Bell Star Helmet Review
www.revzilla.co...
The Bell Star Helmet. If the name sounds familiar, well, it should. The Star helmet has been a staple of the Bell lineup for years. New for 2016, however, the entire batting order is set to change. With the Bell Star, riders will get a super-aggressive helmet that has been built to best perform on the street. With a shorter aerofoil and more relaxed internal orientation when compared to its more race-inspired brothers, the Bell Star helmet is all about every-day riding and comfort. A Tri-Matrix shell keeps the Bell Star lightweight, while the 5 shell sizes allow for a streamlined profile and the X-static XT-2 Silver infused liner keeps the interior plush.

Thanks so much for addressing the specific weight and noise differences between the RS1 and the new "Star". As I stated in the other video review of the new Star family, as a long time RS1 customer, I welcome the alleged noise reduction and the quantified weight reduction. As a frugal guy, I'm a little bummed that the helmet will require a new, and more expensive?, Trasitions shield. The cost of progression? LoL! The benefit to the new design will be a more solid seal at the gasket. I do think that on my RS1 helmets a lot of noise was coming from that area actually, so we shall see about the improvement there. I also think the vent plug is an awesome idea! Plugged when cold for shield venting and out for hot weather when fogging of the shield is not an issue. If it works, this is a nice feature. Cracking the shield slightly in the cold and rain sucks. I'm happy to see a beautiful new RSD design on the regular Star model, and I would just ask if you at Revzilla could please ask Mr. RSD to do a continuation of the "Flash" graphic series? I'm a true sucker for his work! Thanks Again, Ian

Trying to decide between this and the race star when they are released. I haven't gone to the track yet but maybe at some point this summer I'd like to try a track day out. Ride is a ZX-6R. Any suggestions?
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 8 жыл бұрын
+Vissor It really comes down to your budget and whether you want the extra features of the Race Star. The addition of the Race Star's magnetic cheek pads, lighter 3K carbon shell, and VIRUS Cool Jade mesh liner are nice creature comfort upgrades, but the real safety upgrade over the standard Bell Star is the Flex Impact Liner. Having better low-, mid-, and high-speed impact protection is a huge benefit not only at the track but even on the street. With the 3/4 to full-tuck riding position of your ZX-6R, both the standard Bell Star and the Race Star would be oriented appropriately. -DrewZilla

I started looking for a replacement for my aging/corrupting Shark Evoline ( I already have an AGV K4 full-face) But this Star caught my eye with its 5mm "Panaview". Very practical for us riders with age associated range of motion issues. Now I'm questioning overall time spent utilizing my modular with the chin bar up while riding the 'cruiser,' but have no need for a new "full-face" at this time.

I went from the Bell 2015 Carbon Star into this helmet, and the 2016 model is far quieter, cooler, has a greater field of view and better fit. The 2015 model was as noisy as hell but by moving the rear spoiler further down the back of the lid and redesigning the vents there's now a lot less rumble from air turbulence and it's so much better from the noise perspective. Well worth the money.

No this helmet fit a lot better, tge only thing i changed out were the cheek pads to a smaller size but its a lot quieter (though not as quiet as others) but the increased visibility was immeadiatly noticed as well as its light weight

I bought this exact model sometime back I previously owned an agv k3sv which was a great helmet for the city but waaay to loud for the highway and after doing approximately 1000 miles I can say that is MUCH more quiet than my agv k3sv feels way more stable in highspeeds the only downside I faced with this helmet was that it had a weird squeak for the first 900 miles but lately it seems like it has stopped sounded like the shell was touching on the eps and it might had some supersmall play between the two materials causing that irritating sound.

I lost the mouth plug literally the very first ride. Also it's a pain in the ass to get in and out. And if your EPS on the bottom back bends in even a little bit the back of the neckroll won't stay in without taping it up. Teeny tiny nitpicks in an otherwise 10/10 helmet. If I crash it, I will likely buy another one

Hmm. About to pull the trigger on an RF-1200. I ride a Harley and a Monster, so mostly upright. Sounds like the Bell Star, despite not being as "racey" as the Race Star, might still be more of a sport bike helmet. Not talking about style, just function. Does my more upright riding point me more toward the Shoei?
@MotorcycleExtremist
@MotorcycleExtremist 8 жыл бұрын
+Brian Stoffer I recommend staying away from the Shoei RF-1200. It's by far the worst helmet I've ever owned. There are two major design flaws with it. One is that the front lower air vent mechanism sticks. The vent binds up in a sloppy side-to-side motion, making it impossible to get it in the middle position while riding, and difficult to even open or close. I could see it causing someone to become so detracted by it that they could end up in a wreck. The other major issue is the face-shield. It also has a design/manufacturing flaw. When riding at night, the street lights are "doubled"; which really messes with your vision. If you attach the Pinlock insert, it then doubles them all again, so you end up with duplicated lights all up and down and across your vision. Now on the other hand, my previous helmet was the 2010 model Bell Star, which is overall the best helmet I've ever owned. I will be getting this new one ASAP and dropping the RF-1200 like the ridiculously overrated trash that it is.

