The rumor is, while smothering the tick as you describe will cause it to release, it may regurgitate a large dose of its infectious saliva into the bite as a going away present. Same theory applies to burning the tick off. Thus the advice to remove the tick whole. I’ve found a tick twister works very well to remove a tick intact.

Well, I would say the Vicks/petroleum jelly smothering method might have risks that aren’t immediately apparent. Maybe best to wait until you’re out of the woods and/or have your intimate partner twist the tick out of a hard to reach place. And personally, after any tick bite, I’d talk to my doctor about getting on a course of antibiotics, just to be safe.

Another video with great advice. Vick's Vapor Rub is also a great first aid product for bee stings. I am not sure about wasps, but it would be worth a try, When I was a kid I got a bee sting on the arch of my foot. Our baby sitter suggested using Vick's along with a bandage overnight, so, Mom decided to give it a try. When the Vick's and bandage went on the foot was swollen and pretty painful. By bedtime I could tell the swelling had gone down and the pain was dropping off. The next morning there was no pain and the swelling was totally gone. I bet there are even more uses for this product. Cheers!

Don't spray your Blackbird haversack with Permethrin! Spray your pants from the knees down 360 degrees. Spray your hat all around the outside and underneath the brim. I also spray my front floor mats. Often times, you will get back in your vehicle and a tick will fall on your floor mats. They can be there days later and crawl up your leg. Also, make sure you spray your footwear. Lastly, when you pull an embedded tick out of you, pull SLOW and STEADY. Is you tug quick and the tick's head comes off it "vomits" in you, and you're chance of getting sick goes up!

I can attest to the use of vick's vapor rub, it works great to get the ticks off! Permetherin should be used by everyone going outdoors, just be careful with some of the hi-tech nylon materials, it may damage it! I wear gaiters sprayed down with permetherin and it helps alot.

The consequences this time were dramatic, facial paralysis, meningitis. 😨 She is relatively well today, but now also has heart problems, all because of this little creep's poison. So, protect yourselves! 👍

Took me back to my wandering days in my Missouri Bootheel! Deer ticks, chiggers, hornets, blue racers, copperhead, water moccasins, egg sucking blacksnakes, and hillbillies like me! In many ways, it was the good life fir sure. We depended on Vicks VaporRub, Musterole, flaxseed tea, salves and poultice. A little dandelion wine never hurt either! Nice to hear you mention it. BTW, Luke of Outdoor Gear Review also recommended Permethrin for tents, groundcloths, etc. Claims it would kill spiders as soon as they touch it.

Hey Blackie, I am lucky. Hunting in the New Zealand bush we don’t have ticks, spiders, snakes or malaria. We do have nasty little sand flies and mossies in some places though. When I was in the army serving in the tropics we had to be real careful with malaria. Mosquitoes can be killers! We had to be careful for centerpedes and scorpions too. The snakes got out of our way. But Mosquitoes were the big killers. Good advice on the Vicks. Like your video Brother. 🇺🇸 🇳🇿

Hi Blackie, I got Lyme disease at a Boy Scout summer camp. The symptoms don’t usually appear till about 1 months after the tick bite. You get flue like symptoms and very fatigued. My jaw bone was killing me. I couldn’t even chew a hotdog. After a couple weeks of this I went to my doctor and told him that I thought I had Lyme disease. At first he didn’t believe me, I live in near Chicago and they must not get many case. The only way to convince the the doctor that I might have got Lyme disease was to stress that the area that I had camp was known to have disease. I don’t he he really took me serious until after the blood test . Lucky I caught the disease early. Lyme disease get misdiagnosed a lot. It took about 2 years to get back to normal. The flue like symptoms were gone but the the fatigue linger down for a while

Permethrin does not repel ticks and spiders. It kills them. It does provide some repulsion of flying insects. Contact with permethrin treated clothes and gear causes an attack on the insects nervous system. I have been fortunate not to have been bitten by any ticks since I was in my early teens, I am now in my 70's. I have found them crawling on me and clothes, if I failed to treat them beforehand. I once picked eight or ten off a fishing vest I had just removed.

There's Lymes disease in the UK, I can't use Vicks but the mozzys aren't the biggest here (I've been to the Yukon) and I've gotten rid of them with peppermint oil. I wonder if that will work with ticks? Wouldn't recommend peppermint oil for folks in bear country, maybe too close to a food like smell. Another thing I've heard with the mozzys, ticks ect besides taking Vit B is they prefer folks who eat lots of sugar. Might be an urban myth but might be true too.

Blackie, permethrin is NOT a repellant. It is an insecticide that binds with cloth fibers and will kill any tick that comes in contact with it. I mix a gallon sprayer with about 7 oz. of 10% permethrin every spring and spray down all my outdoor clothes front and back and let them dry out in the yard. I've maybe had 1 tick on me in the past 3 years, and that's with a job that has me in the woods several times a week as well as all my outdoor hobbies.

Avon Skin-So-Soft will keep ticks and chiggers off. I have picked blackberries and not gotten chigger bites. I had to COMPLETEly cover ALL skin, especially where chiggers like to bite. The bad thing is blackberry picking season in really hot and humid where I live, causing me to sweat heavily. So I have to reapply occasionally, Also, you have to wash it off your hands, or it will transfer to the berries. It tastes awful; don't ask me how I know.
