Three 44s and a JL on 4168, a V set and double NRs converge on Cowan at the same time in 2005. Lots of Alco smoke and a few exhaust flames from one of the 44s.

Wait a minute. At 2:19 one of the V Set cars appears to be a 1st batch connected to a DJ series. Idk if its normal or something but the video is still legendary.

They may be old and inefficient as mentioned in another comment but they look and sound wonderful. The JL sounds rather ill though.

Looks like the trains were trying to figure out who goes first, the vintage 1s should have gone, not the intercity because of another freight locomotive was doing the right thing, what does anyone think, yes or no!

seems like those alcos needed a breather after ascending cowan bank. 8th notch can be very wearing and hot, as well as great for filming! I also wonder how long that train took to clear the section to Cowan - that bank isn't a short one!

Aging electricals or not, the hotter and longer they run, the better and more efficient the power delivery. The 44 Class were the workhorse of the lot. I've driven or ridden in every one of those engine's. Some of you are such 'spotters' - actually driving or observing is way different than spotting. Sincere regards from Sydney and Ballina. MATE.

@@imacgra1 Yeah, right. Driving and really knowing these engine's was and is all aquired skill. Being philosophical and not learned doesn't change anything, it's all practical, not so much romantic or speculative from where I sat. Do the maths as each load varies, it's 5-miles/8.6km, 200m up from Hawksberry River, I'm sure you know more than I did about load, motive power and just what will and won't pull up that grade? I've driven the lot.

@@christiankirkwood3402 still wondering why you think I'm not entitled to my opinion, train driver or not. Also wondering how you know I haven't driven a 44 up Cowan bank.
@christiankirkwood34022 жыл бұрын
@@imacgra1 When did I say either??? Am I not entitled to my take? You never stated ir implied you drove anything. If you did, you'd have your right to do so. Your comment seemed like that of a spotter. Name names or locations if you want, doesn't matter jack to me old son. Keep spotting. MATE.

The leading loco 4498 is one of the last 44 class built at Goodwins, in around 1967... The first 44's were built in the 50's. So yeh, the newest is nearly 40 years old in this video. And the Candy paint scheme on that loco dates to the early 80's, while the rear looks to possibly be whats left of the old FreightRail blue scheme.

This is a national disgrace, 60 plus year old diesel locomotives on the main line between Sydney & Brisbane. God knows how inefficient they are.

No, it's a national treasure. It depends on how you look at it.

You must be fun at parties. Also, the last 44's were withdrawn from State Rail service in 1997, so this video is clearly over 20 years old. The first was built in 1957, and the last in 1967, so your maths are out by about 20-30 years my friend. And the JL, that was built in the early 70's as a 442, so it's not even 30 years old in this video... It might pay to do a bit of super simple fact checking next time you decide to shake your fist on the internet, lest you make yourself look silly again.

@@pecheur1951 cool story bro... So the video is still 16 years old, which means that these were owned by LVR/IRA/Qube who knows which one at that point? And were about 3 seconds away from being relegated to running trip trains to Botany. The point is, these are currently now sitting around gathering spiders and not going anywhere. The 2nd one has been sitting in the Goulburn sidings rusting away for ages along with 3 or 4 others. Have a nice day, bruh.