brakes940 The issues I'm having is still the chin vent binding and getting stuck, and the vision issue is without the pinlock installed. I even ordered a second clear shield to test and it had the same issue. I spoke to s Shoei rep and they want me to bring the helmet over to them to inspect. I hope to be able to do that soon. He also told me that they have had reports of the vent sticking issue, and recommended lubing it, which I did to no avail. They sound nice though and willing to help.

I like some changes and I think others are, for street riding, unnecessary. I like the new vents. The top vents on the old Star, Vortex, RS-1,etc... were flimsy and many times open when on the highway all by themselves. No positive lock. Now, owning a first gen Star, my transitions lens won't fit a new version Star, so add over $120 for that. I like the shield change mechanism because my Star leaks in the rain, but I like the micro detents of the old style and the old visor crack and lock lever. The new shield uses a center 'tongue' and it sticks out which creates noise and turbulence. I bet it will whistle doing head checks on the highway. I also don't see why they used large additional plastic side wings blended into the rear spoiler. Added weight and complete nonsense all in the name of someone's idea of styling. The old Star was not very noisy if the cheek pads fit well. The noise comes from a good neck seal which amplifies the internal sound like a reverb chamber - you hear your exhaust note and engine more. One culprit of this is the speaker cutouts, which thin out the helmet shell right at your ears. My old Star came with foam inserts but they're not much in the way of help there because they're thin foam. I guess my side profile is more narrow than some because I've had a Sena system in it and the speakers are way too far from the ears to hear music at full volume at 70-80mph, much less over 55mph. I am glad when Sena came out with the earbud option. This really make any judgement of how quiet a helmet is a moot point, especially with Etymotic in-ear buds. I prefer simple, like a cheap GMAX design that slips speakers into in cheek pad itself, and not the shell. I have an old Scorpion EXO-700 still and they have no speaker cut out. That didn't stop me from velcro-ing the Sena speakers to the lid, and I never felt them touch my ears but they were much closer to my ears. The Scorpion was a pretty quiet lid too and I also own an R410 which is another superb lid. Another point of nonsense, for a NORMAL rider is the stupid 5mm drop on the visor on both sides. I HAVE MIRRORS AND A NECK THAT ROTATES , so on the street and highway, where 99% of us live, this is a stupid redesign. It's done so that they are only interchangeable between the three new Star versions, so you have to upgrade, period. If they like that shield design so much it should be on ALL the Bell lineup, PERIOD. I'm sure the overall fit of the helmet is great though but for the money a Vortex is a better buy. I've owned the Vortex, RS-1, and still have my Star. Only reason I bought (numerous Stars) is because I buy closeouts and get a great price - what they're worth IMHO. In all honesty I think a cheap Qualifier is a great lid with great ventilation, without the bells and whistles most riders don't need. DOT certification is nothing to sneeze at. Now, they all say a Qualifier is a loud bucket, but take off the neck roll, which I think is unnecessary and chincy, and the internal noise will drop. My Vortex was loud but you can't remove that neck roll. There, that should do it.
@Wabbit1961

Some out there might say why am I buying a race oriented helmet? VENTING. I live in Florida! Even my first gen Star - you can feel a breeze at a traffic light! Look at the EPS of the RS-1 and the Vortex (I've owned all of them). Even though they have the same vent scheme, the holes in the EPS do not line up with the vents as well and also the different liners block what should be identical airflow.

+RevZilla I am considering the 2016 Bell Star, the Scorpion EXO R-2000, and the HJC RPHA 11 Pro. I have a bang on 57.5cm head, intermediate oval. I live in Hawaii and ventilation is my primary concern in a full face, I ride in the 3/4 and aggressive position and I am undecided on my next helmet. Also I sweat a ton from my temples, and a quality liner is paramount, I don't mind the more race fit or snug helmets as my sweat always breaks in a lid. What would you think is a good choice? Is the RPHA worth the extra $100? How do these helmets preform with heat? Any input would be much appreciated!

