A genius in his own right, this guy is so different then a lot of the spiritual teachers you see today, less mainstream which i like too, but the difference is that he actually believes/knows what he is saying is true, as oppossed to just saying it, and explains everything with so much passion and intelligence I don't know how he's not as famous as eckhart tolle right now (maybe that's a good thing). he addresses the most inner and fundemental issues and gets right to the heart of the matter, which is what we all need to do in the end, in other words he wants the 'truth', similarly to that of Jesus, the Buddha, Ramina and so many others before him.

That is exactly the experience I had-I knew there was truth splattered throughout my life,things I had experienced, read,seen,heard, but it wasn't until I came upon Rupert that I was able to piece things together and start to make sense of what was there all along. It's like Rupert was my dictionary,encyclopedia and idiots guide all rolled into one! It was there all along but I couldn't read it until he showed me how.

There is no need for all of us to grasp all the teaching has to offer. Most of these realizations come spontaneously after some time. But the essential is to drop the identification with any object, meaning body or any aspect of the mind - thought, perception, feeling or sensation and to dwell in our own being which is formless awareness. There is this mind that says that you have to understand something to get liberated and making the effort to understand it, and there is our true identity just being with out any effort. As long as there is a longing for intellectual understanding our mind is just playing tricks on us and perpetuating its own existence as the "I" that wants to know. We are already that what we seek. You dont need a space ship to find your "Self". We always were and are awareness in ever-lasting NOW.
@TheKstuart
@TheKstuart 7 жыл бұрын
Some of that is true... but we still need the mind. As Rupert implies in the beginning, fish are not enlightened. While we are in deep sleep, we are doing exactly what you have just advised - and it does not produce realization. Ramana Maharshi once said: "Of course we are employing the mind. It is well known and admitted that only with the help of the mind can the mind be killed." In order to become realized, we need the mind to discern the correct path - what to do and what not to do. Ramana warns: "This does not mean salvation. Such a condition is termed manolaya or temporary stillness of thought. Manolaya means concentration, temporarily arresting the movement of thoughts. As soon as this concentration ceases, thoughts, old and new, rush in as usual; and even if this temporary lulling of mind should last a thousand years, it will never lead to total destruction of thought, which is what is called liberation from birth and death. The practitioner must therefore be ever on the alert and enquire within as to who has this experience, who realises its pleasantness. Without this enquiry he will go into a long trance or deep sleep [yoga nidra]. Due to the absence of a proper guide at this stage of spiritual practice, many have been deluded and fallen a prey to a false sense of liberation."

Yes, I agree the reflection and contemplation of the insight of what you are must be trough the mind of course. I am just saying what is needed in my experience to have the insight in the first place so you can realize the implications of that and reflect it in your waking state of course. Yes mind is crucial for liberation, just its absence is needed for a brief moment where you realize that it is awareness that knows it self and the thinking mind and the thinking mind has nothing to do with that. Other than that i also agree that thinking "conscious" mind is very needed to create the understanding of the experience. Blessings.
@pepi357bbq
@pepi357bbq 7 жыл бұрын
I dont know, it took this one to understand the whole teaching about 20min. Some people wonder around their own thoughts for years,decades... I dont think anybody knows why 99% of ppl on this planet have trouble knowing and understanding the implications of the insight that you are something boundless except the fascination with our own identification with ego/mind/body.
@pepi357bbq
@pepi357bbq 7 жыл бұрын
Yes i understand, but it is a bit of a paradox for the mind. You can truly know that all is awareness-consciousness only when you go beyond the identification with limited objects like thoughts, ego, body and experience your self as pure empty unlimited awareness. The pain comes from identification with limited objects and liberation from pain comes with the recognition and insight which is like: Oh, I was never that limited object, I only believed that is what I am, and simply overlooked what I always was :-).
@pepi357bbq
@pepi357bbq 7 жыл бұрын
In order to recognize it self as pure awareness, it "forgets" it self and creates the ego identification which brings pain and separation and suffering and motivates the human being to give up that identification so it can consciously reflect what it really is. Thats the difference between us and animals. They know they are but they can not consciously know what they are. That doesnt change the fact they are expressions of the same awareness.

