Hello Jesse, I love this video and I always watch it again, and it continues to amaze me, her voice, the corrections, her looks, are incredible, Angelina would also be incredible if she read us a little, a poem, as she does when she sings, she has wonderful interpretive power, she is hypnotic, as if nothing else happened, only Angelina, and that beautiful power and elf is still intact, if you add to all that what a wonderful person she is, that humility and empathy, it makes a perfect combo, Without a doubt, my number one, I would like to thank you for Angelina's reactions, they are the ones I hope for, I wish you the best, greetings from Argentina, and Angelina forever...

Actually this is “Portrait of a Child” which she rewrote to fit herself, she did this when she was rehearsing “I Put a Spell on You”, but as far as I know she has never performed it, which is a shame because it was so fitting for her and her age at the time, it’s kind of too late now because she isn’t a child any more, but it does show how she interacts with the musicians she works with to fit her artistry.

Jesse, I greatly enjoyed your reaction and analysis to this Angelina video. The amount of soul Angelina conveys is off the charts. This one is interesting for the behind the scenes arranging / and managing the band. I do not believe this particular song/project was ever completed to a released video/song beyond this session shared with us. Her performances range from cell phone recorded sessions recorded with a backing track, a single live instrument to whole bands. Most of the ones with full bands end up on an album, etc. In short most of the jamming sessions end up as later full blown performances. You can see this even today where she posts things to TikTok and elsewhere she is working out in her "lab" what she will later do as a full on performance. Maybe she will still revisit this one someday still.

What nine year old child would tackle a complicated song like that? This is what amazes me the most. It’s so fun to have the subtitles so you can actually hear her directing the practice. You also know she changed the lyrics from Portrait of a Man to Portrait of a Child. What child would do that as well? I think her young voice broke, but she turned it into a note (now, that is quick thinking!).
@103mrg2 жыл бұрын
diane In the session we watched, Angelina was clearly in charge. But she wasn't specifically "directing the practice". By that I mean, she didn't say "Let's start over" "Let's make that a tone lower"; she wasn't giving instructions; she presents her wishes by posing them in a question: "Can I start over?" "Shouldn't that be up one tone?" It appears her genius extends to her leadership and diplomatic skills as well. ;-)
@kerrythomas62202 жыл бұрын
@@103mrg yes, she’s definitely smart enough to know that a nine year old shouldn’t be telling adults what to do. Very good upbringing by her family! It’s one of the many reasons why everyone loves her!

In my opinion, this is Screaming Jay's best song. No surprises that Angelina wanted to sing it, even though the words don't quite suit a child ("hair that is turning grey"?) But brave, as we've come to expect. And who would have thought that a 9-year-old could put that kind of power and rawness into the lyrics?

Imagine rubbing a soft makeup brush over a microphone?? Since Angelina has produced pleasure to so many maybe some physiology can come into play. Angelina has been born with something in her voice that is almost totally unique. Certain voices and certain sounds have been proven to cause strange effects on people who are somehow sensitive to those sounds or voices. Angelina's voice has a peculiar way of going beyond the normal channels many if not most people process what is going into their ears. Noticed especially in her breathy low range. Directly from the listener's ears to the brain's limbic system which is responsible for behavioral and emotional responses. We almost always get real physical reactions from her voice, and yes sometimes from others as well, however she can keep the goosebumps going song after song and as long as she wants. Sure, we can compare her voice to dozens of others, but none reach directly into us to produce the feelings we get when Angelina performs. This is known as autonomous sensory meridian response, or ASMR, which is associated with a response termed FRISSON. The following clarifies what Angelina's "musical frisson" might produce in many people. It has been shown that musical frisson gives rise to often deep pleasurable experiences. Frisson may be enhanced by the amplitude of the music and the temperature of the environment. Cool listening rooms and cinemas may enhance the experience.

I wish there were a subtitled, stabilized version of this one that wasn't so radically remixed (the original audio didn't need it, IMO). The sound quality really suffers at certain points due to the process used to amplify the vocals over the music. But anyway… Given the way she mixes up the pronouns here (singing "he" at one point, and "she's eyes" instead of "her eyes" [the original was, of course, "his eyes"]), I'm wondering whether she's switching genders "on the fly" here, or if she just accidentally didn't sing the replacement lyrics she wrote on the lyrics sheet. Looks like you haven't done any of the videos from her at-home rehearsal/practice session at 9 years old (almost 10), playing piano and, in two of the three videos, trying to coordinate with a live drummer (unsuccessfully, I might add). The best of them, IMO, is Sam Smith's "Writing's on the Wall" (mercirfully, sans drummer). It can be found on the Angelina Jordan Fanclub Mosarz channel under the title "Angelina Jordan rehearsal singing and playing Writing On The Wall By Sam Smith December/2015". If you can get past all the imperfections (which I assume you will be able to), it's just insanely beatuiful. Too bad she didn't put out a more "polished" version back then (or ever).

To see just how much Angelina exerts over her performances, react to her “At Last” rehearsal where she gets pissed off at the band when she was the ripe old age of 8. She gives the musicians her “stink eye” and hand-on-cocked-hip stance, waving her mother over to intervene because she is not being respected… lol! I believe this is the only video where we see Angelina get visibility mad. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIbClZV7eNSSa8k. She doesn’t like the tempo or the lack of tune. The players are not being serious about the practice. She also rehearsed “My Funny Valentine” for the same benefit, but didn’t perform it. Rumor has it that she was disgusted with the accompaniments. Keep in mind that she has perfect pitch as she demonstrated in her “I’m a Fool” a cappella Norway’s Got Talent performance and a cappella opening for her America’s Got Talent performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody.” You may not have noticed that Angelina is sight-singing the music in “Portrait of a Child.” Have you ever tried sight-singing music? Even if you’re given the pitch, it’s amazingly difficult.
@103mrg2 жыл бұрын
philip How do you know that she was sight-singing the music?
@philipgotthelf6422 жыл бұрын
@103mrg According to AJ lore, she's been reading music since she was 5. In her early studio sessions. You can see she referenced papers on her music stand. In "I Put A Spell On You," the notes she hands to the producer (her wishes) references specific bars where she wants changes. We know she reads music when playing the piano... that's in several practice videos. In "Portrait of a Child," she sings the ending off the music as written, and then she changes it. Check out her rehearsal of "Speak Softly," where she corrects the conductor. She reviews the score and sings the correction... 😆!

@103mrg Look at original Portrait of a Child video at 2:06 as AJ references the music to say the note is wrong. Hesitant at 2:25 when score isn't matching musicians. At 4:10 (the ending) she reads the score and then decided to improvise. She is not referencing the words because she already sang them. She's pointing to the music score. See her video of Speak Softly rehearsal at 3:07 where she references the score and then sight sings the bar in question. The conductor proceeds to pencil in the correction. Notice that the title of the video is "Angelina Jordan corrects the orchestra... lol.
@philipgotthelf6422 жыл бұрын
@103mrg While we can't see her reading the score, in the unedited video she referenced an incorrect note between the score and musicians. At the end she sings the score and then improvised a different ending.
