Thank you for sharing your experience. I am joining the Air Force at 36 and my ship date is Dec, 5th. I’m joining to be able to provide more for my 7 year old daughter and to better my life. My daughter’s mom took me to court and now I’m dealing with a huge custody battle. She also makes fun of me for wanting to join at such an old age. I plan to stay the course and leave things in gods hands. I hope my daughter understands the decision I’ve made to be able to provide more for her.

After every war, there's drawdowns in personnel. After Vietnam, it was RIFT (Reduction in Forces). Other names were Force Shaping, Palace Chase, and Blue-to-Green. Good and deserving airmen who intended on remaining active were politely kicked out. There's no guarantee that you can stay to reenlist. You also have to pass P/T tests, get good evaluations, and sometimes do volunteer work to qualify. So, would you be better off or worse later on if you're not selected? Plus living in dorms with teenagers for months is irritating (getting called "mama"). A DWI (happens to good people), domestic incidents, credit problems, capricious supervisor, low evaluations, and many other factors may have you denied for reenlistment. Civilian administrators (who've never served a day) now can control an airmen's future. How much "easier" will it be then?

Being reserves, and Air Force Reserves at at that, it should be easier to deal with than active duty. You wouldnt have to deal with the same level of nonsense with someone being a lot younger than you bullying you around because they have so much higher rank than you quite like you would if you were active duty. *And again.... this is Air Force.* other branches like Marines and Army would be even worse with rank. A sergeant in the Army would *DEMAND* that you stand at parade rest for them, shut your mouth, and be treat you like a little kid because you have no rank, regardless of how much younger you are. Not to say that people like this don't exist in the Air Force, but arguably not quite to the same degree because the cultures are not quite the same. The Air Force is the youngest of the branches and isn't focused on infantry like the Marines and Army are. So you would not have AS much crap to worry about. Good luck.

So funny. As a vocal instructor i am always assessing peoples voice as they speak. I would not be able to handle hearing all those hoarse voices from so much screaming without trying to give them some vocal exercises. haha. It's that nurturing behavior that starts to come out when your older, and you're more concerned about others. Wish you well on your journey.

What branch are you joining? If it’s Air Force, they will take you until 40. You can turn 40 in BMT, but can’t be 40, or older at the time. I have heard of people getting in at 41, but that’s a lot of paper work, age waivers, etc… Best of luck to you!

Thank you for making the videos. I'm going through MEPS in a few weeks and I'm 37. Great to know what it's like in BMT but at the same time now I'm afraid of the possibilty of getting assigned for responsible roles because English is my second language and I'm not that fluent. Have you seen any person like me in the training? Were they handling situations well?
@johnnalogic87453 жыл бұрын
I would not be overly concerned. There was another person in my flight who was older and being assigned as a "formal" leader was not her desire. I note English was also her second language. I believe the MTIs have a sense of who are going to be good leaders. If they ask or assign you to you it, I would actually encourage you to step out of your comfort zone (they probably see something in you that you don't recognize yourself). That said, if you truly didn't want to do it and they wanted to assign it to you, you could say you would prefer not to. Our MTIs were really good about allowing us to be honest, so long as we were respectful and honorable in what we were saying.
@mk26793 жыл бұрын

Wow, there is so much I have experienced and could share in just the last couple of years with BMT, Tech School and being in my unit. I would always encourage you to try and figure things out, but don't waste too much time. If you have tried to figure something out and cannot find the answers then don't be afraid to ask questions. Just be sure to ask respectfully and in the right time/moment. My squadron encourages us to always ask questions in the moment if they are sharing/teaching something (which I am grateful about) that we don't understand or know.

Oh I believe that single dormitories may be for officer training school. When you go in listed, it is an entire flight housed in one room. There are 52 beds in four rows of 13. No privacy, no time to myself. You are required to have a wingman with you at all times.

How out of shape were you before you decided to enlist? I'm asking because out of all the things I've heard to be aware of and to prepare for, it's the one thing I'm most concerned about. I already have my degree completed, so studying or taking assessments or tests doesn't bother me. The physical aspect does concern me, though, since I'm pretty sure most people would say I have a dad bod. A few years ago before I moved to where I am now I was running several miles a week, I'd walk, etc, I was really fit, but I can't say that anymore. Anyways thanks for the info.

I am 36, went to MEPS passed the medical, and my recruiter is waiting for me to pick a job but the jobs I want are not listed or I didnt qualify for. My issue is I have a good stable good paying job as a civilian and I already have a bachelor's degree but my recruiter somehow said I can commission as an officer after I enlist. Most people I know are recommending me not to join if my life is stable but I wanted to give back as a new American citizen. What do you guys think.
@johnnalogic87452 жыл бұрын
My life was stable and still is stable. I have a really great career and two bachelors degrees. Applying to be commission is an option (but I probably also need to apply for a waiver due to age). If you have the ability to go in as an officer, I would go that route first. If not, then enlisting is fine too. That said, there are people who will always tell you the bad parts. Their experiences belong only to them, just like my experiences belong only to me and perception plays a role. Yes, there are challenges and things that frustrate me that I would like to change. However, I chose to serve my Country and would do this all over again. My only suggestion is to listen to those voices that are the most pertinent to your life (for me it is God first, my husband, siblings and best friend). I prayed long and hard about this decision and knew it was right for me (my husband was on board of course).
