serpentza oddly, I fell for the art gallery scam on my first of many trips to Beijing, when I was off by myself, but I wasn't terribly ripped off. I purchased one piece that the young lady painted for me while I watched, and received a gift, too. Less than ten dollars US, which was worth it, BUT I saw several other tourists being led around in the same gallery and they were being asked for thousands of renminbi for what were clearly cheap paintings. I don't know why I wasn't pressured for more money. Maybe my "student" was new at the scam.

I was scammed inside the forbidden city. The guide took us to a gallery in a small hut where Emperor PU's nephew was selling some art work on a scroll. Since this was inside the forbidden city, I did not doubt or felt any suspicion since they may have been backed by the government or atleast authenticated. It was a great set up - a lady in her 30s who spoke english, an old man in his 60s who was the nephew. Felt honoured to shake hands with him. Realised it later that it was all a scam cause there were different pics of the nephew on the internet. What really hurt me was the guide who took me there. I had given her food, water and extra tip, she stood there all that time knowing we were getting scammed. However, it was a lesson learned. GBP 50 spent on the scroll, still in hanging in my living room as a reminder of how I got duped in China. I had a great time overall and loved the people in China.
@hughm1383

I was there last decade and saw an "art exhibition" in the Forbidden City, which was actually a shop, not an exhibition, and they were selling multiple copies of the same painting. I asked them why there were multiples and they said there was a contest among art students to copy well known paintings and these were the results. I could tell it was a scam so we didn't buy any, but, like you, I had thought that they had some sort of authenticity because of the location.

"You don't get Chinese people to just speak such good English randomly approaching you on the street, it normally doesn't happen.". Now I get it... I'm a foreigner with Chinese face who don't speak a single word of Mandarin, my first week in Shanghai was horrible. I was lost in the downtown and looking for direction. Since I can't speak Mandarin, I tried to approach some foreigners who I presume work in Shanghai and should know some general direction ( judging from the way they dressed up for office job ). 3 times with 3 different foreigner, the moment I said "Excuse me... " they replied me with "Bu yao" and walk away, which later on I learn that it means no. So no wonder I was treated that way, maybe they thought I'm one of the scammers...

I had a guy attempt "the rickshaw scam" when I was in Tangier. he had a cab, not a rickshaw, but offered a tour around the city for 5 Euro. we thought it sounded like a great deal! the tour wasn't bad, but very brief and then culminated with him bringing us to a rug shop so we could buy an authentic Moroccan rug. when it became clear we weren't going to buy a rug, the guy turned very hostile and, upon dropping us back off at the port, claimed he had said 50 Euro. in hindsight, I'm glad I was with my girlfriend because she insisted we just pay him and eat our losses. looking back, I'm glad her cooler head prevailed because who knows how bad it could have gone... a kind of funny footnote to the story is, when we got back on the ferry to Algeciras, there were quite a few people toting large rolled-up rugs with them.

I was from the southwest of China. When I came to Beijing, I was scammed for several times. At the gate of PKU, a woman holding a baby told me in a very strange accent that the child was hungary. I was too simple-minded at that time and I bought her a sausage .Then she said they need money for the ticket and asked me to go down into the tubestation with her. That's when I found it weird and I just ran away. I told my family my experience and they were scared. We couldn't imagine how things would be if I agreed. How many people were there in the tubestation waiting for me? And what did they want from me? The population is just too enormous in cities like Beijing. You can meet all kinds of people. So just be careful and don't talk with strangers without caution.

They order a few bottles of wine and the end price was 5000rmb. Thanks, I love your videos. Back in 2011, I was visiting my girlfriend in Beijing. Looking back at that trip, I think I was targeted for a scam three different times. First, as in your vid, the rickshaw guy. He took us around the lake and then down an alley. He wanted us to go to see his friend for some 'traditional tea'. I mean shit, a tea house that looked like a car garage at the end of the alley? We didn't go in and he took us back. Second, staying in the Raffles Hotel for a weekend I was down in the lounge drinking a beer, alone. This is actually pretty funny. I was about to leave and retire to our room. A very attractive woman, perhaps 35 years old or so, asked if she could sit down near me. I said, "Sure, I was just leaving". Damn, did she get pissed. She said something in Mandarin and I didn't think much about it until later. A good laugh though. Third, I was visiting a Temple around the Olympic stadium area. I was on my way out and a nice young girl approached me and asked if I was American. I said yes and she wanted to talk, ' to practice her English '. I told her I was due back at home when my girlfriend gets back from work. She seemed very polite and genuine. So, I'm not sure if she was a scammer or not. I ran around Beijing alone for three weeks as my girlfriend was at work and I never felt I was being scammed. Maybe, I just got lucky. None the less, great info and thank you for sharing. I look forward to more of your videos. Cheers.

