I love my mother-in-law... she was raised on a farm in Lebanon and did not go to school so she does not read (and does not speak English except for a few words), but she is very observant and has her own wisdom... She loves me, and even has sided with me at times against her son... So she has been like the best person to teach me how to pick the best eggplant (the smaller ones are sweeter) and okra, for example, but because she is not educated, she sometimes comes out with real gems that show her innocence... like she believes when it rains, it is also raining on the moon. Amazingly we manage to communicate in a combination of Arabic, English and lots of hand signals, and we can make each other laugh. And she is one incredible cook... she even learned how to cook gluten-free and dairy-free for me. Now if that is not love, I don't know what is. :)

My MIL is so sweet! Her quirk that gets me though is telling me family news in a whisper like it’s the juiciest piece of gossip anyone has ever had. She side-eyes the room, leans and then will whisper that my niece is doing so well in school. She’ll then turn around and not even inform us of an uncle’s surgery until a week after it’s over! 🤷🏻

In my family, it’s the opposite. Grandma, mom, dad, and aunt all call me to tell my grandpa is getting bunion surgery on the 27th. They will all call me the day after the surgery to tell me how it went, and Grandma will usually include so TMI details about the catheter and changing the dressings. Then I get a call after the follow-up appointment. I try to tell myself it is a network of love and concern. But there are only so many times I can act worried for my grandpa’s foot surgery. 😂

On one of my Mother in-laws visits it took her at least 15 minutes to tell us how she avoided hitting a deer. The story started with the reason for her road trip and who she was going to visit along with a theatrical play of how she handled the drivers wheel while missing the deer.😂

My husband made fun of me only last night, about the fact that many of my stories wind for a good few minutes before coming to anything remotely close to a point. I’ve tried explaining, I get it from my mom! She never tells me anything about the neighbours without their back story (where they live in the village, who they are related to, if one of their family recently died, how I might remember them from years ago, like because their oldest daughter babysat us when I was about 3). 😂

OMG, at the girl talk after clearing the Thanksgiving table, I found myself playing my late mother's role in telling our family's funniest stories, about personal quirks, cooking, family vacations & visits, motherhood, mission trips, etc. At the time it felt important to remind my generation and inform the next ones down of how much fun we've had together, lift everybody up from the present reality, and give the younger generations some perspective that their elders are human and absolutely hilarious! And that it's important to be able to laugh at yourself and life.

I laughed so hard when our youngest son once parodied me telling a story. He started with "This is the story - 'I went to the store and bought groceries. I bumped into your friend Steve. He said to say hi.'" Then he switched over to his version of a mom voice and continued. "Here's how you tell the story - 'So our friends are coming over for dinner next week, Tuesday night, because that's Dave's night off from the fire station, and I've got book club on Wednesday and so anyway, I needed to get some vegetables and dip, I'm thinking of serving pasta - I would have walked to the store but then, y'know, the groceries. Oh, did you know they started building that new warehouse on River Road? I passed it while.......'. " And it went on and on and on for like five minutes.

I never got along very well with my in-laws, unfortunately. However, when my son was about to be married, I decided to have a conversation with my daughter-in-law. I told her that I was honoured to be her mother-in-law and I respected that she was now the most important person in my son's life. She was surprised and pleased. We have a great relationship, and I get the fun of spoiling my only grandchild!

We just spent two weeks at my son and daughter-in-law’s , the part of this skit about the remote was spot on. All my husband wanted to do was watch some news and he never could figure out how to do that. And I cooked most of the time. We feel very blessed to have a great daughter-in-law.

My Mum used to pack her yellow rubber gloves in her suitcase when she came to see us. Just in case. =D. One time I was scrubbing something in the sink and she was right behind me....really close behind me....chin on my shoulder, watching what I was doing. Both my in-laws have very intense OCD. When our oldest was born MIL came to stay for week, supposedly to help out. She barely interacted with the her first grandson. Instead she emptied the closets and rewashed ALL of our clothes, sheets, towels, and blankets. So after reorganizing the contents all the closets, cabinets, and dressers, she started rearranging furniture and decor, moving things to different rooms, and even rehanging all our photos and artwork. It made me sad that even happy events caused her so much distress that she defaulted to hyper-organization mode. Through that experience I gained so much more compassion for people with OCD, perfectionism, anxiety, etc..

This makes me sad, especially because I literally just had my first visit with my new grandson. I felt like I couldn’t take my eyes off him, even when he was sleeping or someone else was holding him. Such a precious moment in time.

Wow. That's amazing that you came out of that experience with compassion and empathy versus anger and disconnection and a damaged relationship. I would say "help" is defined by the person/s being or needing help. It shouldn't be defined by the "helper" as that is often not help. This is a sad story. I hope they have some kind of professional and or medical assistance.

In her own way I suspect that she thought that she was being helpful by giving you a clean, orderly environment and allowing you and your husband to bond with the baby. I am glad that you were able to have compassion and understanding towards her and I hope that she has been able to be a loving grandma to your son.

For a long time, whenever my mom visited she wouldn't know where things went, esp in kitchen but instead of asking or leaving for us like I told her she can do, she would try to put it away anyways. My 70-something father-in-law has a PhD in physics. He thinks this makes him an expert on, well, basically everything. He is endlessly dadsplaining things to us that we know more about than him. My mom will start telling me a story about some person I met when I was in high school and always says "Remember Mrs. Smith down the street...", and when I say I don't remember she always says..."...you remember the one with that bird bath in the front yard..."....no, mom, I don't remember...."remember she had that dog..."....geez, is any of this relevant to the story...."No, I just wanted you to know that she moved."....um, ok. Now I just say "yes, I remember Mrs. Smith". Cuts the storytime in half!

