The industry takes so much time in their life its unhealthy, but showing people their stories and making them happy through them are their goals. If she didnt want a life like this she could work as a salaryman or another job thats safer, but she chose to pick this one because she wants to do it. This doesnt mean I support the low pay. However its really expected for them to have low pay. People these days dont use their tvs much and online streaming companies arent paying enough for these anime. Exactly, the entire Japanese economy has been stagnant for the past 20 years. European and American bankers withdrew their investment in the 90's when Japan was going to become a global economic superpower. The struggles of the anime artists is just the result of economic warfare.
@Necrostrike5 жыл бұрын
@@MiguelDLewis That's an excuse. The Japanese exploit their own and fellow Asian immigrants without mercy, and that has existed long before Western meddling; it's a malaise in the entirety of Asia. Japan perverts the ideals of honor, diligence, and individual sacrifice for the group. What actually happens is that those on the top extract from these virtues at the expense of those on the bottom, and since their culture heavily penalizes people who shake the boat, change is much slower to come. This is not just the Japanese. I work in biomedical sciences, and I avoid Asian bosses like the plague. One Chinese PI would pass by 6:45 am by each cubicle of his lab to check his post docs were early and didn't leave before 6pm, as well as demanding they work on Fridays. Indian clinicians were no different in their expectations of work hours. It's a cultural issue that values productivity and monetary gain above all else, and Europeans have gotten it right in growing out of this mindset.
@MiguelDLewis5 жыл бұрын
@@Necrostrike I think we're both correct. There are both cultural and geopolitical conditions contributing to this issue. I think you're right that some higher ranking Japanese elites exploit the virtues of their subordinates, but that's been true for all cultures since antiquity. But I disagree that economic warfare from Western powers didn't play apart. The young lady being interviewed said that this current system was put in place 20 years ago. That's when the US and Europe pulled investment out of Japan, fearing their economic rise would lead to them possibly even resurrecting the Japanese Empire. Nothing occurs in a vacuum. We have to look at Japanese culture as well as the culture that rules over and dominates Japanese culture. PS: I'm not saying this to vilify Europeans. Indeed, the Roman Empire abused Europeans in the same way for thousands of years. It's all just a big cycle of trauma and abuse it seems. The cultural cannot be separated from the economic

As a fresh graduate CGI artist (21 years old), I could relate to whatever that was mentioned by this passionate animator. Things isn't easy as an artist but at the same time people wonder why don't we quit doing it? Do it as a hobby instead? When she said that drawing was all she was good at , I felt that too. We've put thousands of hours , tears, blood, anti social life into moulding our artsy skills that we just can't quit halfway through. We've gone this far to have a position in the industry that quitting now just doesn't feel correct. We've accepted the fact that we will be averagely wealthy for the rest of our lives at this point. Like the woman said, "money is not her concern" is because we sacrificed that part for the chance of creating art as a way of living. It sounds dumb and stupid to the society, especially to our own respective parents, we are always looked down upon by the society as "special" and poor. They would only acknowledge the artist when they actually becomes successful in the industry but that's like 10% of millions of passionate artist. I myself, worked my ass off to develop a portfolio that was deemed as "acceptable industry standard" and got a job. Before this, I was rejected several times for about 2 years. What they say is true, u need the skills to pay the bills. The problem with alot of poor and homeless artist is that they are stuck in the middle of commiting to their career. An artist needs to crash hard one way through to see what's at the peak of the mountain. Hence, why many people say it's not rewarding and they give up on their dreams. It's really not easy and it's certainly not enjoyable if money is important to you. However, in the end what I have learned is that no job is going to pay you enough to be rich if you don't have a business. As an artist, we need to think like a businessman as well, many artists are bad at this. Create a game, create a production house company, go into a different art related industry, not just animation. Go into product design. Video production, whichever that you can still find joy while living comfortably. I hope that once this lady have years of experience on how the pipeline works, she could venture and get a team to start her own animation company. That is the only way where she could be paid fairly.

Why not make independent projects? Like manga or something. I just don't really get it. Manga, even an unsuccessful one, is still going to bring you money and some sort of attention. With time, you're most likely to earn more and more for your work which you're the one who decides how to do. I'm not trying to say that comic artists work less but in general I'm just arguing that there's much more potential in this field from however you see it. The only problem may be that the person is not that good at writing stories which is a barrier that many go through by getting a partnet (like Death Note authors)