Hi Dinu, I am Chinese, and I feel sorry about what you went through when you were visiting Beijing, the scammers in Beijing does not surprise me, because I know they are exist, you know why they always target the foreigners? because most of them believe the foreigners are the rich people, and they have a lot of money, besides, the foreigners do not speak Chinese, and usually they think it is very easy for them to scam you. But if your face looks like Asian, the scammers will assume you are the Chinese, and in this way, you will never be scammed, this is very interesting, and since most of the western social media are blocked in China, the scammers always think the white guys are rich, because all the foreigners they saw is on tv, the politicians, the movie stars and from the holleywood movies, they don't have the chance to know there are avarage people in the foreign countries, youtube, google, wikepedia, facebook, twitter, instagram, all blocked, most people in China know very little about the world outside of China.

It was mostly kind of flattering haha I know they probably just wanted a picture with the very light skinned 'big nose', no real harm.

I've lived in Beijing for many years and the "daylight robbery" scam is just part of the shopping experience at places like Hong Qiao, Silk Street, etc. With experience and knowing how to bargain, you can actually get great deals in those places. It's really not a scam in the end, just a lame sales tactic that fails when you bargain.

Thankfully I wasn't scammed too badly...all I got was angry looks (mostly) and several times angrily insulted (in Mandarin) by several old ladies in different cities. I like your information on Xian, had a similar experience with regards to the Art Gallery and the old farmer scam. Xian was actually one of the worst cities I've been to with regards to scammers. Had a guide and she was pretty bad, feeding me false information...luckily I did my reading. Chinese natives took pictures or filmed me without asking my permission, usually from a distance but, as you said, no attempt of conversation. This wasn't restricted to tourist sites and open spaces but also restaurants, on the plane, on the train etc... More irritating than threatening but, again, wouldn't say it ruined my day. The concept of a person of Indian origin being born somewhere other than India was extremely Alien to them. Most being genuinely surprised but well mannered, whilst others flat out calling me a liar and asking where in India I learnt English...having spoken to many locals (in my very poor Mandarin) throughout China, most of those that did speak to me (who had never left China) were under the illusion that everyone born in England/Europe/"The West" is white. Fortunately, not everyone I spoke to was so ignorant...but this change will take time.

I somehow missed the request to share. Will do so now. Two young girls approached me and started making conversation and being so interested in chatting to me. Said they would love to practise their English and let's go to a tea shop nearby. I had time on my hands, so I thought why not. At the tea shop, I saw the exorbitant prices of the tea, and decided to just order a cheap coke instead. They ordered a pot of tea each. They kept insisting I try the tea. I took a little at their insistence just to taste. When the bill came, to £90 at the time, they said we had to split the bill three ways. I said to them I only ordered a coke, which I think was the equivalent to £3 at the time. They said that I had from their teas so had to pay my share. Not wanting to cause a scene, I just paid it and left.

I agree, Winston is a truly awesome human being and I am also grateful for people like him in the world. I find myself millimeters from getting arrested all the time in China because of my poor ability to manage my quick temper when I feel that a situation is "just morally wrong" (not really arrested, but my Chinese wife insists that is what will happen or 10 evil uncles will follow me home and beat me up.. lol...). China is not a place for people who value morality and kindness, it is an insidious place where greed, schemes, corruption, and all manners of general thuggery are thriving and publicly applauded as clever (they call it being "cong ming"). The highest elite levels of the party are promoting good social values in the propoganda, but it sure seems like 95% of the party underneath them must actually be doing the opposite with smiling faces, because virtuous morality is nowhere to be found on the streets of China..... really nowhere. Do not expect anyone to ever be truthful with you, their general feeling is that only a stupid person would be honest if they could instead lie about something for their advantage, especially if it financially advantageous.

I lived in Beijing for 6 years and this is an excellent video - I can really relate. Virtually all the scammers around Tiananmen Square claimed to be art students from Xi'an. Possibly because they think Westerners have heard of Xi'an and therefore gives them more credibility? Who knows? But don't let this put you off the regular Chinese who are good people.

This happens to non-foreigners as well. The attitude towards "scamming" isn't the same as in western countries, its almost like reverse bargaining, and is seen as clever and tricky and not suggesting a ridiculously high price is seen as missing out on an opportunity. These people are desperate to make money, its really bad but its the reality of life in china

IMO if you are stupid enough to fall for a scam like this - you deserve to be scammed.
@peoplez129
@peoplez129 8 жыл бұрын
+DawnMoon It's such an easy scam because tourists come to sight see and don't want to be rude to natives. In your home country, you typically have a reason to be somewhere....work, shopping, etc.....but tourism is basically like having nothing to do....wandering around, sight seeing, etc. That means the person is more open to doing things, like go into a local cafe to try it out. That's why those scams work soo well. Some guys even think the women are attracted to foreigners, and think they could make a new friend or even get lucky, or just like having the company of a pretty face. And people in general, have a hard time saying no to someone who seems friendly or nice. If I didn't have a drug addict sister that taught me to say no by constantly asking me for money all the time, I'd probably have a harder time saying no to people too. Basically, saying 'no' is generally a learned practice, either through experience or the advice of others.
