I love how both extremes are insane. I hope one day we can come to a happy medium where staying home when sick is still accepted, but we don't panic every time someone sneezes.

In this case, I do think being overly cautious is better. Yes, I come from a germophobe household (partially because we are all immunocompromised) but our caution has also just caused us to get sick less frequently then other people. Apart from getting sick “not being fun,” when you choose to go out knowing you are probably sick, you risk passing on the sick to a medically vulnerable person. Of course, the “safe” one can be taken to the extreme as shown in this video (which is partly exaggerating for humor) but I would definitely fall into “better safe than sorry”

Sadly, I don't see it happening so far. I've witnessed tons of people being like, "I got a negative covid test, but I'm not feeling well, so I'll just wear a mask so I can still do_______." Me too! We used to get so much shit for calling out sick when I worked in the restaurant business and then of course everyone would end up getting sick! I was one of the few that put myself and others first and called out if I was getting sick, I always thought it was so selfish that people would do that and then you often prolong your own recovery when you should be resting. Thats one good thing that has come from this fiasco.

I think most people went to work sick before Covid because they were afraid they would lose their jobs if they didn't. Now, with the labor shortage, more companies are realizing that they can't continue to treat their workers like that if they want to keep them, because there are more options out there. Hopefully this new attitude is something that outlasts the pandemic!

Exactly! Plus, a lot of people don't have benefits like sick days, PTO, or vacation days, so if you don't work, you don't get paid, and if you need to make rent or buy food...there's no choice. I don't know if that's going to change...

It was also acceptable (even laudable!) to send sick children to school and to give awards for "no days missed" at school (while counting sick days as 'missed days' as if one had a choice about it, so many parents didn't let kids miss ANY days, sick or not). It was laudable to essentially teach children to ignore their own bodies and to put productivity over health (of self OR others). Granted, some go a bit overboard to the other direction now, with every little symptom being treated as contagious-material, but the reality is that we have a lot to learn from the last two years. And, perhaps, some tools to take from it. (BTW - LOVE the sweatshirt !!! Checked the merch and it seems there's none listed? Will there be more?)

ok, speaking from the perspective of someone living in Germany, with mandatory health insurance, paid sickness leave and few or zero medical bills- I hope that we get through this soon, and I hope this paranoia goes away eventually. I've had many moments like this, slowly walking away from people who coughed on public transport, postponing an appointment at the dentist's until the last minute because, oh well, the dentist's office is THE place to catch anything, calculating the best time to go to certain shops, monitoring my physical condition - "Is this a regular migraine, or the first symptom of Covid? My stomach is upset...I'm feeling hot! I need to get tested!" This is such a challenging and difficult time, and of course it's taking a toll on our mental health. I always enjoy your videos, and especially the ones about the pandemic. Being able to laugh at ourselves while dealing with this situation is really helpful. Thank you so much.

In 2018, a coughing virus went around my kids' elementary school. For several months there was always somebody coughing. My daughter had a mild version of it, but it hit my son and I hard. The doctor said that it was just a virus and there was nothing that could be done. It just needed to "run its course". He said we were clear to attend work and school and that we should come back if it continued for more than 3 weeks. We had that cough for almost the full 3 weeks. But there wasn't anything else we could have done differently back then. If a child missed 6+ days of school, the district sent you a warning note that if your child misses 10 days of school, you could be fined and the police could come to your house. I understand that there are situations where this is needed, but when the absences are excused (especially with a doctor's note), the district is just shaming & punishing parents for being responsible and keeping their sick kids home.

Here's what drives me crazy- even in The Before Time I hated when people came to work sick. And I'm a dental hygienist and patients would call and say, ''hey, I have a cold, can I still come in?'' And the front desk would say ''Sure! They hygienist wears a mask, no worries!" I would be livid. But it was acceptable and I was the one being a jerk about it. Most people need to be told how to have common sense. Like now a restaurant will text you when it's 'safe' to come in, but urgent care will pack the waiting room with 50 people who are there for covid tests. Common sense is still really rare unfortunately. One of my favorites is people who take down their masks and lean in close to talk to you. Then pull it up and walk away.

