I hope you guys enjoy!
Today, we are addressing the topic of whether or not a Belgian Malinois, Dutch Shepherd, Lackenois, or dog of similar type, is a good choice for an individual or a family.
The Malinois is a medium-to-large breed of dog, sometimes classified as a variety of the Belgian Shepherd dog rather than as a separate breed. The name "Malinois" is derived from Malines, the French name for the breed's Flemish city of origin, Mechelen.
The Belgian Malinois breed is used as a working dog for tasks including detection of odors such as explosives, accelerants (for arson investigation), and narcotics; tracking humans for suspect apprehension in police work; and search and rescue missions. The U.S. Secret Service uses Belgian Malinois to guard the grounds of the White House.
I hope you guys enjoy!
This channel is devoted to providing a window into the life of professional dog trainer, Stonnie Dennis. I talk about dog training, boarding, health, equipment, and all the things that go into owning and running a successful dog training and boarding kennel.

I got a mal at the pound thinking It was a German Shepard, I needed a dog I could train for service work… immediately I noticed how well my dog listened and other traits a German Shepard didn’t have… eventually I found out my dog is a working line mal, she’s been amazing for me and I’ve been amazing for her, I’ve learned a lot about these breeds. She gets to go everywhere with me, she’s like my child at this point

So glad you got a good one! I got one from a rescue that I was told was a malnourished GSD, LOL. I started to think this wasn't the case when she broke free from her lead ( actually broke the leather belt fail safe ) and ran up a tree after a cat ! I spent 14.5 months training her. She had many bad habits, fighting the vacuum, lawn mower, cars, jumping up for food, to go out.. pulling like a freight train.. Basically a wild animal. She learned to behave, but always had a short fuse. She gave me a few serious bites. I tried so hard to "fix" her. Everyone, trainers, my kids, her vet. Neighbors, ... thought she might kill me some day. These dogs are not pets.

I mean… German shepherds are too much for most people! If they’ve never had a GSD and they go straight to a Mal… stupid. Same for Border Collies. They became trendy because of YT videos and now all these slobs go out and get them and don’t meet their needs and end up with behavioral problems.

Probably the #1 best "Do you want a malinois" video that I've seen!! I do have a malinois and I worked very closely with my breeder to ensure that my pup was exactly what I needed for the job I'm giving him. (wheelchair assistance, mobility assistance and medical response service dog) We worked closely with me detailing the tasks that I needed, the size I was looking for, and with my breeder having trained guide dogs for 10 years he also knew exactly the temperament I needed for public access. We went through multiple litters before the perfect one was born. But let me tell you, he sure loves having a job to do every day! I did years of research on the breed before I picked it. All I can hope is that more people do the same, because it truly isn't the breed for everyone. My boy gets an hour walk in the morning, works through the day at home, works & does public access 2-4 hous per day outside the home, gets an hour walk at night and three times per week i talk him to the dog park for two hours per visit after dinner. There's a saying "the happiest malinois is a tired malinois" and I couldn't agree more.

@@dogsportstuff8497 I just like to hear people's reasons for choosing the breeds they choose. This one is particularly interesting, because a service dog is required to be calm and friendly in the presence of unknown people, who may or may not harass (attempt to pet) them. That's not exactly a Mal's strong suit, so why would someone choose to go through the extra trouble of training a Malinois for this, when they can just pick a dog that behaves calmly by nature? Also, Malinois are hyper, and service dogs are often required to lie still next to their owners for hours (or even days, if the owner has to go to hospital or something!) at a time.
@animalobsessed1
@animalobsessed1 4 жыл бұрын
@@dogsportstuff8497 Why do you feel insulted by the truth? Yes, I have met some, and I do know a few things about them. Are you really claiming that Malinois are an "extremely calm" breed? Malinois are notorious for play biting, and not knowing when to stop. To add to that, they are prone to being overprotective (that's literally what guard dog breeds are bred for). Only training will help them differentiate what is, and isn't, a threat. Your dog may be calm, but if he behaves that way without training, then he's just not a typical example of the breed. If he's that way because you TRAINED him, then you must know how much effort it is to train. My question was what would make someone want to put in that effort, when they can just get a more relaxed dog from the start. Nowhere did I say they're a bad breed; they're the best at doing the things they were bred for, but they AREN'T the best at things they WEREN'T bred for. It's pretty simple logic.