Being aware means that which is that is being aware. Consciousness is a noun that reifies a way of functioning into an object. Awareness is the activity of being (that which is). Consciousness qualifies that activity - being aware functioning consciously and unconsciously simultaneously as when our heart keeps beating unconsciously while we consciously attend to something else. We are consciously aware when awake, unconsciously aware when asleep.

Hey Rupert :) that Oxford proffessor was unwittingly pointing to truth- awareness is that which is aware of the content. It is only when awareness is aware that there is awareness along with the content, that one has the ability to see that content is something that floats in and by, not a fatalistic reality.. i woke up this morning aware of thoughts that were accumulating from yesterday which needed to procede and carry on a theme. *those thoughts were drama, deffensive feelings and righteousness created at work.. long complicated story.. If i was not aware that i am aware (+) of the content, the annoying heavy mental construct would have carry on as some fatalistic truth, a reality. But i was free to let them flood that awareness and they faded away. They are easily put to the trash. I understand that the proffessor meant something else. But when i heared it, it made sense... when awareness that i am AWARE of thoughts is there, every thought can eadily be put to the trash .. i dont have to entertain it

I find this very interesting and even believe that it is possible to access awareness that is not accessible to this body’s senses, but for most of us, there is a limit insofar as we at most times do not access mental processes occurring ”inside” other people’s minds. Nor do we access experiences of things going on away from our senses. Wouldn’t that qualify as a limit? So in that respect, we are limited by location, right? Isn’t that sort of the point of this dualistic world, the possibility for the source to experience itself from different perspectives?

I am trying to write my final senior project thesis paper for university on the nature of the Self (consciousness / awareness / the ontology of being) by using Indian philosophy, specifically Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, to justify and argue for the transcendence of the separate sense of self in favor of identifying with the pre-reflective content of consciousness (the screen instead of the movie). Could anyone recommend any philosophical academic texts/sources that I can use which align as closely as possible to the discussions put forth by Rupert Spira ? (with an intellectual angle on philosophical concepts) Anyone got any ideas that could help me out ? :)

Id say from a programming point of view, instead of just knowing the output , or result of something.to be aware is to know how the system works, input, process and output. knowing why and how it exists.
@sammiller9855

There needs to be a further distinction between primal consciousness as a medium for experience, which we may assume all animals have, and reflective awareness of self that higher complex organism possessed such as humans. Awareness of awareness is a verbal or non-verbal thought, "I am aware", no? We have no evidence that a dog, for example, is aware of being aware. It is likely simply aware, experiencing and acting by instinct. Consciousness by itself would have no distinction between it and the contents of experience. It seems there needs to be an additional aspect of mind (e.g., intellect) that can reflect on experience for it to be aware of being aware. Perhaps that's what the professor was getting at.

One in its singularity can never become many unless it mixes itself up with another. Consciousness only phanthomized plurality in itself by assuming ignorance. The universe is a big lie that consciousness tells itself. When you are settled in your true and pure Self you will be hundred percent certain that it is impossible for a universe to come into existence where consciousness is all that there is in its solitude existence.

Hello midiwave, seeing you were quite helpful last time I have another question if you don't mind? How can I make an effort in life if, one, I am awareness...because as far as i know, awareness can only witness/see/know...it doesnt 'try' or 'make effort' but it witnesses it. And, two, life is just happening, in so much as the self/awareness doesn't control it. So does effort just happen by itself and I’m witnessing it? Ramana Maharshi has said 'attend to what you came here for' which means 'do something' but then how can you 'do' when really you just 'are'....he also says that life is preordained - this would also mean if I'm meant to understand then it will be and if not, that will be. See my confusion? thanks for trying to help. Excuse the language side of things.

How is it you know what a fish is aware of Rupert? Or whether they are higher or lower beings than are you. They are not all consumed with asking these ridiculous questions and just relax hanging out in water eating and avoiding being eaten while pursuing another fish with which to do the "i'll put some sperm on 'em if you will drop some eggs" or we can do any form of mating dance you like if that is not your style. Since Rupert says we are "dumb sea vegetables" (Ha!) let me first make sure you are a fish and not a rock! Anyone want to help me "flesh out" this "the fish who did not even know it was a fish" story for me? Sharks must know doncha think. They are at least aware enough to spit out the surfboard and usually the surfer too because "those humans" don't taste good. Just asking how Rupert knows? Maybe the fish does too---made of awareness! And maybe it is not so dumb to have to have so many neurons--like us! Just a few will do. d
