Rub charcoal or soot on the reel will take a lot of the silver glare away. If it's actual steel, an old bottle of Hoppes Blue

Thanks for reminding me about the line. I have had three of them for twenty years. Probably time for me to change the line anyway. You could use a black marker on the metal to take away the shine.

Hey Blackie, Very informative video. Instead of bank line , I replaced the line with 1/16 wire rope 304 stainless steel wire cable with a load bearing of 368 lbs. with a loop formed on the end to attach steel fishing leaders for hooks/ or #36 bank line for for noose. Some of my rigs are 50 yoa and are still working fine. If you engrave your information onto the backside of the reel and check your lines every morning (for night use) and withe in sight (for day use) you should be legal in all fifty states. Keep the videos coming, they are great.

Absolutely loved this! I have used all these tricks to moderate success here in my beloved Ohio woodlands. Growing up in the 60's and 70's every kid had a yo-yo. You learned a few tricks to impress friends but then you realized that these tricks can be used out in the woods. Did you know that the yo-yo was also a weapon? Also useful in hunting small game. Did not depend on a fixed axle, but slinging the weight dead on. Traditional yo-yos can weren't fixed. And you launch a projectile a fair bit. And yy's made very little sound. Archery has range. Fire arms greater range and stopping power. But when I want stealth i have an yoyoand some bolos

A couple black steel leaders to go in the kit would hopefully save the cordage from being chewed by furry critters or toothy fish .. blackening them up is a good idea .. for extra quick traps or alarms some victor rat traps are a viable option .. can be used for catching fish in a survival situation too .. ONlY in a true survival situation !

Good stuff, I like the idea of the swivel clip on the end of the line, if paired with a nice fishing leader maybe it could add to the usefulness and save some cordage. Just want to make sure the swivel isn't the weakest point.

I used to have a box of the American made ones until someone broke into my wife’s car and stole them along with other items. They are handy to have and hopefully I will get some replacements soon. I like the idea of changing out the line and will have to do that on mine.

Darkening it up - black permanent marker is your friend, and allows quick touch ups...how about some wire leader, to avoid bite-through? Just a swivel on the line to clip into....

Hey Blackie- thats neat and has many uses as you mentioned. I bet there are many ways to rig this and looks like it does not take up any space at all. Instead of a trout line, use a yo-yo line. Thanks for the video and good info. Always look forward to your videos- Be safe out there-

Good Idea but where do you find the Reel in the video. They make a Large Tip Sharpie that would probably work to Color the Reel, I've seen the Sharpie at a local Office Supply Store or maybe at a Walmart.

I am a long haul trucker. @Blackie Thomas. Who is in very good shape, both physically and mentally. My survival situation can be walking 500 miles to get back to my family. I would love any thoughts or ideas on ways that I can improve a long range get home bag…. This question is not directed specifically to Blackie. I am absolutely all ears.

I’ve already been building. My bag by mimicking Appalachian thru hikers ultralight type equipment. However, what I have been discovering is that they do not look at their situation as survival situations it’s camping from spot to spot on a long range hike that they expect to be able to re-outfit at place to place

Depending on if you use set routes while making deliveries .. if so . Your own restock ( Survival Caches placed by you will be a factor in your success of making such long treks ) depending on if you can adding a bike to your truck sure would make those miles go way faster .. hope these ideas helps

@@kenbarrett6466 unfortunately I don’t so I can’t cache supplies. The bicycle is something I am looking at however what I’m thinking is that it’s going to have to be something that can be folded in half.

In my days upon the road, you kept a good sized mailing box for your stuff. A lesson from what happened to CF back in the day. You also kept a personal bag that was going with you. There is your get home bag. The idea was hitching rides, airplane, renting a car or the old Nike Express. In a serious SHTF, there will be options here and there including dropping the trailer and bob tailing as long as you can.
