The biggest problem with Bell is that they don’t offer anything upwards of 100 MBps down if your area doesn’t have Fibre yet. And they have the guts to charge 100 bucks for those speeds.

@@technerd9655 Yes, indeed. They would not credit my account after I paid them. I had the proof of payment, including banking info, but they said they hadn't received it. Two months passed with no satisfaction. Finally, I got a manager to read my letter and he investigated. He apologized, but until then, everybody at Bell was arrogant, and accusing me of non-payment. I quit using their "service" as soon as it was resolved and I will never go back.

I could never get anywhere near the speeds they promised. I had a 25 mbps package at the time, and I was barely getting 3 or 4. Two "senior" technicians visited, after being online with a few others, and even they couldn't fix things, and that included reinstalling stuff at the box level on the street.

@Pathseeker Wow. Good ol' Bell. I had nothing but trouble with the technical side, but also the billing side. They were not crediting my account even though they had my payments. I had a heck of a time getting connected to someone who would actually investigate. The service reps on the line would not let me talk to a manager, or they would not accept my bank information that proved they had been paid. So, I switched to Rogers. Then, someone in a higher position at Bell called to apologize, but it was too late. Sounds like you had quite an ordeal with them, too.

We are switching form Rogers Ignite to Bell Fibe. Our house is older in Toronto and we can literally see the cable panel on the street rotting from rust. Speed is okay by latency/jitter is poor. And the Rogers ignite hitron modems coverage is worse than bells. Rogers is stuck in the cable past, would be very funny if they turned into another AOL, modernize or suffer.

I can tell you that in my building in 2023 Rogers has jsut installed a 96-fiber fiber optic cable. It's a low-income social housing building with 390apartmentss in it. Most of the existing cable plant is run on the outside of the building. The original interior runs from 1974 have been abandoned. Exactly how they plan to use the96-fiber cable is not clear. The tech doing the installation said it was for 5G. Unfortunately, the term 5G has no real meaning anymore. Everything is going "5Geeeeee!" which makes no sense out of context. Does he mean they are going to install a 5G tower and all the modems will be replaced with 5G modems? that's too much fiber for that to be the case. Ideally, I would like to see those fibers being run to individual units and to newer Hitron modem's that are fiber connectable. Unfortunately, the installers were not interested in talking about anything having to do with the cable installation. They were just there to do the job they had been hired for. anything else was outside of their scope.

One thing not mentioned is the state of rogers infrastructure. Some of it is 50 years old with bad splices outdoors. The cable between my modem and some box outside is ancient with multiple different pieces of cable connected by a splice. Every time it rains, gets warm out, or the wind blows, my rogers connection becomes intermittent. The humidex is 36 and temp is 29 and I have been disconnected 20 times today. It drops daily or weekly otherwise. I dont think this would happen with bell fiber. Probably gonna drop rogers after over 40 years cuz its turned into garbage, yet I'm still paying a premium. They wont even be able to diagnose it if the weather is mild when a tech shows up.

I liked the video, however, Working as a telecom specialist, here are a few points to add. - there are several more types of home Internet available, really just depends on where you are. They include dial up, satellite internet, home cellular internet (mobile hotspot), line of sight internet... - coax cable does require amplification. There are many along the network, and sometimes even one installed in your home. - all different internet technology have sharing points or splitting points... not just cable. They are just in different spots along the network. The closer the splitting point is to your home, the less people you’re sharing with. In this case, coax cable is actually a better option. -All major telecom companies are now using fibre optic in Canada, not just Bell. Rogers/Cogeco/Telus. Rogers as an example, primarily uses FTTH (fiber to the home) in most new subdivisions for the past 10 years. This will give you Fiber optic grade tv, phone and internet service. Eventually every service will be internet based. - Fiber optic to the home is really just future proofing the infrastructure. The current infrastructure can, for the most part, handle the speeds offered by the companies. Bell being the exception as their capabilities are limited with the older type of phone line running to most of their network. Co-ax cable is capable you reach 1-2 gigabytes per second, but Fiber really is the best option. Theoretically, Internet speeds using fibre can get somewhere north of 1 petabit per second. Which is one million gigabytes per second. However, that requires some extremely expensive gear. - At the end of the day, where you live, and how you use the Internet will help you decide which company/ service is best for you. I recommend cable internet, but I also recommend you try each different service for at least 6 months to a year. If you don’t have problems, make note of it, there may be other factors to take into consideration. Price, speed, consistency, customer service... etc. When I first bought my home in Hamilton, I had Bell. I had a bad experience with them during my initial install (rude tech), and my speeds never reached what I was actually paying for. (Paying for 30dl, never getting higher than 10-15). Cancelled after 3 service calls with no resolution(2 months)... and they made cancelling very hard, had to obtain a lawyer. I then switched to Shaw cable (which is now Rogers Cable here) I have had cable Internet in my home now for nine years and I have never had a single problem (outside of power normal outages). My dl speeds is consistently 190-200 mbps ( I pay for 150 with Rogers Ignite ), and my upload is always around 15-20. My TV and Internet service has been consistent and If it does ever go down, it’s only down for a couple minutes at a time. I can Count on one hand the number of times it has gone down in the past nine years. Every area is different, and some better than others. Before making any decisions on which Internet company to go with, I would discuss it with the neighbours. See who they are using and how they feel about it. I wouldn’t ask someone from a different neighbourhood or city what they think of these services, because they might have had a totally different experience ( other than prices and customer service )