I think the point is that it doesn't matter if it's covid or not. We shouldn't be ignoring our illnesses and exposing them to others. I don't want your cold any more than I want your flu or your covid. I don't want your germs. As a society we should be respectful enough of each other to consider that when going out anywhere while sick and exposing others for our own selfishness. Seriously. Decisions like that are selfish and can be expensive. And don't even get me started on people who came to gatherings (parties, etc) ill. When I finally had to run off the floor and throw up in the bathroom (and almost didn't make it) he finally told me to go home. I shudder at the thought of how many customers I probably infected because of that.

I was one of those that went to work always. My test was always that if I started thinking about the nice things I could do at home, I couldn't justify it. Halfway productive at work seemed better than no productivity at home (of course, we've wrecked that part). There is one time I probably wouldn't have gone, and definitely shouldn't have gone, but it was December 28th and by George, I wasn't losing my perfect attendance award in the last 3 days! Once the company abolished the perfect attendance to stop people from working sick, it started making more sense to me...

And it just prolonged your sickness bc you were stressed, in pain, weak and still had to meet deadlines and shit. You nailed it, “We do what’s expected” that’s what we were and are still thinking, or not thinking perhaps. We as a society are basically conditioned to be followers and do what’s expected. It’s more than overdue that we question all of “what’s expected” and stop following along to things that intuitively don’t make sense because society says they do.

Society is so weird! I remember pre covid, I worked through strep, the flu, etc. High fevers and mild delerium, bathroom issues, the works. But bills had to be paid! There was no way around it. Now with covid, companies are slowly starting to provide minimal paid sick leave for employees. But the majority still don't. This is something that definitely should be addressed. As for personal pride with working through illness, what is up with that?! Why do we type A's pride ourselves in pushing past our limits? As a society, we just need to chill 😅

It takes a week to get a doctors appointment if your super sick, otherwise you have to go to emergency and wait for six hours with a room full of sick people to be told you have the stomach flu. Oh yeah, you also have to pay the emergency room fee, the doctor fee, and all the lab tests. Not to mention the fact that you were there for ten hours feeling dreadful and infecting those around you. I recall a few years back my daughter got Hand Foot and Mouth disease from someone at her kindergarten and subsequently gave it to me as I apparently didn't have any immunity to it, I didn't realize that i had HF&M disease until I got really really sick and had spent an entire day at work with a 105f fever... but as a single mom in the USA, I continued to work, not realizing I had a fever until I got home... I felt like COMPLETE crap all day. Headache, body chills, and unknowingly a fever... so when I finally made it to my doctor the next day thinking I had the flu... it turns out I had what my daughter had caught at her daycare... but for me it was much worse...

We went on a cruise to celebrate our anniversary, and we were BOTH SO SICK! My husband's hands were horrifying. He spent the whole cruise trying to hide them. The blisters on my feet made wearing shoes basically impossible, and my sore throat was so bad I couldn't eat or drink ANYTHING. I lost 10 lbs while on a one week cruise. Unheard of! And yes, we would have cancelled.... if we'd had any trip insurance. But we didn't, so we went, and it was legit the worst week of my life. This is so funny! However in the beginning of 2020 we still have that same mentality and that’s probably why Covid spread so quickly. I remember going into work as a teacher having Covid passing out and being told that I needed a doctors note in order not to come in if I was out for three days. So here I am super sick, barely hanging on , trying to get to a doctor.I tried to get a doctors note and she told me I was just being lazy. The entire time I had Covid and I had to work through that until we had a lockdown. I was consistently sick for two weeks without a break couldn’t take more than two days off because I would get docked.I think our capitalistic tendencies towards forcing people to be productive is what causes Covid to spread. It’s not the only thing there are other factors but being in a society that values work over people doesn’t help.

