I'm a mechanic and I had a guy bring his van in almost a year after I had told him to get his intake gaskets replaced for this very reason. He left the van after work. I started it the next morning and drove it into the shop. I had one of my guys replace the gaskets and change the oil and filter which is standard procedure. The worker went to start it and it acted like the battery was dead. We tried several things before finally figuring out that it was locked up. It had been driven for almost a year with leaky intake gasket and antifreeze getting mixed in with the oil. The owner was livid but it wasn't our shop's fault. He said it was running fine when he dropped it off which was true but it also ran fine when it was pulled in and then never ran again. After the owner left and researched leaky intake gaskets on the internet he came back and apologized. He then understood that driving for a year after he was originally told about the problem was what caused it. This is a real problem and the mechanic probably wasn't responsible even though it initially was started before the oil was changed. That's not good for it but a minute or two shouldn't ruin the engine unless it was ready to go anyway.

If the engine had gunk in the oil then the engine would have gunk stuck to the walls of the block, and just having the oil changed doesn’t get rid of the thick gunk.
@1967davethewave3 жыл бұрын
Some of the gunk will get stuck to the inside of the engine but it's the stuff that isn't stuck to engine that is mixed in with the oil that needs to be removed. It gets circulated through the bearings which are pretty delicate and it destroys them as was probably the case in this instance.
