As usual, your ability to present complex info in a user understandable manner makes your reviews outstanding. This is despite (and not because of) your on-line "character" aka the guy who greets earthlings at the beginning of the reviews. When I first started watching your content I was put off by the character but it has always been clear to me that you're a smart guy who takes this stuff seriously. Good onya. Keep it up. Anyway I'm old, quite used to your presentation now and have done enough of my own sound work to respect the way you go about your reviews and formulate your opinions. This video may have been a bit more relevant if you had used a selection of microphones that match the budget projections of users who would look to buy the Behringer interfaces in the first place. I don't think someone who can afford an SM7B would search out either of these interfaces to run it through but it is interesting that neither of the Behringers had enough grunt for the job. I thought the Rode NT1 sounded quite sweet through the devices used here and since I'll never have a Shure SM7B, I don't have to worry about the lack of gain. I wasn't aware that you have an NT1 so I looked up the video right away. I have watched the NT1a video a few times now. As for your question, is the UMC22 worth the extra $20, based on this review, I'd say yes however if I was shopping for an interface, I would buy again what I'm currently using, the Yamaha AG03 even though it's about twice the price of the UMC22. Now regarding more "Versus" series, I've been wondering about the next few microphones up the Rode food chain, the NT1000 and the NT2a. You did something like that with the Audio Technica microphones and that was very informative. All up. Thanks Bandrew and cheers from DownUnder
@Podcastage6 жыл бұрын
Donald MacGregor thank you for the kind words Donald. I think you brought up a great point about using microphones that are more fitting with people looking into a budget interface. I would also be interested in working my way up the Rode food chain. Another great suggestion. I have my eyes on an announcement that I think is coming soon which is right up my alley (because I love me some dynamic microphones).
@donaldmacgregor25456 жыл бұрын
Cheers for that Andrew. I'm a musician not a podcaster and was not aware of the SM7B's popularity for that purpose nor had I considered the logic-line you're suggesting regarding these interfaces and their gain abilities. That's all fair enough and you've taught me something, thank you. I suppose I just assumed that someone buying a Behringer interface would also be going for a bang-for-buck microphone option so testing the interface with a Rode as Bandrew has done, or the AT2020 (or any of the Chinese mics that are found on the usual websites) is more applicable. Here in Aussie SM7Bs are never cheap no matter where they are found however a used Rode NT1 or NT1a can often be had for less than $150, and Rode is a local brand that takes care of it's customers. I think you've reminded me that there are many angles to consider when looking at reviews and as long as the user ends up with good gear at a fair price, all is well. Too often I've seen people buy something (or not) based on reviews that do not adequately assess the product in it's "natural" or intended use setting. Bandrew's reviews are unusually complete and I did wonder why the SM7B was even in the discussion. Thanks for the useful commentary. Best regards, Don

The UMC22 was my first audio interface (the Focusrite Scarlett never convinced me). I used it really a lot with lots of microphones, mainly the AKG P220 and the Rode Procaster. It never let me down. Recently I changed it for a UR22, which is definitely better built and has a lower noise level with dynamic mics, but with condensers there's no difference between the two products. The UMC22 has even a better headphones output. The one on the UR22 is way lower. I don't generally trust Behringer but with this interface they did a good job.

Excellent presentation and analysis, Bandrew. I presently have the UMC204HD, which is a marked step up from either of the units you compared. At this level you have a rudimentary way of getting your mic or instrument into your computer environment. Many people don't need or want anything more. Behringer offers the best interfaces for cost hands down. Now I'm in need of something portable yet expandable to up to 12 XLR inputs, I'm thinking about the foscusrite scarlet 18i8 which could be connected via ADAT to a behringer ADA8200. This gives many options for home recording. Keep up the great reviews!
@roberttjohnson6 жыл бұрын
I really like your reviews and always look for your reviews before purchasing. One comment stated that you should use a budget mic when reviewing budget pre-amps and I agree, I have not seen many pre-amps that can provide enough gain for your go to mic and that's not a fair comparison when using a mic which requires so much gain, no budget pre-amp will ever be able to drive that monster but if you could use a budget mic, for the large percentage of viewers that may be looking for a budget setup that would be far more beneficial and provide a more real world comparison. Thanks
@scoremoore42806 жыл бұрын
I have the um2 audio interface. Therefore I'll be the first to say, the noise floor really is annoying. However in my case if you found a quiet spot, with little noise your interface performance is pretty good. it's way better than the Irig Pre-amp, which i found to be a waste of my 40 dollars for a portable interface. So what I'm saying here is, it doesn't matter if you get an Apollo or the um2, It's truly all about what works for you, and how well you use it. It's like comparing audacity to Reaper or something. if you're a master at audacity, like I am then it doesn't matter if you did pick up Reaper, since you have more experience with audacity. if this made any sense.

