@@riseandrun5837 I tried to recreate an image like that, which I got working, but I kept struggling with latency in the end. I used OBS for the video, Voicemeeter for the sound, and indeed the Melda vsts for the oscillosope, but there are other (free) oscilloscopes and some come with the DAW. You do of course also need a camera with a decent stand.

@@PlateletRichGel Watch a basic intro to modular synthesis (I have one on my channel called "Beginner's Mind Episode 0" and Loopop may have some) and it will explain what patching is. It allows you to re-route the modular. For example, you can send the LFO to other destinations or take inputs from other synths or modules to bring them into the Crave for modulation or additional sounds.
@daveb4628
@daveb4628 4 жыл бұрын
Scott Johnson the patch bay is really no different to say, the switches on this synth that decide for example whether the LFO effects the filter or the pitch.. a patch bay just means that instead of being limited by the switches/modulation options included by the manufacturer on the main panel, the user is able to route any output to any input, e.g the LFO to the filter resonance, or to the envelope length

I route other synths though a Microbrute, with the same MIDI going to both. It works well! This looks like it can do the same thing, except it doesn't have the headphone-to-line-in thing built in as a knob, so it might be necessary to choose between external audio or the "brute" effect.

@@iqnill Yes you have a point here. But for People with small Budgets this is a Nobrainer. I have a Mother 32 and love it. But I also have some Synth from Behringer Like Neutron, Model D (sadly the OSC is not very stable) and DM 12 and they are amazing. Moogs are much too pricy for my Budget. @iqnill
@iqnill 5 жыл бұрын
@@roland4507 I have absolutely no issue with democratising synths and allowing people with lower budgets get into a great hobby of music making. I actually, until recently, thought that Behringer moving in was OK, by now however I find it disgusting that they simply steal other's ideas with no shame and slap their logo on it. Their lower prices come from the fact that they don't spend anything on RnD (which in BVehringer's case stands for Ripoff and Duplication). So, my comment has nothing to do with being an elitist snob, just with the Behirnger's lack of any morals, it would seem.
@SyntheticFuture
@SyntheticFuture 5 жыл бұрын
@@iqnill well let's not forget that a lot of companies like Roland and Moog simply don't want to listen to the market and make what the people want. Probably because they are scared of devaluing their discontinued models. Roland could have just as easily re-released the 808 and the SH101, but they didn't. Why is beyond me but I can't blame behringer for grabbing some easy market share. Maybe it will open the eyes of the top dogs and makes them rethink their strategy (one can hope right..).
@iqnill
@iqnill 5 жыл бұрын
ThaTyger Putting Roland and Moog in the same basket is beyond me. Roland have become masters of half-baked abandonware trying to capitalise on their yesteryear classics. They could not re release the 808 as the faulty components they used for the originals don’t exist anymore. In blind tests people can’t tell the difference between their 808 and SH101 virtual analog hardware, so they are re-releasing the classics. My issue (which is being ignored or derailed in the comments) with Behringer is one - ripoff and duplication. Maybe it’s just me, but I would burn of shame copping others and calling it my own. Of course the prices are going to be low if you don’t have to develop anything, no surprises there. It was very refreshing to see them build something on their own, but now they are back to their old tricks - copy and rebrand. Does that democratise access to technology - yes. Is it a good thing - yes. But at the end of the days it’s like profiteering from the sale of stolen goods... So if one wants a cheap car radio, it’s available in the back alley.

@@goji7273 , what worries me is that just a little bit further into the future music is created simply by the power of thought. Life has effectively become Beat Saber.

BluffMunkey I have mixed opinions. I do think that the discipline of learning music conventionally WILL make you a better musician, but I also believe in the free distribution of the arts to be made by anyone. I think Brian Eno once said something along the lines of “MIDI is great because the limit is not your physical skill, but your mind”, which makes enough sense to me. I think even if everyone is creating music and it’s mostly garbage, there will still be quality work floating to the top - if you ever REALLY dig through SoundCloud or Bandcamp, you’ll be amazed by just how many amateur musicians use them, and yet what you listen to and what receives the highest acclaim is the true quality work.

Thank you fro the in depth review, always THE benchmark for me. If I can chip in my 2cts about the sequencer: this is the most obscure sequencer operation approach that I have ever seen (and with 30 years experience with midi and gear I have seen a damn lot!). First the manual is weirdly organised, for instance the DELETE PATTERN is described in the CREATING A PATTERN section, then it does not state that you must clear the pattern page by page (at least with my unit). In addition I think the led system is inconsistent, so it is very hard to know what is going on, and what mode is actually active (STEP, STEP EDIT, PLAY, KEYBOARD or whatever). After 3 hours just on the sequencer, I still feel like my unit is faulty (probably not) and I still haven't been able to seamlessly programme something useful into it. On the other hand, the sound and the general approach of the Crave for sound design are really good, and for the list price it is a great analog unit with modular capabilities - that's why I bought it: as an introduction to analog and modular (for me), and it really does the job. But for my peace of mind i now sequence it with my MPC, i've abandoned all hopes with the onboard sequencer.

If this is $200 or less then this is really crazy value. Basically they created a Moog Mother32 for 1/3 the price. Pretty crazy. Sounds decent too. Even just a single oscillator module like the Dixie ii+ would cost more than this whole thing. Yes, the Dixie does sound better and has more waveforms, but still, this is a great gateway drug to modular.

Yo Loo...not sure who is sponsoring your site, but the advertisement for a special bra that opened your vid definitely had me scratching my head. No pun intended. Apart from that, it's almost cliché to say "great job" when you do a video, but I'll say it anyway: great job on this! As always, very good balance of specific information with personal observation and demonstration. As for the Crave, it does have some appeal, no doubt.

To my ears, the M32 filter, if it's better at all, certainly doesn't sound $400 better. Would be nice to side-by-side compare them though. The tone of the VCO is the biggest difference I can hear.

@@mattsynth There kind of is something like it, you can clone the circuit and it doesn't matter if it was made by a company named Moog. My understanding is that this filter is the same one used in the Behringer Model D, so in fact it IS a Moog ladder filter. Also, I was asking what particular aspect of the filter you like better on the M32, some tired old line about the Moog filter doesn't really mean anything to me. Also, you think it's called a "latter filter" so what do you know anyway?

For the price and number of features, it's pretty solid. If you want your first semi-modular synth to expand on.. this isn't a bad idea. The price-point is also great for someone looking to satisfy their G.A.S. with something new to throw at it.