I agree that many policies regarding being ill were problematic (they still are), however it is not "capitalistic tendencies" that are "forcing people to be productive". It's simply a lack of caring for the humans around you as being individuals with needs. This is also often a result in and of many a corrupt government and culture of various economic systems; greed which causes dehumanization reaches its fingers into ALL economic and political systems. Throughout history in all sorts of cultures (including non-capitalistic & capitalistic) management demands people work or get on the chopping block. There is a reason chickens which stop laying eggs get thrown into the stew pot. As with chickens, people who don't work are a drain on resources. It's not pretty or nice, but workers who collapsed from illness or injury weren't sent home to eat pottage, they usually became part of the brick and mortar of whatever they were building. In the company I work for, BEFORE the pandemic HR would remind people that "Sharing is Not Caring" and encouraged employees to stay home when ill (and didn't requiring a doc note), and the company is not a non-profit (although there are many charities the company supports) but is nicely profitable. Policies are in place by whoever is in management/ownership, and that means individuals are making those policies, not an economic/political system. Just to remind, non-capitalist societies are also made up of individuals.

At my baby’s 2-month appointment I wore a normal mask instead of a KN-95, and no one else was wearing masks and it was shoulder-to-shoulder people in the waiting room. And I caught SOMETHING. My husband still had to work. I still had to stay home with the kids. So we found some actual NIOSH approved N-95’s at Home Depot, my husband and I wore them for a week, I slept in the basement, and I was the only one who got sick. Did my toddler think I was silly? Yes. Did my newborn search for me and not be able to find me? Sadly, yes. But whether I had a breakthrough Covid case (tests came back negative), RSV, the flu, or a sinus infection, no one else got sick. Stay safe out there!

My husband and I both had the China flu together. We were not real sick. Mild cold like symptoms. I cooked every meal, shared a bathroom with everyone else in the house and my 9 year old drank out of my glass twice. Not one of my 3 children got sick. So strange.

My kids have a stomach bug and I had to call the nurse’s line to ask a question about my baby and I’m so glad the ER nurse acknowledged it’s a stomach bug and didn’t go on some C rant.

I couldn't agree more. I don't want your cold either! It doesn't have to be covid - I don't want it, whatever you've got. Stay home, or if you must go out in public, be respectful enough of each other to wear a mask to contain your germs to yourself.

I remember working in the food industry, and I was super sick like I fainted, had bronchitis, super bad migraine, vertigo...my assistant manager asked me for a sick note when for two years I didn't miss a day of work and they never asked any other employees for one especially the ones who missed once a week. I said I am not coming in, and if you ever ask me again I am quitting. My boss had a talk with the AM. It's interesting and very spot on how accurate this video is. Jobs used to be like you will be fired for being sick and I remember that at another job. Again had the same type of sickness although I didn't faint made me come in, and then the regional came in and went yeah you're not staying you never miss work. I really hope that jobs/schools keep it the stay home if you're sick deal. We all deserve to stay healthy especially since where we live multiple schools are shutting down, thank God we are remote but I hope everyone is safe and healthy..

Growing up with my mom being a nurse, I remember going to school sick all the time. She never wanted us to miss a day. I remember once my mom taking me to a doctor appointment before school and I got to stay home with a fever but I kept telling my mom I felt great and was ready for school.

This is SO true. I used to be like that, too. Instead of not working for 2 or 3 days to get better, I would be sick for 2 weeks because I didn't let my body rest and I just kept working. It's crazy how MUCH we have to be impacted in order for things to finally change. 🤯

Even back before 2020 when I was sick, I stayed home. Always thought it was irresponsible of people going to work/school when sick. All you’re doing is spreading whatever you have to everyone else. I realize some people had the type of work environment where staying home was frowned upon, but hopefully that’s changed.

I got into an argument with a coworker years ago about coming into work sick. He refused to use his sick time because you didn’t get commission relief calling in sick. I told him I have an auto immune disorder and him coming into work was disrespectful. He got so made he turned red and told me he doesn’t care and his family comes first. He got fired for trying to punch a hole in a cement wall shortly after.

