The sardine factory where this is taking place is now gone. It's been replaced by a shipyard in Belfast within the past 7 years or so. Crazy, for a while the factory was totally abandoned on the waterfront.

Nation’s last sardine cannery closed From World War II through the 1990s, canneries steadily began to close. In 1999, Connors Bros. Ltd. of New Brunswick bought Stinson Seafood canneries in Bath, Belfast, Prospect Harbor and Lubec. Belfast and Lubec closed within a few years, followed by Bath in 2005. Peabody said Connor Bros. and its sister company, Bumble Bee Foods, finished off the industry here. “They bought factories and closed them,” he said. “They wanted a monopoly. Now they have it.” The Stinson closure this week will mark the death of a U.S. industry that has been struggling for decades. It is the end of an era for Maine’s coastal communities.

Someone I worked at this factory in the 90’s. The patches on the fingers is tape to protect them. Our tape, hair nets, aprons and scissors were deducted from our wages. I’d usually go through a roll of tape a day. I remember calculating how much I needed to cut to pay for my supplies and when I’d actually start making money. I quit when I was expecting my first child. I had some health issues but continued working against doctors orders because we needed the money. I finally quit when fish were coming on the belt with maggots on them and we were told to pick them off and can the fish anyway 😮 Wasn’t worth it. I still can’t eat sardines!
