It can be done given enough resources to schools (not squandered by provincial departments and teachers unions as had been the case for decades ) and where the initial Afrikaans courses aren't sacrificed financially (as someone who is South African but doesn't speak Afrikaans it's an argument which I have heard especially in light of Stellies and NWU alledged cutting of Afrikaans courses with their wider introduction of English). Bear in mind we are possibly on the verge of losing 2,4k teachers in the Western Cape and 11k in KZN and many more in other provinces (that have not yet given a number but suffer similar constraints) so finances is not a small concern. In addition the number of single medium Afrikaans public schools isnt large so it wont provide a miracle solution to our overcrowded schools I believe some politicians might hope it would (max 1,2k schools out of possibly 24k+ schools - I stand to be corrected if someone has better figures). Lastly I think SMWX needs to add nuance on the ease of which it is to prove a school is unfairly discriminating (especially on racial lines) when having language requirements for Afrikaans. Unlike Sizwe I think clearer criteria is pertinent given the risk for quick antagonisation and misreading of intent of the school. Lastly I would appreciate going further on the previous cases and detailing further the rationale found for discrimination. It would help jn having a more detailed discussion on it

SMWX, I grew up on a forestry estate about 40km from the nearest town. Only one African child of my age, matriculated, the son of Chief Nyoni Zuma, who sent him to boarding school. The other African children had to walk about 15km to the nearest 'Bantu" school, which school ran on a platoon system to accommodate all the pupils, who studied to Grade 3 and then started working on the farms. There were very good Mission schools which the government took over. The Verwoerd education system was discriminatory and racist. My observation in Tshwane English schools, is that many whites have sent their children to private schools, and the Taxis' bring the black children from the Townships. At least the African children are in properly equipped schools with good teachers. In 30 years there has been an improvement for black children. Thanks for the case law. Proceed with BELA and keep moving towards equality. There are a lot of administrators in the GDE who can implement the new system.

It's no longer the school governing body who makes the final rule on everything, including admissions. Which they noticed that was still creating segregation in some of the schools. And many other rules that were in favor of equality for everyone involved. It still doesn't change my mind tho that the DA is up to something with bringing more Europeans to SA, and if you check here on yt, they have recorded a huge number of white south africans returning back to SA permanently. All that this act will achieve is to make the middle class parents of every hue who are bankrolling the few functional government schools that are left walk away and put their kids (and their money) into a private school. In typical ANC fashion they are treating the symptom and not the problem. The fact that most english medium government schools in the suburbs are populated with kids who are commuting in by taxi from many kilometers away is a direct consequence of the fact that this government has failed - in over 30 years mind you - to build and staff decent schools in the areas where their voters actually reside! Fix the problem not the symptom! But that would mean actually getting off their backsides and making some decisions instead of sitting around making obscene fortunes out of the gatekeeping game...

The current lack of protection for teachers in classrooms is a concern. While I recognise the importance of children attending school and the accountability of parents, sending parents to jail may be too extreme. Additionally, the school curriculum in South Africa is not up to international standards, resulting in many students requiring bridging courses at universities to catch up. It seems that some schools and universities have been passing students based on a curve, required numbers, or due to intimidation from student strikes. This issue needs to be addressed as it affects students genuinely striving to succeed without involvement in school-going wannabe politicians. What discipline is allowed, and what happens when there is intimidation towards school staff.

My colleagues who work in education are far more concerned about other aspects of the bill. For example, it still does not fulfill parents’ constitutional right to decide which education is best for their child. The bill only supports the state mandated curriculum which does not work for all children or families.

You CANNOT put a Xhosa child who cannot understand English in grade R in an English school. Ignore uneducated politicians, take a logical, pragmatic view of reality! Children should be educated in their mother tongue! Upgrade Bantu schools into boarding schools. Excellent nutrition, teachers, strict routines, supervised homework, decent facilities and discipline. Too many children are cared for by illiterate grandparents, there are too many street children and child-headed households. Changing Afrikaans schools to English schools will have an inconsequential effect while government doesn't have the insight to address an overwhelming problem properly. Look at youth unemployment! All caused by chaotic, ineffective attention to the importance of education. English can be taught as a second language in these boarding schools.