Simba The Malinois who actually uses a Malinois for herding anymore? At one time, that may have been the purpose of the breed, but while the name “Belgian Shepherd” might have stayed the same, the breed’s actual purpose hasn’t. Why don’t you go ahead and tell the police and military that they’re using the wrong breed. Apparently Malinois are only bred for herding! 😂 Now that’s the real joke right there. Almost as funny as claiming English Bulldogs are fighting dogs (ya kno, those wrinkles are there so that the blood won’t flow into their eyes 👍). Breeds exist for a reason. While all working dogs need to be trained for their job, it’s much easier to train dogs for the jobs that suit their genetics. Even Labs and Goldens need to learn to be chill in service dog work, but it’s much easier. Do you understand? I’ve been asking why someone wants to do the EXTRA work. Keyword being EXTRA. As in, any dog needs to be trained, but some will learn within 100 hours, while others will take 1000 hours just to get to the same level. Yes, we all know Mals are smart, but intelligence isn’t the be all end all. Border Collies are smart too, but you don’t see them being used for police work or service work. Because a breed that’s prone to overreacting, *no matter how smart,* will just have a much harder time in potentially overwhelming situations.

Terrence Green that’s how it was with my Alaskan Malamute. She was by my side 24/7! High drive, energy, will to work. She was NOT a family dog, she WAS a working dog. She got bored with the basics so I kept trying new things to keep her happy. In the end she did stuff like cop dogs... clear and search buildings, search and rescue, narcotic search, she even did some service dog work with me after a terrible motorcycle crash, but the one thing she did not do was handle small children and small dogs including puppies well. She snapped a few times at some small kids including mine. At some point I couldn’t keep her anymore because it was a safety issue and our living environment shrunk(from house to tiny apartment) I will never own one again but while I had her she was the best dog I could ask for. She would anticipate what I wanted and would do it without being told. My pic is of her, she was 3 yrs then. I just want to share this because she is far from a Belgian Mal or anything of the sort but also very similar. She was not your average Alaskan malamute though. Thank you.

I love my malinois and she is crazy about me and only me. This breed is definitely challenging. High alert - barks at everything. Very fast recharge rate for sure. She stares at me all the time as if to say, “ok, what’s next Mom?” Social situations are challenging. No issues until someone makes a sudden move or simply looks her in the eyes. Protection switch activates! Blessed that she’s not a biter (but she is loud!) Not a random/reactionary biter anyway. She does give “nips” from time to time...but they’re gentle. So much personality and athleticism. She never ceases to amaze me with what she can do. She is a toy destroyer, but does not destroy anything that isn’t given to her to play with (leaves my stuff alone). Challenges: finding a place to board them. You have to find someone savvy with Mals so that they aren’t misunderstood and are properly cared for/exercised/instructed. Mine likes her big bro, but is uncomfortable with other (unknown) dogs. Bottom line...they’re a ton of work, but if you’re consistent and invest time, they will amaze you with their capabilities and make you feel like you are the most important thing in their world. The loyalty and adoration is unmatched. And mine is a total snuggle bug. She has to be in contact with me at all times when resting. That contact also lets her know when I’m on the move again so she can go wherever I’m going! She does not like to miss out on a thing. I will say, it was recently discovered that I cannot be in the room when she needs something done at the vet. She will alert bark incessantly at everyone. I step out of the room, and leave her brother in the room with her so that she isn’t so overwhelmed, and she does just fine during vaccinations and such. I can vouch that she is a very rough player. Her rescue dog big bro is so easy going, that he takes whatever she dishes out. She’s never hurt him however. She sounds vicious though! Definitely NO to dog parks.

Good video, Stonnie. Hearing some of these horror stories has made me appreciate my 3 year old Malinois more. She can play all day, take a 20 minute nap and play for hours more, but she loves people, loves playing with other dogs and is just a sweet girl overall. She's still working through a bit of separation anxiety, but other than that she minds well and challenges me to keep training her. I don't get to exercise her as much as she needs in the long run, but a 1.5 mile run every other day or so and lots of chew toys and tugs keep her occupied. I'd say she's a keeper. Keep putting out quality content!
@famouskate9071
@famouskate9071 Жыл бұрын
Hey, not being mean here, but, you say you know you are not giving her the exercise she needs. May I ask why not? Did you not know their energy level before you got her ?Again, not criticizing you, but I am genuinely baffled that you knowingly don't provide her with what she needs. Running every other day is not sufficient for a Mal. I know, I have one and yes, a person's life has to change to accommodate the needs of this magnificent breed. Few people are willing to do that, therefore, few people should have one. If you can't give an animal what it needs, it is better to get an animal more suitable to your lifestyle. Anything else is not fair to the dog.

Great video because you explain that bloodlines are important. I am from The Netherlands. A lot of Malinois and Dutch Shepherd are sold from here to the US. Usually these are KNPV (police work) trained dogs. These dogs have a Bloodline Registration Number (BRN) and are not FCI purebreds. The purebreds are all right to handle but do display a lot of the characteristics you describe in the video. These dogs need a lot of time and exercise and preferably training (IGP, Agility, Mondio ring, Fly ball etc.). Dogs with a BRN registration are bred for police work. Do not get these dogs as a family pet. Most of them are perfectly friendly dogs. But I have seen quite a few that will snap at you when corrected or just fight you for dominance. So Stonnie is absolutely right. Meet the breeder and ask about the bloodline and demand certificates.

