I thoroughly enjoyed this. Thank you for posting. I received my Model D yesterday and started exploring its sounds. For those of us who are new to synthesis patching, an explanation of the inputs /outputs along the top of the unit, and the knobs/switches pertinent to them, would be a great boon.

Hey James. I have a video that's just gone live today going in depth with etc oscillator bank. I'll then have one on the mixer section, filter, envelopes, modulation. A whole series to come that I hope is helpful for you.

this thing is a beast, Behringer has really made quite a comeback. When I was a kid, they were the brand to avoid, but ever since they teamed up with Midas and Klark Teknik they've been KILLING IT. So glad I got this synth

For any of you who wish to utilize Velocity with your Model D, pick up the CME U6MIDI PRO. It allows you to map note on - velocity to CC01, which is Modulation. Likewise if your controller has aftertouch. I’m utilizing both. Can’t do them simultaneously of course, as the Boog modulation only does one thing at a time. So I have two profiles on the CME. One mapping velocity to CC01, and the other mapping aftertouch. I use velocity to open the filter, and I use aftertouch to add vibrato. Makes this thing much more expressive.
@DivKid

Velocity to filter is a nice thing, good tip for making that work over MIDI with it.

I did lust after the RME voyager rack, but it was always out of my reach, now is hard to find too, takes up a fair space & if you want to connect it to your modular it means buying a couple of add on boxes, costing even more money & real estate. So this thing is IMO just as gorgeous, now available for about a 10th of the former's price is, small & can be slotted into your modular & has a selection of sockets for that. So its a dream come true. My ambition is to get one & eventually expand it with a few AJH modules for the extra features. I know some may laugh at me cos that's probably like me buying a Koenigsegg carbon fibre steering wheel for my Clio but still!

I'd like to see some more information about the things that this one has that the oriignal Moog hadn't. Like the (second?) LFO, the "Osc3/Filter EG" switch, "NoiseLFO", etc. And what you can use the in/outputs like the "1 V/Oct." for. I don' get that.

I just watched your video on the AJH Synth MiniMod system for FutureMusic. Is it just me or does the MiniMod has a better bottom end and filter sound? Nice video. Clear and concise. Question: Can the oscillators be synced like with the Moog Prodigy?
@DivKid
@DivKid 7 жыл бұрын
There's no sync on the oscillators as per the original. That would have been a nice added feature. However Behringer did just announce the Neutron that's a dual 3340 oscillator with sync. I've been testing that and they sound good.

what's the build quality like? I used to have a behringer mixer and the build left a lot to be desired. clone, copy, whatever, it sounds great and that's really all that matters. for the price it seems like a no brainer to me and I'm very interested in picking one up (depending on how well it's built) cheers for the demos

Sounds really good to me, and it looks pretty versatile. I've been reading many behringer hater comments since the D was was announced (mainly in Spanish synth fb groups) and honestly don't understand whats wrong about making such piece of gear and making it so affordable, and again, in terms of sound: is there any downside to point in the model-D?

+Heathcliff - I've thought about this but I'm not sure how well it would work unless each of the parameters corresponds to a midi cc. In other words, if you adjust the envelopes it needs to send the cc that corresponds to the F-Attck, F-Dcy, F-Sus, or you have to set each one manually on however many of these you have. This goes for every other parameter. The question is, do they send and receive cc, not just MIDI notes?

@DivKid
@DivKid 7 жыл бұрын
no it's completely analogue, no recall, no MIDI control, no memory. You have to have a frantic "reset" of the knobs between patches live. But there's not that much to tweak so it's doable.

I own a Voyager (and a lot of other synths and moogs) and all i hear on this new synth in all demos is a weired annoying metallic sound. Not always but 80/100 of the time. Like a moog sound is blended with this metallic cheap tone and it makes me angry. The other 20/100 yes it sound like a moog but for a few seconds . For a 300$ synth is not bad (filter is also good) but i would choose a lot of others in the same price range with less features but better sound. Most synths i bought under of 1000$ was a waste of money and sold them all, its better to have one 1500$ synth than 10 toys around. Before someone say "its only 300!" i would say this: I would more be afraid to throw 300$ on garbage than to buy a 3000$ superb lifetimes synth . I still have to hear it in a good studio but i dont think it will change my mind.
@spankenheim
@spankenheim 7 жыл бұрын
I also have a lot of other synths and Moogs (seven Moogs actually) . I bought a Behringer Model D on pre-order because it will serve a purpose in my studio. When I get it I'll give it a listen and if it does what I want it to do and it sounds the way I want it to sound then I'll be a happy person. If it doesn't, I won't. But I won't know that until it shows up.
@DivKid
@DivKid 7 жыл бұрын
I think until you have it in your own place in an environment you know well you'll struggle to really nail down the sound. It's tough. I agree with you generally Konstantinos, better to have things that serve you well then several things that don't. But I do think this will serve a lot of people well.

What AD (audio interface) did you use for this video? Couldn't really hear (or feel) the low end.
@DivKid
@DivKid 7 жыл бұрын
I can assure it's nothing to do with the AD / Audio Interface. Watch some of my others videos and see what the perceived general weight is from other devices and go from there. But there's no processing and issues with the interface. With resonant higher up there's no compensation for the low end loss. Which might be part of what you're hearing here.
@taavitaavi
@taavitaavi 7 жыл бұрын
All your videos have that specific sound to it. I'm just wondering what gear you use for conversion as I know there's a huge difference in quality - especially in the lower end depending on the AD used. Have tested quite many and if I knew which was used, then making my own conclusions based on it would be worth a lot as for instance when I'd like to aqcuire that Model D then I would have to order it, they don't sell it where I live.