My daughter has been home from school the last few days with enough symptoms to pull out a Covid home test to check on it. Thankfully negative so we're dealing with what looks like a mild flu, but I've been planning in my mind how we were going to have to possibly isolate through next week. 😬 She's already spending her birthday 🎂 today on the couch again, doing homework and studying for upcoming mid-terms between naps. 😕 Since she's back in-person this school year we've got the whole passed-around illness thing to deal with even though she masks, so I've been watching out for the slightest of symptoms like an overly-alerted bloodhound. 🙁

I've always tried to work from home when I'm sick, but I was feeling terrible in February/March 2020 (pre-shutdown) and went into the office, only to be sent directly home by my boss. I know that's not the norm for everyone, but I hope that this becomes more acceptable as we get out of the actual pandemic stuff.

At one point in my life I was missing a lot of work due to an undiagnosed mental illness. I was getting my work done but I had a high absenteeism rate. My supervisor sat me down to let me know that my absenteeism was not acceptable. She proudly told me that she even came into work once when she was so sick that she ended up being taken out by ambulance. And she thought that was a good thing, something to be proud of. And I didn't miss so much work that I ran out of sick days so I wasn't missing that much work. I'd be quite happy if people stopped going into work sick. Unfortunately, for some people that isn't an option.

So in 2014 I was working in a long term care facility. I was REQUIRED to be at work no matter what even SICK%, it didn’t matter to the nursing staff if you were towing your own hearse. They just wanted shifts covered by any means. One morning I had a fever and body aches, the works. But I went to work because we were not allowed to call in without giving a few days notice, the process is jacked! And it was beyond obvious that something was wrong with me. At the morning brief, I was doing my best to just stand up right and to breath normally. I showed the head nurse my hand and she took my temp. She ended up sending me to the ER after about an hour of debating who was going to cover for me. But I had to make that drive (45 min to work both ways….) and clock in and “prove” to them I was sick. They wouldn’t take it from me over the phone, I mean I did try to call in. But I was told show up or be fired. And this was my first job out of school. I had been bitten by a brown recluse unknowingly a few days before and while caring for a patient the previous day he had grabbed the bite area; that was by then filled with puss and popped the blister it had formed. I had at that moment become violently ill , as the poison spread systemically through my body. But I finished my shift first, and went home to die, basically. Then I Got up the next morning and could hardly move my hand or my arm. So I tried to call in sick, they said “no way”. The next time this happened I was a lot more wise to the game. It was two years later, and I had the previous day off anyway. I was feeling sick that whole day too. Woke up the next morning at 4am to go to work and knew instantly that I had the flu! 102.9 grade fever body aches chills vomiting! I didn’t need a diagnosis. I called work and the office manager read me my rights over the phone, and told me I had better show up. I was working home health at this time. And I cared for very vulnerable patients in their home setting. I knew I had the flu and could very well end up “killing” a patient if they got exposed to my germs. I told the woman to kick rocks in a very nice bless your heart way. I then called up the family I was supposed to be caring for their dad that day….told them my situation AND that The agency still wanted me to go in sick, and expose their loved one. The son in law told me to stay home! I got a Teladoc visit because I was not going into a doctor office and expose more people, and got the doctor note my job demanded I get to be able to stay home , and also so I would not be fired. Before COVID, Doctor’s notes were GOLD! This was in 2017. But before these two times in my life, I had also been that warrior and worked sick with whatever I had and exposed all my coworkers and customers too, because it was “expected”. And at the time I didn’t have the same training and knowledge that I did after nursing school. Now if my husband is sick, he gets quarantined to the bed room. I was doing quarantine long before it was popular.

Yet I think it needs to somewhat be up to the individual too. After a day or two of the worst of a cold, even though my cough or runny nose still gradually lingers, I want to get back to normal and would hate being told to stay home all the time. We can't hide from germs and contain them from other either. Don't tough it out just to tough it out, but once you feel better, I don't see what's wrong with getting back to things even if the cough or sniffle still persists.
