Vibraphones, piano, drums, and Benny Goodman's clarinet make for a great combination on this tune. Originally a Yiddish song, it was translated to english and quickly became very popular. It has been recorded by lots of folks, but this is undoubtedly the consummate rendition, recorded in 1937, with Martha Tilton doing vocals and even a short visit at the end by Ziggy Elman and his trumpet. AND, as if that weren't enough, this is a two part version. Side one is the side usually played on the radio, but side two was recorded 8 days after side one with Ziggy Elman added to the crew. It seems to be more of a jam session (lots of those from Goodman and his gang). This is a really hot tune performed by the best.
Enjoy!

Goodman and Hampton took the opening phrases from the Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen recordings and created a Quartet recording called "Opus 3/4" on April 6, 1939 with Jess Stacy on piano and Buddy Schutz on drums (Complete RCA Victor Small Group Master Takes - Definitive Records DRCD11169)

This is the version I prefer ( as opposed to the full-orchestra version featured at the famous 1938 Carnegie Hall version ). This has a nice air of cozy intimacy that the other necessarily lacks owing to the venue. I believe vocalist Martha Tilton reprised the Carnegie Hall version on a studio reecording in the 1950s. By the way, I am intrigued by one thing especially: I did not know that this recording appeared on a 12-inch shellac release!!! As it happens, I have this same complete recording, again a two-sider, on a 10-inch pressing!!! I am struck by the fact that the whole performance could be issued, uncut, on both sizes of record. I also find it puzzling why Victor would go so far as to issue the same performance, with no edits, in both formats. If anyone can shed some light on this matter, I would be interested to know why. Would it be mainly because all phonographs or gramophones were not of dimensions such as would permit the playing of 12-inch platters? Cordially, Richard.

Thanks a lot! A few days ago, while remembering an old version of Benny Goodman's Bei mir bist du Schon that I had recorded on tape, I decided to look it up on Internet and did not come across the one I had been looking forward to hearing. Thi is the one I remember of when I took a liking to standards, swing and jazz in general.

This is a Garrard 4HF(L) from the late 1950s. I use a GE VRII cartridge which produces plenty of voltage so a preamp is not needed. The stylus is a diamond 3 mil elliptical. Seems to work for me. Enjoy the music! CDB

Just sounds Klezmer to me at the end. But following the idea of mixing things up, and nicely, it's good to know that Goodman pioneered the integration of black and white musicians in the same band.

The basic melody is very simple. Each artists does his own thing. There are so many ways to play this tune and improvise on it. So, instead of copying Goodman, just make up your own variation. I'm no genius, but I play it in at least four different ways. Or do you refer specifically to the Klezmer interludes? I doubt they have been published.