I am an afrikaans speaking citizen. The problem is not in language but in the culture. We are a nation with different languages and each practice their own culture and ways of learning, teaching and conducting every day school activities. Mixing languages and forcing children through government to share the way that things are done is not practically applicable. It would be in the best interest of each culture/language/race to enjoy education in a way that they are familiar with and being able to get along with their class members. It should not be reminiscent of apartheid but rather embracing each language and culture and allowing these children to grow and be educated in a way that they find easiest.

This doesn't really make sense to me. African kids already go to model c schools and excel. Wat cultural element are you referring to here? The bill wants to insure that different language subjects like setswana hl or sesotho hl are provided in areas were they are spoken.this is about meeting the needs of different south africas to ensure all our kids get to learn their languages as subjects. In township different cultures have been going to school together for generations but there hasn't been any issues. Why would there suddenly be an issue wen this integration happens in model c schools?you would like ur kids to learn Afrikaans as his language of instruction right? Afrikaans people have been successful for many many years because of culture, religion and way of going about business. Wrecking our schools with the Bela act is only a political and ideological intervention. You underestimate the power of the way that children have been brought up in their homes because you don’t understand how afrikaans people do that. That is where our power lies in upbringing, and culture goes along with that. Sec 4 and 5 of Bela act will be catastrophic for our afrikaans schools and is a terrible idea. Just because we’re able to achieve success in our schools doesn’t mean that when you force non-afrikaans speaking children into these schools that the same would happen. On your question about work. You’ve probably forgotten about black economic empowerment and affirmative action. So, no it’s not possible for me in South africa to work in a firm or any job where someone of different culture and race is not also employed.

My kids have performed well at the model school their going to. Wat I'd prefer is them learning setswana as a subject instead of Afrikaans in the suburb the vast majority of the black population speak sepedi /setswana. But the school has consistently refused to added an African language as an option for other kids. To me the bill is about being inclusive of all south africans. If these were private schools. I wouldn't care but their public school and should serve the community not an ethnic group. We can agree to disagree on this topic. I have my views and you have yours. I respect ur opinions.

​@@Tebogo16v the problem I see here, is that nowhere in the BELA does it assure that your Setswana HL child, who attends an English model C school, will be offered a second language class at school in his own mother tongue due to this act becoming law... that is quite outside the purview of the BELA. The only way that will happen is if there are high quality Setswana speaking teachers, which the school feels are qualified to teach at the school... and that was always an option, even before.. it has nothing to do with the BELA (that is, IF the school can find someone they feel is qualified to teach that class... I am told that practically speaking, it's easier to find Afrikaans speaking teachers who can teach at the level a model C school expects... and yes, I get it... that's a whole other issue in terms of why we don't have enough high quality teachers teaching in, say 10, of our other national languages... but that's outside of the BELA's remit). And so, the real issue is that these 2 clauses have been highlighted by everyone as the only concerns when they really are not. They are simply the only 2 clauses that will stir the usual racist outbursts (on both sides) and ensure the usual divide and conquer style of governance that our people get stuck in. It muddies the waters nicely so that no one pays any attention to the real problems there are with the BELA. Problems of state over reach, criminalizing parents, preventing parents (and teachers) from voicing any objections against the state, and many other worrisome matters that could be brought in and forced on us all if one reads all the other laws, policies and procedures that dovetail into this Act, rather than simply taking the BELA Act at face value.

I’m curious how this would be implemented with English medium schools. Obviously, most students will not be English first language speakers, so will we see more schools becoming dual medium (e.g. Zulu and English in KZN)?

Spatial demographics have changed public schools are funded by our taxes they should be open for all reallocation of funding to align to the local demographics that's all might not mean necessarily an increase maybe also DA played their hand way too early sorry for them but the only way out is the only way out something tells me they not willing to let go of Blue lights

I think the difference is that the DA have a moral compass and thought that they were entering a partnership! Getting your own way in a partnership by treating it like a game to be won illustrates a lack of moral fortitude and sense of fair play in the partner doing the playing! Say what you mean and mean what you say! Any other way of navigating one's way through life is frankly disgusting and the way of the snake!

I am pleasantly surprised the objectiveness on this. Where is the state getting the money from if 2500 Western Cape teachers will be without work and how will they implement grade R. Concerning Afrikaans, go to any Afrikaans school in the Urban Areas of the western Cape and you will see that there are a lot of Coloured people at that school too. As early as 1993 ( Friends of mine) were at Afrikaner schools. The government must actually learn from these schools. More schools should be built to help the growing population.

What's important is for the voters to keep watching, keep listening and choose to witness how leadership chooses to abuse their partners.
