I've been here roughly 2 months and it's a mix of good and bad experiences with the people here..I have Korean guy friends and gf...which definitely helps but I'll still get treated differently at times even when I'm with them..sometimes a taxi driver would give me a discount other times they overcharge, at food spots (small local joints) sometimes they will hook you up, went to a couple noraebangs and they tried to overcharge us because I'm a foreigner so we kept moving till we found a normal price one..yes you will get stares...but I'm still enjoying life here for the most part

I'd like to add that I'm glad that your guest clarified the reasons to or not to move to Korea. That's true, ppl have a bad experience in the US and by visiting or moving to another area or country doesn't justify that they may or may not encounter issues there. I'm also wondering if the ppl aren't using these teaching programs to get a free ride or easy ticket to Korea, then vlog about how they have been mistreated by the ppl there. The sole focus should be to utilize the purpose of the program and sincerely want to help others there. That's good advice to say "come empty," bcuz you definitely don't want to get disappointed by expecting something and it didn't go as you anticipated.

Yes love the format.....Is teaching the main jobs that foreign can get....or is that the best place to start. Also are women experience different ....love that advice....Come empty.🌹
@skycedi5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! Teaching English is probably (generally speaking) one of the easiest jobs you can get as a foreigner in Korea, considering you are from certain countries. Other jobs are possible, but they are usually more specialized and way more competitive. Also, the experience for women here are definitely going to be different than men. That also applies to Korean women as well. So I definitely want to have foreigner women share their experiences.

I'm not being pessimistic at all I'm not trying to be but I also want you to consider one thing don't ignore the things that bother you either don't if it is a racial issue because it's going to always be for African American people are black people. Don't try to act like it's not that it will make you feel worse trying to pretend that is something is not if you are having issues make them understand you as a black person don't just try to understand them as a Korean make them also understand you make them help them understand us as black people because you need to exchange information about each other both ways so that you both learn to respect each other and live comfortably but don't deny yourself the experience by not allowing yourself to feel what you feel and allowing yourself to realize that yes Asian can be racist against black people and it's okay to tell them that listen Okay that that behavior is not nice it's not cool and I'm saying I want you to understand me I respect you as a human respect me it's all right to let them know either just because somebody is moved to meet in a different okay it don't okay them treat me with speckles both ways I don't care what country you know and I think a lot of times I've been seeing a lot of blogs about black people in Korea and a lot of foreign country some good some bad but I realized that a lot of black people shy away from saying it's a racial issue as if it's some kind of taboo understand that you are going to a foreign country where people don't look like you and it's okay to be not happy don't do the thing is don't dwell in the unhappiness just make them understand and make them know you let them get to as a human being let them get to know you and I feel like that's when you won't do the comparison of do US and in Korea

