This is a new series I am starting, Audio 101. This will train your starting sound techs on the basics of using the Behringer X32. Using these videos will give a good solid root to a new sound tech using this board and is a great kick start to then go onto my other more advanced videos.
This video specifically goes over the preamp section of the X32. I will also explain how to set a correct channel gain for unity gain. Additionally touched on this video is Phantom Power, Polarity Reverse and the Low Cut.

Guys, think of Phase and Polarity like comparing jazuzzi's and hot tubs. Not all hot tubs are jacuzzi's, however, all jacuzzi's are hot tubs. In the same way, not all phase is 180 polarity, but polarity is always 180 phase. So yeah, after some thought, I believe Behringer mislabeled it too But in the grand scheme of life, who really cares? Nobody. Nobody cares except us nerds in the comment section below a tutorial video. And that's exactly why are mixes sound badass. lol Hope this helps
@McSlobo
@McSlobo 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly the other way around. Each polarity switch is 180° phase switch. Each phase switch is not a polarity switch. Polarity switch is a special case of phase switch. So, Behringer did not use a wrong term, however they could have used a more specific term.
@caspartech3893
@caspartech3893 5 жыл бұрын
When you look at a signal on an oscilloscope, you will see the “sound wave”. When you change the polarity, the “waves” will be 180* out of phase from each other, which cancels out some of your sound. So, Behringer’s use of the term phase simply means the same as polarity. I do see your point if it were an actual effect phase. But Behringer is referring to the phase of the sound wave. Love your videos.

This is correct. The symbolism given for the snare sounds is dead on. However the same wave sounds given will cause each other to be canceled out up to the point where some of the wav isn't 100% in phase. Soooo you do infact reverse the polarity, however, you gotta take it in or in this case out of phase.

At 0:50 - "unity gain" is 0 dB, that is, same level output as comes into the input. It would be VERY unusual to set the preamp's gain trim to unity gain/0 dB. The "correct amount of gain" in this context is: whatever gain setting your source requires to get the signal to peak at your desired level. That's what the channel meter is for, to see the results of your gain adjustment and help you set it as desired. Typical ballpark setting for a mic into a mic input is somewhere around +20 to +30 dB, varies depending on the mic type and the SPLs off the source (guitar amp cab/vocalist/acoustic instrument etc.)

I just wanted to clarify to the narrator with regards to Behringer's labeling of the "phase" button. Behringer did not error when labeling the button as "phase" whereas the electrical physics when engaging this buttons shifts the signal 180 degrees out of phase to prevent signal cancellation. With respect to how the signal path is manipulated, the term polarity and phase are synonymous.

While your wave forms appear reverse phase when you use that switch, it is actually altering the positive and negative connections. Since the input signal is of varying voltage, it has an appearance of "phase", and you wouldn't be wrong to think of it that way, it is more technically correct as polarity. The result is what is important in any case, and his explanation of sound waves and drum mic-ing is a perfect explanation on the use of it, so as long as you understand that part, you should be good to go and won't run into sound wave cancellation issues.
@pentachronic

Technically it is 180 phase at any individual frequency. If you pass multiple frequencies through it, it is polarity. However it's easier to print a "phi" symbol than write "polarity" and everyone knows what it means.

Polarity and phase are really the same thing if you understand it. Being in phase would be +/- are all the same in inputs, and being out of phase means it's -/+ on some inputs so you need to flip the polarity to put them back into phase. So no Behringer is technically not wrong.
@NiceOwl84
@NiceOwl84 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds are waves, they are all time dependent. If there was no time there would be no sound. It's all frequency/periods/time-dependent 100%. This is also why it's a circle for the symbol with a line, it represents sin/sine waves in their circular motion based on time and why it's not the +/- symbol.

That's actually not true, and probably a US thing, but over here in Europe we call it a phase switch if the polarity of an audio channel is turned around. This is actually even what they call it with XLR cables too, and it does switch a phase entirely. Behringer is a German brand, so over there they are correct. Phase and out of phase is not time-dependent where I live. When a signal is 100% out of phase it's indeed entirely its polar opposite. Also visually easy to spot when zoomed in on a wave-form.

So if I have 3 lav mics and wanted to deal with feedback issues would this be the correct way to go about it. First, Have my master fader at unity, get the correct input gain on LAV 1, then raise LAV 1 channel fader until the point of feedback and deal with feedback accordingly until I get that channel fader to unity. Secondly, once LAV 1 is set, you keep it hot and at unity and repeat this process with LAV 2 & 3. Is this process correct?