Sounds right to me. I had a super smart, athletic, female that I trained to do many amazing things. She could not be around other people or dogs. Absolutely hated my son in law and son. I have no doubt she would have killed any small animal she got a hold of. Once in a while she would lash out ( attack) me for telling her what to do.... unfortunately she could never be trusted. She was obedient and well trained when I was looking or present. But she Certainly had a mind of her own, sneaky at stealing food AND sometimes willing to fight me to get her way. In spite of all that, she was amazing and fun most of the time. Always happy to play fetch, frisbee, or go find numerous named items....amazing but dangerous

I bought a 14 week old mal pup at the end of July last year from a long time working mal breeder/trainer. When I settled on a breeder and contacted her i asked for a pup who's temperament was about in the middle of the litter, not submissive or over the top protective, also one who didn't make it through the selection process for bite work but who would step up to the plate if necessary . Got that pup and started obedience training the week he came home with me, lots of socialization from the start, people, strange environments, distracting environments, other dogs, i also taught him on week two "no teeth" when we were playing or just hanging out, now instead of taking small pieces of my body he will lick me to death. These mals definitely need a job and due to the training i have put into him, his breeding as a nose dog and his desire to please as well as work independently he and i are both now search and rescue trainees and he loves that work (and i do too). Still doing lots of classroom training but we also do a lot of field training . Other dogs come up to challenge him but he stands his ground without aggression and shows so much confidence they have so far turned and gone away. I am not going to sit here and say he has never had his teeth on me, for the first 4 months I probably went through 6 boxes of band-aids but it was worth every accidental contact with those puppy teeth . One thing i have observed about this breed is that they seem to need to have something in their mouths most of the time and they also seem to be most content when they are carrying things around. I have been watching your vids since before I got my mal and truly appreciate what you are doing for the dog owning community. Thanks.

Don't waste your two three four thousand dollars if you don't have the time again they're not your family dog they Bite. Can be family they can be friends they don't bite hard enough to punch your holes but it can be aggravating. For friends or family when it's a dog holding on to their thigh or their knee elbow hand in their mouth.. and this is not oh it's just a puppy NO it don't stop it keeps up five or six or seven years......

I have a Belgian Malinois and a Hungarian Vizsla. My Vizsla came from a show dog breeder and my Malinois came from Global K9 protection services. I always though my Vizsla was a lot of work because of his high energy and hunting needs. But my Malinois demands a lot of attention, discipline, structure, routine and mental stimulation. She is a service dog/protection dog. She came to me trained but I have to keep up on it and do daily training and not let her get away with anything. If I give her an inch she will take a mile. Also if she is not under a heal command she will chase anything and kill it. I am her 3rd owner. If you aren’t ready to do daily training and keep a routine and command respect and execute discipline, don’t get a Malinois. She gets walked 4 times a day and has free running time in a wooded area by my house everyday. She also goes every where with me. So if you can’t put in the work, don’t get one. She is also trained in bite work.

Ive met very few Malinois breeders that would endorse using a Malinois as a service dog. Practically no one will do a protection work with a service dog. While I'm glad it is working you are an exception. I'd expect it to be a recipe for disaster if not a full time job in itself to have such a dichotomy of training requirements.

@@jfkst1 She was first trained in protection by a well known protection training facility. She went through 3 owners because she was too much work even as a trained dog. I just decided to try and also train her for Panic Disorder/Anxiety service as well. I don’t get to practice her bite work and protection so much because the facility is in another state. But we still practice what we can. Protection to her is a game. She loves it. But when I put her vest on she’s like another dog. Technically a protection dog is not supposed to be a service dog but I’m working with who I rescued. And I wouldn’t change it for the world. I keep the two trainings separate in deprecate environments. So far so good. She means everything to me. She has significantly improved my life.

I got my Mal from the pound when she was 8 weeks old. I had no idea what I had signed up for! Thankfully she wasn’t the first dog I had ever owned. I treat her more like an employee than a companion. Although she’s the most loving dog I’ve ever had. My husband and sons are simply her herd. We say Cookie doesn’t nap or sleep, she recharges. If we don’t stick to her strict eating/sleeping/exercise schedule boy does she let us know! By the way, exercise can last anywhere up to 3 hours before she takes a break. I love her. She’s awesome. But I tell everybody, just like you said, that if they want a companion or family dog then get a Black Lab. Mals are for people who can be with the dog 24/7/365. I work from home so it’s perfect.

Malinois require people that are very calm and never get annoyed otherwise the Mal won't respect them as pack leader. These days too many people have low energy mixed dogs that they call Malinois so people then think they can handle getting one... with 20x drive.

