Just discovered a problem using these. Plugging in a guitar cable created mass noise. As an electrical engineer I investigated the cause. The input 1/4 inch jacks are TRS and accept truly balanced inputs. The problem is that MANY guitar cable sleeves do not adequately short the ring to the sleeve in these TRS inputs and this causes noise as cable is moved or vibrated. Since I use mine strictly for on stage guitars and devices with mono cables, this noise is a major problem. I have solved it simply by opening the units and bridging the ring-sleeve connections with two tiny jumpers soldered on the backside of the little interconnector between the two internal boards. One only has to take the cover off... six screws and the two nuts of the jacks to access this. With the XLR connectors at the top, bridge the third row down between the two pins and then between the second row down left and the first row top right. This ties the ring to the sleeve and avoids noise when using mono guitar cables. Those using gold plated cables might never see the problem but not all the world uses gold plated guitar cables.

i'm using a mono guitar cable. i have to bridge the XLR output too? Just bridging the 1/4 input don't solve the problem? And doing what you did, preserve all the benefits of noise isolation of a XLR connection? Sorry, newbie questions. thank you

Hi. I'm thinking of buying this equipment for live performances. It would be to connect a bass and your pedals to the table through the direct box. Will the sound be quality? Would you indicate the purchase?

It's basically a method employed to provide dc current to mics that have active circuitry.

2:00 You refer to instruments requiring boosting, but then you point to a switch which attenuates the input signal. Attenuation=DECREASING volume, not boosting: it's MINUS 20dB and MINUS 40dB. :/

Unfortunately these use very cheap OP amps (so I have been told) and are very noisey eg white noise through the PA system. Have tried them on other PA systems and same problem.

Yes I agree, I bought a few of these and could not figure out where the hiss was coming from through my PA. Turned out it was these cheap DI boxes. I have been told they use very cheap OP amp chips in them and if you replace these chips with better quality ones, they come up quiet. Problem is the chips are surface mounted and very fiddly to get out and replace (NOT WORTH IT). I went for the Ultra DI100 boxes. super quiet but a little more expensive.