Drew, summation is another reason we do not want to go too hot on incoming signals. All those channels sum up to greater than their input. I've encountered this before when looking at the input signal on the mains and saw that they were clipping, but my output signal was no where near clipping levels. You can get away with a few hotter channels (as I think the Behringer pre-amps sound warmer with a bit hotter input signal), but if you are running 10+ channels you can clip if running channels hotter than -12 input signal. Granted, -12 is the peak, so not every channel is going to be at -12 at the same time, but it's worth keeping that in mind when setting up gain structure during sound checks.

Dont disagree with this at all. But i see a ton of people saying we should be running X32 levels at -18 and its because they heard somewhere analog levels = -18. Its not because they understand what theyre saying. The meters on X32 are peak meters and -18 for peaks is leaving a ton of headroom on the table. Of course the noise floor is VERY low, but still, ive been running X32 and M32 for almost a decade and never had an issue with my 2bus clipping due to summation. I shoot for peaks at -8 to -10. No biggy. I just wish people would stay saying stuff that isnt necessarily true, when they really dont understand at all what theyre talking about.

If the sub crossover is around 100 hz, and low cut /high pass has a curve to it ( not like a shelf) would you want the low cut up around 150 hz? Also , we have issues with a lot of low end mud in our untreated room so I run low cut on everything except bass and kick at 150hz. Including keys...especially keys because in many cases keys players shouldn't even use their left hand, or at least should shift both hands up an octave to stay out of the bass/kick realm. Piano/keys players often learn as the only instrument in the room and tend to dominate way too much of the frequency spectrum. I've seen Paul Baloche worship band videos emphasize this point.

Can you address the analog to digital conversion at the preamp ( and possible loss of bit depth if set too low there) as shown at 24:10 in this video ? He also mentions the desire to have "high resolution" by keeping channel faders near unity and how sub groups help you with final volume in the house, but it isn't clear what you'd do if keeping preamp gain at "line level" forces the channel fader into undesirable territory. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZmleZacrq5om5o

Multi-channel recording is a completely different topic, so I doubt he will cover it. You'd need to record the kit on something that can record all the channels at once in order to mix them after. So at the very least you'd need an interface that can send all the channels to your computer. Look at the Focusrite Scarlett interfaces for example.

You can call polarity switch also 180° phase shift.
@postaldudemcdude6192
@postaldudemcdude6192 10 жыл бұрын
Actually, it is correctly called Phase reverse (or more properly Invert) because you are rotating the phase of the AC waveform by 180° (or inverting it). Two identical waveforms 180° out of rotation will cancel each other. You really need to read up on Alternating current. Polarity refers to the flow of electrons which is constantly changing in an AC circuit, which doesn't really have poles like Direct Current does.
@DrewBrashler
@DrewBrashler 10 жыл бұрын
They are very easily confused. Phase is a time relevant term and is a measurement of time and frequency. When changing the Phase of a signal you are changing the signal in the time domain. The "Phase Reverse" or "Polarity Reverse" switch is flipping the wave form but not changing the time location of the signal. This is called the polarity of a signal. It is the same as if you had two XLR cables on two mics, and one was wired backwards. If you change the distance of one of the mics you are changing the phase relevant to the other microphone, but it will still be out of polarity (180°), but the only way to get it back into true alignment is to flip the polarity of the signal (AKA the + and - of the xlr cable). If you were to mic a snare on the top and bottom, same distance from the drum head. When you hit the snare drum, the top mic would receive a negative pressure called rarefaction (this is the negative swing of the wave form). The bottom mic would receive a positive pressure called compression (this is the positive swing of a wave form). Because these two mics are receiving the same waveform, one mic is swinging negative while the other is swinging positive, they would cancel each other. Moving either microphone closer or farther away would change the time that the snare would hit the mic. This is changing the relative phase of the mics by changing the time. The only way to truly correct this is to flip the polarity of one of the microphones. Yes you can call is a Phase Invert switch, but it is more correct to call it a polarity reverse switch. Same physics happen when time aligning speakers and one is wired backwards, you would need to change the polarity of one of the speakers to correctly align them. Also the flow of electrons is what audio is, once it hits the mic cable. The Phase/Polarity reverse/invert switch in an analog console is a double pull double throw switch (DPDT) that swaps the + and - lines, so for an electronics term it is switching the polarity of the audio line. In a digital console like the X32 you are doing the same physics of swapping the + and - lines.
@DrewBrashler
@DrewBrashler 10 жыл бұрын
Another way to think of this is that a phase shift results in a time shift that affects all frequencies different, some may be 180 degrees out, some 90 degrees, and others at different degrees. A polarity shift does not result in a time shift, and affects all frequencies equally.
@LaminarSound
@LaminarSound 10 жыл бұрын
Drew Brashler Youre pretty much correct on this Drew. Thing is, problems arise due to "phase" issues, or time/distance differences between 2 different mics. So weve been calling the polarity switch the phase switch for so long because it fixes "phase" issues. Kind of a moot point and not all that important what you call it. Long as you know exactly what it does-switch polarity! lol I like to use a guitar cable to quickly make sure the overheads(if using stereo pair) are equally distanced from the center of the snare drum. This is a great starting point for eliminating phase issues particularly with the snare. Thanks for the great videos on the X32. Our church is planning on getting one in 2015 so im prepping.