+Eric Terry The Shoei build quality is excellent, and the latest Bell Star is almost as nice. Both are DOT- and Snell-rated. The Shoei face shield has a lot of strong detents and a good field of vision, whereas the Bell Star's shield has fewer detents but an even wider field of vision compared to the Shoei (especially the notches for increased visibility during head checks). I'd give Shoei a big edge on build quality. Visor opening is something you get used to and never really think much about. My 3/4 helmets have way better FOV but who cares? Now, if Shoei can make their visors more affordable and give you a pinlock insert for the price of their lids, they'd be an undeniable bargain and almost an indisputable champ.

@Wabbit1961
@Wabbit1961 7 жыл бұрын
And again I say the new Star is noticeably quieter than the old one because it has no speaker cut outs, therefore thicker right there at the ears, therefore more sound deadening material where it needs to be. Bell should use this design in all their lineup and offer cheek pads like the GMAX that allow you to slip speakers into the mesh of the ear pocket. DUH! They are not that close to the ears unless your an elf or a retired boxer with cauliflower ears. As far as quiet goes, if a neck roll makes a helmet quieter then why isn't there a neck roll on the Star? Simple - a neck roll makes a helmet louder by sealing in the helmet noise and virtually amplifying it inside the helmet through reverberation. Tight, good fitting cheek pads are what deaden audible noise by isolating your ears from the rest of the helmet! Think of the helmet as a speaker cabinet. With a neck roll the only sound port you have is the space between your chin and the chin bar. Add a chin curtain and that also closes the port size down, where sound can exit from. If you narrow the port of a speaker then there is added pressure inside the cabinet (helmet). This translates to fatigue for your ears (higher internal pressure - booming bass effect -louder). Without a neck roll or chin curtain the internal pressure in the helmet is way less, equals more quiet. Good venting helps reduce internal pressure but not many know how to do this without making the helmet louder BECAUSE of the way they vent. You can feel a Star helmet vent at a stand still and the new redesign of the top vent is much quieter than the old chimney vents they used. I'd venture to say it flows less air but with that brow vent you honestly won't care.

+Grant85kg We've asked Bell the same question. Maybe they will add it if they feel enough would buy it. I think the cost of having both is probably the biggest issue.

I was going to buy this helmet in red/black from a Canadian website but it was 602$ and at revzilla its at 499$ so its a no brainer when I get around to buying it soon I live in Alberta canada

I just got this helmet today. I got the Orange/Black model. I took it out of the box, tried it on right away to make sure it fit. Took it off. The chin curtain fell off, the back where the pad snaps in to the vent doesn't want to stay. Seems like a serious crap helmet. Feels so cheap too. Honestly feels like a $200 helmet to me. I gave a brand other than Shoei a chance and once again I am disappointed. Nothing so far even comes close in quality. Anyone want to buy a helmet?

do you recommend this or the Shoei RF 1200

For most people, I recommend the RF-1200, as it's a good deal lighter than the Bell Star. -DrewZilla

+broncas I have the RF-1200 and absolutely hate it. The way the lower front vent mechanism sticks and binds is bad enough, but the street-lights being doubled in your vision at night because of a design flaw in the face-shield is at least as bad if not worse.

This or the rf1200 for sporty street riding.
@RevZilla

It depends what features you value more. The Bell Star has a wider field of vision but is heavier. The Shoei RF-1200 is lighter and also includes a Pinlock face shield and Pinlock anti-fog lens insert. -DrewZilla

Shoei helmets fit a bit narrower and for me caused forehead pressure after an hour or so. Not so with the fit of ANY of the Bell lineup. Shoei visors cost a fortune and for the price of the helmet they should all come with the pinlock insert because they fog like no other helmet I've ever owned (my reference is a Shoei Qwest)

Going up the Bell chain into carbon fiber the helmet is lighter because it's thinner and that also equals louder.
@Wabbit1961

Build quality-wise, if the fit is good for you I'd still choose the RF. It fit better on my forehead area than did the Qwest.

Bell helmets are not as nice as they used to be. i purchased one recently, and went on a ride. When I got home my helmet had taken a hit from a rock. At a closer look, the helmet design was just a wrap over a white helmet. I would be weary about trusting Bell. The one I had was not a cheap model.

how is it wearing glasses?
@RevZilla
@RevZilla 8 жыл бұрын
+Two Slow It's relatively comfortable for glasses. There aren't specific cut-outs for the glasses frames, but the slide in and sit comfortably enough for me. Of course, everyone's head is shaped differently, so your mileage may vary. -DrewZilla

Shoei always seemed to handle glasses way better. Some of the Bell designs are very tight to get glasses in and sometimes they fit cockeyed once in (higher on one side than the other, not really sitting on your ears like they should.