The was us this thanksgiving. Not with our parents, but we were those parents. I noticed when I started a story somehow it would get interrupted and then no one would ever say “and you were saying”. The story just died. So, I got the hint. Fortunately my grandkids are at they age where they want to hear our stories and ask they ask us lots of questions about when we were “young”.

You might want to think about that. The kids might just be trying to be polite. Or maybe they wish the talking would stop but they don't know how to politely but effectively extricate themselves or shut it down. Or, if you give good gifts or money, they might only be pacifying you so you just keep doing that. Seems to me kids want to feel heard, listened to and understood more than talked at and listen to someone else's "stories" that have no relevance to them. And stories they may have heard at least more than once if not maybe a million times. And it's no fun being held hostage by overly talkative relatives either. We have one of those in my family and she's oblivious to everyone's discomfort as she repeatedly and relentlessly holds people hostage with her "conversation". It's completely one sided, talking "at" others and has on occasion lasted hours before people could get away and escape without upsetting her. Sometimes she'll even follow people wherever they go to escape including the bathroom. And she never ever takes or sees a hint.

Like you, we both love each other's families, mostly because they all live 3000 miles away. My parents visit Christmas through New Years every year. Now Mom has a reputation for being a bit of a worrier. One year we're throwing a NYE party at our house and my wife cannot stand how much my mom is stressing about every little thing we we're setting up, cooking, etc. So my wife opens a bottle of wine and pours my mother a glass. Every time my mom turns around, my wife tops her off. Mom is feeling no pain by 9:00 and the next day cannot figure out why she has such a hangover after drinking only one glass of wine.

No inlaws and no parents. My grandparents were great though! They liked to chit chat with everybody about what was going on in town, their hobbies (art, square dancing, gardening in minor detail and did not talk about health issues at all. I miss 'em!

Our parents sadly have passed away years ago, I dont say this to be a bringdown, rather, I want to say, if you are fortunate to still have your parents, enjoy every moment, (especially the holidays) no matter what little quirks they may have, because when they are gone, you will look back and know, that it was truly the best of times!! Just watching this video and loved it 😊 I am also blessed with unbelievably fabulous in-laws. My husband and I are both active duty so they have helped with moves and deployments…amazing. But I think the observation I have is with how we’ve become more casual with our visits now compared with when we were first married and before kids. We used to do these big, elaborate breakfasts and dinners and now we all just order takeout 😋 We used to clean the house like crazy and now we just make sure the guest room is acceptable and the rest of the house isn’t a complete war zone 😊 so it’s been neat to see how our family visits have changed over our marriage 😊 I am also one who loves hearing stories about earlier times so ditto for the other comment that said keep sharing the stories 😊 great video 😊

My mother-in-law is amazing and my husband gets along great with my mother. They don't really have to visit they each leave a few streets away from us in opposite directions and help watch our daughter when we are at work..I love that my daughter gets quality time with her grandmas who spoil her rotten but that is what grandmas are supposed to do. Best piece of advice my mother ever gave me was make sure you like the family of whoever you marry because they become your family too....and I got an amazing bonus family....but she is right when picking the person you are going to marry make sure you like the family to..you do not want to deal with the stress of people you can't stand and it is not at all fair to put your spouse in a position to have to take sides.

I love my in laws!!!! I honestly can’t say anything bad about any of them. They are all close to us and we love living near them. I joke with my husband saying I really married him for his family and his dad’s bbq 😂

@@rnptenafly I'm not saying the negativity isn't genuine, thats the sad part. I'm just glad to also actually see genuine *people* who actually care about others and don't mind their quirkiness. I'm also not saying some relationships are just hard. But these days, too many can't be bothered to have meaningful conversation with their in-laws because their stories last longer than 8 seconds. Everyone would rather be on social media, playing video games, etc.

My parents (RIP) were perfect - and wonderful g-parents to our kids. Seriously. And my MIL (93 and still adorable) is the best. I hit the jackpot. I love their stories. But . . . they (parents) *ARE* hilarious without trying -- just being their natural selves. This is a great video. Keep up the good work.

No family close enough to visit, so I usually end up doing holidays with my best friend (from high school) and his wife. High school was over 50 years ago. Even though his wife had no connection to our high school days, she has heard the same ol' stories so much that she corrects us when we screw up past recollections!! 😂

It was my husband's grandparents who talked like that. I remember only hearing about people's medical issues. She named her neighbors by their ailments. My grandparents were awesome. I'm the oldest grandchild on both sides. Now that I'm the oldest living person in our family, I have all of the geneology knowledge. I'm 60.

Sound like you have lobkey in laws that just want to help you guys out but are stuck with all the new things and are pretty much helpless in your household lol. The "I'll cook" part had me though. That's exactly my mother in law. She comes over and wants to cook for us so I can hab a little rest, but she always asks me a million questions and I keep running. Back and forth between the kitchen and my kids. Super stressful... I would rather cook alone in peace and have her watch the kids for a minute so i can get a break lol. Cooking is not the hard part about motherhood. It's the kids. Those are what I need a break from lol 😅