Drew Brashler this is by far the best explanation on this topic. I've had a lot of problem till now. No one had really explained it properly. Every engineer had his own opinion. But when you used the example of snare top and bottom mic getting rarefaction and compression, it cleared everything. Thanks a lot. It's correct that you cannot inverse phase. It simply doesn't make sense.
@johnboehm3027

What a topic for a lively discussion! Even on the most expensive and vintage consoles, you will see that phase symbol on the polarity switch. What you don't see is the word "invert" or "flip" next to it, as it takes too much room to silk screen it there. So I wouldn't say that Behringer has the wrong symbol, but you have an interesting way of explaining the difference (or similarity) of polarity vs. phase. When we talk about loudspeaker phasing, we call it "absolute phase" when a positive pressure on a microphone diaphragm membrane causes a positive-going waveform that stays that way to the loudspeaker driver, and the result is an outward excursion of the reproducer. If you reverse the polarity somewhere along the line, we would say that the phase has been reversed. James B. Lansing had an electrical background, and for some time, the BLACK terminal on a JBL driver would be the positive (+) connection, especially if the color coding where black and white. In phase; out of phase. Positive polarity; negative polarity. Inverted polarity. Whatever you choose to call it, we all will understand the function of that switch! Thank you for these great video presentations!

"Our clip is at zero"...that would means there is no headroom above zero reference. Headroom is not the levels below reference but the peak levels above it before it clips. A well designed unit will allow 10 to 20 db above reference before actually clipping.

You're thinking 0dBu through an analogue signal path. In the digital realm 0dBFS is the absolute maximum digital audio level (Gandalf enters: "NONE SHALL PASS!!!"). An input signal that exceeds the 0dBFS limit within the digital-analogue converter (located immediately after the analogue preamp) will generally cause ugly digital distortion. -18dBFS is therefore a pretty decent reference to achieve exactly what you suggest: 10 to 20 dB of headroom.

What is phantom power? Even though this is supposed to be basic, is there somewhere else to go that is really basic? That starts with terms and what they mean?
@marcelwierda6262
@marcelwierda6262 7 жыл бұрын
Phantom power, in the context of professional audio equipment, is DC electric power transmitted through microphone cables to operate microphones that contain active electronic circuitry.[1] It is best known as a convenient power source for condenser microphones, though many active direct boxes also use it. The technique is also used in other applications where power supply and signal communication take place over the same wires. go here for more exciting details ;) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantom_power

Thanks for the tutorial. Here is the issue I am having when I attempt to set the volume fader at unity level, which I believe is 0. Regardless of the gain on a particular channel, the sound that comes out of my speaker is clipping while the speaker volume is low, and also the signal sounds weak. Imagine a sound is low, weak, and clipping at the same time. Please let me know what I am doing wrong? FYI, I set the volue of the keyboard producing the sound half way, and the main fader is also set at unity level which I think is 0

When you have a good gain structure on your channels how do you transfer this best to your front of house speakers should i have master fader at 0db and then turn up the speakers to the volume i want or do you turn the speakers right up and then use the master fader to the volume you want?
@liviuemanuelion

your master fader should stay at Unity. you have to turn up or down the speakers volume in order to fill you room/church/theatre.

Hey Drew, my acoustic guitar has an active pickup, but doesn't have a preamp. Do I need to be using the LR Baggs Para DI, or could I just be running my signal directly to the x32 (via the SD16) and use the built-in preamps instead?
@DrewBrashler
@DrewBrashler 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Joel! You could plug into 15 or 16 with your acoustic guitar as those are HI-Z inputs. The better way would be to use a DI Box, but 15&16 on the SD16 will work just fine!
@ditchboy3698
@ditchboy3698 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Drew. The dedicated Hi-Z inputs make sense as the only ones that would be able to change the impedance. But I'm still curious about the use of a fancy dedicated pre-amp like the LR Baggs Para DI vs the built in Midas preamps. Is it only about tone color? I tend to keep my Para DI eq flat, and do all my mixing from the board anyway. Am I double-preamping, or just skipping/wasting the tone control power of the Para DI? Would I notice much difference from a cheap, simple DI vs one with a built in preamp?

