"We do things in a way that works for those that count" - Prof Henning. I'm glad she said it out aloud. The law's are never "made for political persons" anyway. If you read the BELA-BILL, you will see that the law amendments are mainly punitive and mainly directed against parents. Not ONE clause even suggests a corrective measure against the government officials or parties or political persons who have a massive impact on the day to day lives of children and their parents.

Under the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA), parents could be jailed for up to 12 months if their children are truant, or if they are not enrolled when they reach school age - this has a severe impact on homeshcoolers. The BELA Bill also introduces a ban on corporal punishment in all schools.

I think South African schools must be taught in English .My reasons are University Or Tertiary English. AND language exclude others..This block kids to be accepted on closer schools to their homes.And if one language at schools used our kids will learn same ..they can be in township or urban area. Language is used to exclude others and is hidden racism .

@bafanamahlatse1923 African language is not an issue problem start when they reach Tertiary No Books.Our kids speak African languages at home.But I believe schools must use only one language.Because No Setswana , zulu at university. This is my reason why I say SA must use only one language at schools until Tertiary. IF there was Zulu etc at Tertiary I was not going to say Nothing.

Very interesting to hear the perspective of Prof Henning. It is worth noting that Hector Peterson died because of objection to Afrikaans and now it feels like it is an effort to ignore the language. Now what will Happen where there is an Afrikaans Medium school and because of the open policy in terms of admission, there is a strong possibility that the parents will demand that Afrikaans gives way to something else because their kids don't understand the language. Sorry, the Afrikaans community has a right to the preservation of their language without compromise. Finally - what about the attempt of the State in education to have "ownership" of the child rather than their parents. I am referring to the whole thorny issue is sex education and the progressives who are actively wanting to blurr the gender boundaries. As a parent I will not tolerate my children being propagandised in this way via tax payer funded educational systems. Having said all this , Prof Henning was a breath of fresh air to listen to.

Why Children Sex Education is ignored in explaining some clauses of this bill - which is the core of the problem why many people are against it. As well as the alcohol which will be sold in the school primisses. This bill has to go back to the parliament to be dealt with

"Just because there's a dispute over a bill?" What a disingenuous statement! There is no dispute over the bill. There are aspects about the suggested legislation that the public and the various sectors in education have contested for the last 10 years. The real problem here is that the bill contains subversive clauses that are very easy to manipulate and misinterpret. Because the Government has specifically ignored and discounted the concerns of various communities, the public did NOT have their fair chance to air their views. The language issue seems to be the "go to" topic here, and it's actually the very least widely contested issue. The only people talking about that matter are the media and their cherry picked guest speakers.

The DISPUTE put up by the DA relate to CONSTITUTIONALITY of the BILL. And one need to address that. The President need to take the views into serious consideration. The DA is on record that if the President, for whatever reason chose to sign, it will not be the end of the GNU. But, the President need to make greater efforts to find its GNU partners.