Stonier, excellent video and I totally agree with your advice. The only thing I would add is that owning a Malinois impacts every member of the family, so every one must accept and deal with the good and not so good that comes with ownership. I have had my Mal Zephyr for 9 years and have devoted a good deal of time and money toward being a good owner. I got lucky and have a very good dog. A major part of that luck came from my commitment (along with my wife) to doing what was necessary to properly own my dog. Zephyr is just as devoted to me as I am to him. I give of my time and energy gladly because that was the deal I signed up for. Works great for us, but I would not recommend a Malinois for most people. You are spot on, thanks for the informed common sense.

Great advice, love the way you read through those hilarious emails. I think its also worth saying that there are plenty of dogs that will help protect you, your family, or your property, without being as high drive, high energy, high recharge rate as a Mal or Dutch Shepherd. For one of many examples, there is the dog that I have, a Great Pyrenees, which needs exercise and stimulation but has a very low recharge rate--once you satisfy her with a fun walk or hike, she lays right down and settles in, relaxing and snuggling the rest of the day. She can hike all day with any human and is very athletic and graceful, but she doesn't have the constant need for supervision and she is very chill in the house. She also has very high bite inhibition and is gentle with dogs and people, until there is an actual real threat to her family, which we have seen her take action against instinctively, alert, and protect us like a bear. Pyrenees are very intelligent dogs and go into a completely different mode, from gentle giant to powerful ally and protector when needed, but I've never seen her try to snap at anyone or even chase anyone, and she is always happy to see guests we invite inside. Pyrs are by far not the only good breed for family life and protection, there are so many great dogs for such things out there that can be researched, but I think people default to the Mals because they see police and military videos with them and assume they therefore must be the best dog in every way for their own situation. Not fair to the dog, and naive of the family.

Im going to assume the pups will have similar temperatures. 3 years ago i got a Great Pyrenees. Parents were wonderful! My pup is too. Our first Great Pyrenees is really sweet to us, buy dislikes when family show up to visit. She has never been anybody just hides in our bedroom. With her as a puppy I never did get to meet the parents. My motto now is don’t take a part that you don’t know what the parents are like. I guess we’ll see how this Mal is going to work out. I’m going to take him to puppy training classes at six months to socialize him. Hope I can keep up with the energy :-)

My Belgian Malinois husky mix is batshit crazy and reactive. Yesterday I took him on a hike, he ran all over the place like a mountain goat. That was not enough, so he also went swimming. He was following me on my kayak swimming. Then when I went home, he still wanted to fetch. My siberian husky and GSD where sleeping after all of that. Mine is over protective and reactive. I have struggled to train him and socialize him as a puppy. He started behaving aggressively towards strangers at a young age, 10 weeks. He gets a lot of exercise. I trained him to pull a dog sled and my bicycle. You are so correct about that recharge rate, lol. He took a short nap in the car and was ready to fetch for hours after hiking and swimming. I wish mine was more accepting of other dogs and people he does not know. He is a struggle. He wears a muzzle in public and at the vet. He got better about people, but not strange dogs. Mine is a very powerful dog and he is larger than a standard malinois and husky. Mine has not bitten anyone, because I took the precaution of muzzling him. He is not destructive and does not bite me at least. You can see him pulling my dog sled and other things in my video. IDK if I would get another. Mine was not well bred being from an accidental breeding.

I have an adult Belgian Shepherd mix that I adopted from a local shelter. He had dog aggression issues, and I was bitten hard by him from his pent-up frustration. I called an Animal Behaviorist to get to the root of the problem. This incident was caused by a highly reactive and spoiled dog that had gone into heat in my household. The roommate finally moved out with his dog, but he along with his dog had caused major collateral damage. For a mix, my dog didn't have high-strung energy, but he was confident, wouldn't back down on a fight, agile, fearless, and protective. His protective herding trait came out at a local dog park. A large Neapolitan Mastiff was eyeing and sniffing this little puppy. My Belgian Shepherd X got close to the puppy and lowered his head and eyed the Mastiff while growling. He is great around children, people, and finally other dogs I had to invest a lot of effort and time to socialize him. He's a wonderful dog and has slowed down considerably from age. Unfortunately, he has arthritis possibly caused by making a few fearless giant leaps from high embankments. However, I would never get a purebred Belgian Malinois because of their extreme energy and drive. Thank you Stonnie for educating people on ownership of the Belgian Malinois breed. We need less of them in animal shelters or being euthanized because of bite incidents.

If you want a Malinois just as a pet then I would not recommend one for you, if you want one to work say for security or protection work then think about one certainly... However be sure to think about it and research properly. High drive dogs can be a nightmare if you are not prepared for the high maintenance. From working bloodlines they are on it 24/7 and if you are not they will take advantage of you and this may become dangerous. Please make sure that a Malinois is required for you.