I personally think -12/-18 for peaks is low for a gain setting on digital boards, but as long as the rest of your signal chain is structured accordingly it should be okay. However I am for -9 or even -6 for loud peaks. That being said I would suggest evaluating your settings later down in the signal chain to see if your gain structure is allowing you to get full volume with your faders around unity.

When I set my gain just as you describe, I can't get enough volume to my IEM system for the musicians.I have to run the sends on faders almost maxed to get enough gain to each player. Am I missing something???
@justinquinn7995
@justinquinn7995 5 жыл бұрын
What volume (what are the meters showing) for your output for your IEMs? I think peaks around -18/-12 is a tad low to set gain on a digital console so I personally set loud peaks closer to -9 or even -6, but really it's just gain structuring and if you adjust the volume on your amplifiers/devices after the board it shouldn't matter all that much. That being said if the meters for the buses feeding your IEMs are around -12/-9 (which it should be) I would see if you can adjust the input sensitivity on your IEM transmitter or turn up the IEMs themselves if at all possible.

@@justinquinn7995 That's correct. Some engineers use a range between -9 / -3.

I don't understand the term "gain". 1. The amplification characteristic of an electrical or mechanical device. 2. The amount of volume that may be achieved before acoustical feedback occurs. What does that even mean? Why not just say volume?
@marcelwierda6262

maybe check Wikipedia yourself but for your convenience: In electronics, gain is a measure of the ability of a two-port circuit (often an amplifier) to increase the power or amplitude of a signal from the input to the output port[1][2][3][4] by adding energy converted from some power supply to the signal. It is usually defined as the mean ratio of the signal amplitude or power at the output port to the amplitude or power at the input port.[1] It is often expressed using the logarithmic decibel (dB) units ("dB gain").[4] A gain greater than one (greater than zero dB), that is amplification, is the defining property of an active component or circuit, while a passive circuit will have a gain of less than one.[4] cited from my beloved absolute favorite website: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gain_(electronics) cheerio, Marcel

And maybe a less smart ass answer, and more practical for certain: the knob "gain" controls (imho) the way the input voltage from the guitar or mic or any electrical source is handled: - Low voltage signal lines are beefed up by turning up gain but don't let 'peaks' in the signal line hit the 'clip' and you see this in a LED liting up. - High voltage input would drive the amplifiers out of range and are dampened in voltage by turning the knob 'gain' down. At zero the input is literally coupled to ground and thus zero, and as the potentiometer = knob is turned up the electrical input signal is less and less lowered and we have input to amps that follow and we hear something. By subsequently setting gain 'correct' (imho as loud as possible but hardly any clipping, providing maximum headroom) the input signal is normalized and compatible with the required voltage levels at next analogue audio processing stages without unwanted distortions. With the long fader below at the desk you balance the voltages (anlogue mixers) or numbers (digital mixers) between the channels such as to your best usage. Think of gain as "input level adjustment" and faders below as how loud should this or that sound be on the speakers. I hope this makes sense ;) and edits are no problemo where I am wrong

First of all Rebekah, you're right, some mixers have just a volume, which acts both as "gain" and as a fader, but designing it this way makes the volume knob very sensitive and hard to work with Gain is the volume going INTO the channel, the fader controls the volume coming out of the channel (going to the speakers) by properly adjusting the gain, you are making the channels relatively equal in volume witch makes them much easier to work with. (check out the first vid in this series) this is part of what's called Gain Staging, which is a subset of signal flow, the signal flows from the mic, to the board, to the speakers We call it gain to avoid confusing it with the faders. both control volume, but the fader is more precise. The Gain knob allows you to make 2 very different signals the same volume, so you can mix more easily check out some videos on signal flow and gain staging for more depth. TBH text book definitions never helped me, i need to see it being used to really understand it.

Your 100 percent wrong about that not being correctly called phase. When you have two mics on something like a snare and end up with two wave forms that are identical it causes them to take each other out completely which is “PHASE CANCELLATION” that switch rotates the waveform upside down to fix the problem with a push of a button that is not called polarity lol Its all good man we all make mistakes and I appreciate the showcase of this soundboard/tech because its alot of money to invest on a piece of gear that won’t work good with your workflow.

Hey Steve, the DI Box would be connected directly to the guitar/bass, then the XLR out of the DI box would then go into one of the XLR inputs on the X32. That way you are able to lift the ground on the DI Box in case of any ground loop issues!