Great content, cool setup! So right now teaching in South Korea seems like the best choice for me which is how I came across your channel. But I do have some questions that your videos seem to touch on but not fully. In this video you guys touched on discrimination and I just wanted to ask that based off of your experiences, discrimination is racially motivated i.e. the color of your skin or nationality motivated i.e. not being Korean or being American specifically? Being a minority in the U.S. also from the south I’ve had some experiences where I am stared at for being the only Hispanic person in a store. Or people have assumed I am some sort of employee because I seem out of place. Even outside the U.S. I have experienced the stare lol (on a flight in Germany I was not only the only person of color but also the only person not wearing business attire). Has discrimination for you guys ever gone further than the typical stare? When people try to discriminate me or make me feel like less I don’t really care so I’m not saying it would discourage me from taking the step to go teach in South Korea, I was just asking to know the extent to which it goes, whether it be your personal experience or that of someone you guys have witnesses. Thanks ** video idea: the do’s and don’t’s of South Korea it could be within the terms of teaching and social interactions in the schools similar to that point you made in “5 reasons not to teach in South Korea” when you talked about hierarchy and having to bow to those higher up than you. or social interactions in general similar to the video collab you did with those 3 other guys where y’all talked about how the young people are supposed to face away from the elder of the group when taking a drink and that the youngest has to serve the drinks for everyone else. So basically social cues and mannerisms.
@skycedi5 жыл бұрын
I love your ideas and suggestions and I realize that I should probably dive further into those issues! So i'll be planning to make some follow up videos on those topics, highlighting not only my experiences but the experiences of others. Also, as I mentioned in the video, I'll have Mike back on to talk specifically about being a Black man in Korea. But to address some of your questions, here is my opinion based off of what I know, seen, experienced, and even studied. Racist and incidents of discrimination (at least many of the cities in Korea) are not as common as the KZbin world would lead many to believe. Stares you will get, but even those, you won't get too often, especially in Seoul. Heck, I live in Daejeon where there aren't as many foreigners as in Seoul, let alone darker skin foreigners, and I don't get many stares at all. People just don't care. They are minding their business. Out of the people who stare, there are 1) the older Koreans who have been so accustomed to their country being full of mostly Koreans (some being, yes, racist and/or just more comfortable with their own ethnic group & culture) and 2) those who stare just because you stand out. They don't mean any harm by it. You just, well stand out. It's natural. I do that myself. But that's not to say that you won't get judgemental stares here and there. I haven't yet (to my knowledge). NOW, on the flip side, there are racists Koreans. There are those that will discriminate, especially to those of darker skin tones. But it's not an everyday occurance from my experience and understanding. It's wrong, JUST PLAIN WRONG. But it's an unfortunate reality from a culture and country that is just beginning to be exposed to other cultures. Historically, Korea (in addition to being one of the most homogeneous societies in the world) was always known as the 'Hermit' country, always to themselves. This has been changing more recently (past few decades). I would like to add that generally speaking, Koreans are more 'accepting' of foreigners (or should I say, connect better with foreigners) who adapt to the culture and learn the language. This is HUGE. I've only been here for one year and mostly spent time in Daejeon and Seoul. So for me, I can speak on my experience. Oh, let me share an incident that happened with me and my mom when she visited. We were on a subway train in Busan and this older lady (around my mom's age) just kept staring at me and my mom. She was probably trying to figure out why we were together lol. Now, I could have interpreted that in a way that would lead me to believe she was either racist or judgemental. She actually ended up asking my mom "how do you know this foreigner?" out of pure curiosity. So they got into conversation and my mom explained that I was her son and she married a black man after moving to the U.S. The lady was surprised but thought that was interesting and hasn't seen too many people like that. She was really nice to me and my mom for the remainder of the train ride. I thought that was an interesting occurrence, which I'll probably share in a future video. Now, I'm not bound by my current opinion. This may change the longer I live here and the more I experience. I'm totally open to learning! Anyways, I hope this helps in some way. I appreciate your comment.

I would like to see more topics like this with Americans relocating to Korea and their experiences, but are not or did not end up there like the typical military expat. We often see people who end up overseas because of their experience from being in the military. Rather it was working in federal government, military spouse, dependent or active duty. I want to hear from people like your guest here that moved for something new and different from home. With a regular job living every day life as a foreigner. Sorry that was so long 🤭!

Good interview and a nice background setup. But I have to be real here for anyone to sugar coat Korea like candy heaven, is not being realistic. I have friends and a family member who live in Korea as teachers, and because of the color of their skin they was look down on and did not get proper respect. Also my best friend who is Korea American, was look down on for being korean American while in korea so it is not all roses there.
@skycedi5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Just so there’s no misunderstanding, we are not sugar coating anything. We have our own personal experiences to draw from, so we speak on what we know. Also, we realize that everyone has their unique experiences as a foreigner (or Korean-America ), some good, some bad. So many factors and variables involved in making up someone’s experiences. So with that said, you don’t have to worry about any sugar coating :)
@peggyroyster37595 жыл бұрын
@@skycedi Thanks for your kind reply, yes I do understand different individuals will have a totally unique experiences.
@EJKim-zk9st2 жыл бұрын
I don't think they sugarcoated at all. Which part did they sugarcoat? You just think that because they didn't focus on telling negative sides of korea. Also, what you described is just hearsay. It's not even your own experience. As for "looking down" of course, there's racism in south korea. If there's a country that doesn't have racism, please sign me up. But also there are expats in south korea who look down koreans and their entitlement goes through the roof. Ooo wee. They don't even bother to learn korean at all. Of course there are much more nicer expats in south korea who are just like Mike here. Listen to Mike's advice. Expect nothing.

Hey man, been following you for a while. Love the positivity dude! Just wanted to make a couple of suggestions that might make your interviews more palatable 1. You tend to repeat words a lot like "video" and in this particular "video, you said the word foreigner like 5 sentences in a row. I know it sounds nitpicky but if you're planning on becoming a better interviewer , you're gonna have to get better at words and using synonym as to not sound redundant. 2. Your interviews dont have much substance. I feel like you could be going much more in depth with your subjects. Try to plan ahead of time and ask better leading questions that allow them to give more insight into their experiences. I really wish you all the luck! I may not be correct but these are just my personal observations. Hope I havent offended you my Korean brother!

Advice to all Koreans: Stop using the word "foreigner." This word draws the line and hampers non Koreans and Koreans to really connect and have genuine relationship. There will be an overall great benefit to Korea once Seoul becomes an international city like New York, London, Tokyo, and Paris.