I can see both sides as being good for differing reasons; UM2 more for a basic setup and smaller footprint while the UM22 is, marginally, better in terms of build. One area that I was a bit confused by is the choices in mics used, not being a troll or anything by it though. I realize those are your go to mics for testing interfaces, however in a "budget" item comparision wouldn't you want the mics to be budget as well? I mean honestly if I could afford a Shure sm7b or a Rhode NT1 I doubt highly I would be using a cheaper interface, but that is just me maybe. Again not trying to sound rude or trollish, hopefully what I said makes sense in someway (in my head it makes sense).
@eldest31716 жыл бұрын
I believe he used the NT1 because of the crazy low self noise not getting in the way of the interface noise and the 7b just to show what kind of gain you can get out if them.... I don't think bandrew expects people to run those mics on thouse interfaces
@roberttjohnson6 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with your point, I can't afford a $300+ microphone on my budget and I would not purchase such microphone for recording voice-overs. I would purchase the best budget mic for my setup and that for me is Shure SM58 and Behringer XM8500, they both sound very similar my preamp should arrive soon and I can test and review, but yes very good suggestion for a budget setup use a budget mic for the review.

I've just started watiching; I'm going to get into some voice acting work and am now researching budget home studio equipment. But this question isn't about the equipment you're reviewing; it's about your room. I've watched about 20 of your videos so far, and I'd love to know how in the world you get such a clean recording of your voice? Your room looks like it should be *very* noisy; you have your computer, lots of audio equipment, stringed instruments that aren't in cases, you move your chair around, etc...but for the most part no hiss or pop or other "bad stuff" comes thru in your videos. How do you do that? Inquiring minds want to know. :-)

Excellent comparisons. One shortcoming of the UMC22 (and I'm guessing the UM2) is that there is no separate volume knob for the monitor/headphones. So If you have the gain set low for a hot condenser mic, you will get hardly any sound in the headphones. And if you have the gain at 100% for a quiet mic like the SM7B, the headphone volume will likewise be 100 per cent -- ouch. There are good use cases for it at this price, but don't count on using the latency-free monitoring. (You might be able to adjust it in your interface, but not on the hardware without affecting the mic's gain.)

Im thinking of purchasing a better quality microphone, but here is the question: do you think the interface is good enough for a 100+ dollar microphone, or is it just a waste of money? Would i need a more expensive interface to get the worth out of the new mic?

I use a UMC22 with an AKG P120 for my Twitch channel, and I get quite a few comments saying how good my setup sounds. So for at least casual Twitch streaming, either one of these are great

They are very capable for the price. Absolutey.

How do you get such clear recordings, all of my recordings have background noise behind it and it is pretty noticeable

Have you found a solution? This is also my problem

Excellent review. Please have a question: I can't power the UM2 with a USB adapter, it only works when connected to a PC. Is it a property or a defect? I would also like to use the UM2 as a simple mixer before an active speaker.

Please tell is it better to buy interface UM22 instead of UM2

Have you already did the behringer um2 vs focusrite scarlet solo 2nd gen? The UM-22 is that bad is it?

What about using the UM2 with the Shure SM7 dB?

Hi, i'm thinking about buying an inexpensive interface but i'm worried about wasting the money in the long run and it turning out i should've just saved up for a focusrite scarlett for example. Currently my use would be simply to run my guitar >interface>amp sim or guitar>distortion pedal>cab sim. What do you think/recommend?

Perhaps you could compare some budget mixers in a future video?

I feel like I'm unaware of a lot of the budget mixers. Any ideas on what they are?

@@Podcastage I've been experimenting with a few models for a project at work. I've looked at Behringer 302, Pyle PAD20MXU, Power Dynamics PDM-D301BT (has a, very useful, Bluetooth input), Ammoon F4-USB. I'm in the UK but I believe that they are all available in the USA.

Did you notice a difference in the Preamps? I have a Behringer digital mixer with Midas preamps and I love it, but I’ve always felt let down by the Xenix or however you spell it
@Podcastage6 жыл бұрын
In these tests, there wasn't much of a difference. I did notice a very very slight improvement in the clarity on the Midas pres, but nothing terribly noticeable especially if it's going to get uploaded to youtube.

Another solid vid, Bandrew! I kinda feel if you are going to go this cheap, go all the way with the UM2. It's worth 30 bucks. The UMC22 seems worth 35. They both kind of made me sad inside.

GET THE 202 ! its worth it. you'll want to use it. it looks nice and it sounds great. you want to touch it, its that attractive. i got my 202 for 57 pounds on eBay. i sold it to get the behringer usb mixer interface and regret it as the mixer is noise as hell