New subscriber here. Very good review of the Behringer D. Having owned a Mini Moog D back in the day, it does a pretty good job of emulating the old Moog sounds. As for Eurorack, this is like 84U (a.k.a. 19" rack width)?
@DivKid
@DivKid 7 жыл бұрын
When measuring rack space "U" is rack units which is a measurement of height for rack gear like a 1U lexicon FX unit or 2U rack compressor. 84HP is horizontal pitch with is the measure of width. A standard 19" rack will fit 84HP in it. However modular cases can vary in width and but each euro rack row is always 3U high. So a 6U case would have two rows. The width of this is around 70HP (I'd have to check) so you could fit this and a couple of smaller modules into a standard case no problem. Hope that helps and thanks for subscribing.

Not that modern Moog like the 'phatty' or 'sub' ranges are based on the exact same circuits but I'd like to hear them A/B compared.
@Bantam80
@Bantam80 7 жыл бұрын
DivKidVideo I'd definitely like to hear one in person. KZbin compression isn't always the best for making an accurate comparison but at that price I feel like I'll be making room for it. Copying the original circuitry does seem to give it a more vintage sound than modern Moog synths.
@DivKid

Modern Moogs definitely aren't the old circuits but they're also lovely instruments in my experience. Different colours and tones to pull on like different era guitars.

It sounds great Ben! (Although you sound a bit croaky) ;-( How does the size of the knobs compare to other eurorack gear? They seem fiddly, but maybe that's just because I'm subconsciously comparing them to the minimoog.
@DivKid
@DivKid 7 жыл бұрын
I am a bit croaky, man flu, tried to swing some days off but my moaning and joking didn't go down well haha. I think that's just subconsciously comparing to a Moog. They're as spaced out or a fair bit more than euro modules generally. It looks/feels spacious in the rack.

@@DivKid Thanks for coming back to me! I mean how does the unit generate the CVs for the VCA? Are they software generated as in most modern analog synthesizers or are they generated by dedicated (Curtis SSM) chips or even (as in the real Mini) by circuits with discrete components?
@DivKid
@DivKid Жыл бұрын
I couldn't tell you, though I did read through the manual which mentions nothing. Are you asking as you're specifically looking for that Moog analog "snap"? Or something else?
@LESINDES

@@DivKid Yes, I could not find anything written about this aspect. And yes, the MINI seems to be more definitite and precise I found out in my comparison: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6Xahpajdpp8qpY And if it was all software Behringer could take of the rediculously short actuator travel you have to control the attack phase which is really insufficient for targeted sound shaping at least at this point. They mounted the wrong pots.

There's extended version of the sounds used here going online daily at the minute and more in depth videos with explanations are to come. Model D or SE-02??...
@DivKid
@DivKid 7 жыл бұрын
I don't have an SE-02 here to compare.
@Paul-ur5kc
@Paul-ur5kc 7 жыл бұрын
I owned an original Mini Moog model D, bought new in 1977. Long story short The B-D is more Moog sounding than the SE-02's I've heard on the internet. The B-D has REALLY had me going a few times and I've had one pre-ordered since last August. At this price I'll prolly end up with several poly chained. The SE-02 is very cool in it's own right but doesn't duplicate the original model D's sound as well. I've no hands on experience with the B-D but the VCO pots seem to function much like the original from what I've seen and that will be important to me, IOW, I need to detune VCO 2 just a tad sharp to VCO 1(I can't really duplicate what I'm going for with my Moog Sub37TE, close but not quite, the filter function doesn't quite get it either). I had a very specific sound that I've never been able to duplicate since my MM-D gave up the ghost. My Mini Moog Voyager did well and definitely sounded like a Moog but it wasn't a Model D. Those old Model D's were very special and more than just with the tone and fatness. I had the mod wheel pot die and absolutely could not find a suitable replacement even with the exact same stated value and Moog had gone out of business so when you needed a part it was impossible to find the exact proper one. That was my experience anyways. It's difficult to compare on youtube for obvious reasons but I saw one comparison between the B-D and the SE-02 and solely judging from that on sound, the B-D wins. I think people that are so excited about the B-D, as am I, are buying them hoping that they'll basically be a viable alternative to a Mini Moog model D which means that is absolutely ALL I/they want it to be because the originals were exactly what they should have been. That said, I never used mine with out an Echoplex as it was something that, IMHO, the MM-D needed. Those two together were amazing. I've a Moog Mini Fooger delay on my S37TE that works well and will use it but it's not an Echoplex. ;-) And as a Mini Moog model D was more than just tone and fatness the Echoplex was far far more than just echo. My .02.

my guts said it's good. I'm totally avoiding all politics around it. That's never held my interest in terms of this channel so I'll be presenting it for what it is, how it sounds, what the features are and some patch examples and modulation from other sources etc. I think for the price it's a winner. What do you think just with these quick patch jams?
@araguet

I think that sounds pretty nice and very "Moogy". The interaction with eurorack, the MIDI implementation and the extra LFO make the thing so juicy. Maybe its KZbin, but this does not sound like a real Moog Model D. It's missing the girth and low end punch of the real deal. It does, however, sound better than the Sub and Subsequent 37! Still great for $220 (Musician Friend's discounts rule)
