. I accept that. I'll use it, and make music with it. I'll do it in an ensemble with all three, the Moog Grandmother, the Behri Crave and Edge. It will be what it is, and really, it'll be my ability and inspiration (which heavily favors a Moog purchase, btw) that will determine the quality of my work. Anyways, that's my feelings and thinkings on the matter (no pun), based upon my experience. And damn, I can't stop, but Moogs were expensive before, like when I bought the Grandmother, it was expensive, it was a serious 4 year credit deal. BUT since then, prices have gone up considerably. CONSIDERABLY. And I'm not down with that. The Dfam is now like what I paid for the Grandmother, which is BS. Forget all these price increases. No body is getting pay raises that even come close to matching the thollar inflation (or deflation depending on your point of view). So everything is just getting more and more expensive, and less and less affordable, and Moog is leading that charge. And forget it. The Grandmother will be my last Moog, unless we nuke russia in a day and appropriate their natural gas and oil reserves, and the Beast System triumphs for a minute and someone as poor as me can actually afford beef and Moog again. But I really don't see that happening. Good thing my Akai AX-60 can withstand a direct nuclear strike and then be used as a bludgeoning device while still playing the most pathos drenched wobbly out of tune sentimental chords in the history of synthesis. Cheers for good this time..

Pretty sure he said there was a video coming, but he also said in the video that it's pretty much the same. Different filter and it being the curtis chip instead of the moog, but... that is probably only going to affect the color of the sound. This seems to get you 90% there for like 1/3rd the price. (plus it has midi, and that was a huge oversight from moog.)

Yeah… vs coming Sunday. And you’ve pretty much summed it up. Some cool demos in there with them together.

My finger is on the button! Nice video sir. Will be looking out for this come November - unless I snag a DFAM in the mean time 😅

Wasnt really interested until I watched this... dang! Can you please show off the scale when clocked externally? Like, If the RD-9 is clocking it to 1/4 can you quickly switch the scale to 1/16 etc to get thrills? Cheers for this!

Do you think it has more flexibility than the dfam? Cause I sold my Dfam. And my mother 32.

I’ll upload my DFAM comparison on Sunday hopefully. It essentially the same but with a couple of extras - pink noise and midi.

@@StarskyCarr And don't forget the clock scale. Multiply, division and triplets!! Great!

As a broke person, I simply can't justify the purchase of a DFAM. It's far too niche for the cost, despite its capabilities. The Edge on the other hand is far more accessible. It will never replace my primary drum machines, but it's such a great compliment to my other semi-modular equipment. If Behringer ever replicates the Subharmonicon, my morality will be truly tested. Great video!

LOL! Your Ebenezer Goode cockney accent is way better than my Merseyside one, Starsk. Technical question: are the Edge pitch knobs stepped in semitone intervals or continuously variable? If it's the first one it'd make it easier and less idiotproof for me to create melodic sequences (not that it matters too much as that's not what the Edge is about really)
@StarskyCarr Жыл бұрын
Thanks… Continuously variable I’m afraid.

@@StarskyCarr Guess that's what the Crave is for then. Edge still sounds amazing to me though. Aciiieeeed!!

Is there any resource showcasing the scale knob on the Edge?

I don't know. I feel like between my Neutron and B2600, I have my semi-modular analog noise needs satisfied. The sequencer might be fun though. I just don't know.
@acdnrg Жыл бұрын
As someone who got the analog sequencer area covered, which modules would you recommend for building the voice part of an edge? Just any two VCO and a noise source? For VCF, I got 1047 already. ENVs I go with FCUK for snappiness. I just wonder if the Edge circuit has parameter ranges optimized for it´s purpose, so maybe some modules are better suited than others. Heck, if only the edge would come in Euro format :D

If you are looking to reconstruct the DFAM using Eurorack, this VCV reconstruction might point the way to the modules needed. On top of that it gives a pretty good insight into how the DFAM actually functions. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnjMqYZtZbmbh68

Did you have two patterns programmed into the Crave to trigger with the Edge?