As an IT Pro with a background in computer/electronics engineering technology, as well as a former Rogers employee (for full disclosure) I have studied the underlying technology, and have extensive experience working with both Bell and Rogers on behalf of clients. In my experience, the overall better experience is with Rogers, not with Bell, regardless of technology. This includes dealing with both companies customer service and Tech support departments. Bell continues to outsource their call centres overseas and it's extremely difficult to get a supervisor to call back when needed, let alone one based in Canada. Rogers is difficult, and sometimes language barriers arise, but this is due to Canada's population since Rogers does not, and never have, outsource their call centres outside of Canada. They do have some (as far as I am aware) 3rd party call centres, but they are all in Canada. The only exception to this, to my knowledge, is outbound marketing, these jobs are outsourced outside of Canada. As for technology, you neglected to mention a critical component to cable that is the primary reason cable companies don't need fibre to compete with telcos moving to full fibre networks. Cable companies, since the '90s have built what are called Hybrid Fibre Coax networks, or HFC. This means that cable has been using fibre technology far longer than telcos, and telcos needed fibre simply to compete with cable. This network topology (layout) is generically known as Fibre To The Node (FTTN). For cable companies to add capacity, they simply, and relatively affordably, just run new fibre from the existing node in the neighbourhood to new additional nodes on the neighbourhood, each serving fewer customers than the original node did. Eventually (and in some areas, it's already happened) the fibre is run right into your home and then converted to cable, this is Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) or Fibre To The Home (FTTH), which is what telcos offer with fibre, and it only basically matches cable. The future of cable networks, regardless of whether they run fibre to your home or not is full duplex gigabit and multi - Gigabit connections with DOCSIS 4.0. Additionally the move to IPTV and discontinuing of legacy cable phone service (though I wish they would keep the legacy phone service for safety reasons, as much as I like over the top VoIP services) continue to free up more bandwidth available for customers, which allows more customers to have Gigabit speeds and alleviate network congestion. While you are right about HFC being a shared connection, this is effectively true of all IP networking, we just don't notice it as much on a local network due to switch technology. As others have mentioned, a well managed and well maintained networks shouldn't have issues during peak times. I do notice it occassionally as I am on Rogers, but it's rare, and it's extremely difficult to attribute it to Rogers or cable technology because the internet isn't the internet if it isn't shared, peak time online can affect anyone downstream of upstream of the congestion, and the congestion can be local, or can be at a particular Internet node connecting multiple providers together, or it could be on Netflix's, Google's, Microsoft's, or Amazon's (etc.) Servers/datacentres/fibre lines. All sorts of issues anywhere on the Internet can create congestion. The best customer experience and price will come from one of the smaller resellers such as TekSavvy (though they have become expensive to be honest), but there are drawbacks to these resellers. Additionally, both Bell and Rogers have infrastructure in various areas at various degrees of aging. This will always happen, and the business case is what dictates upgrades and maintenance more than technical issues (much to the engineers and others in the maintenance departments chagrin). Tl/dr Bell had no choice but to put fibre in, shared connectivity is a moot point with Internet connectivity, Rogers can do with HFC what Bell needs fibre to do, Rogers will have more fibre in the near future.

Yeah its gonna cost them more, but in some places it benefits, a fiber drop can go up to 1Kilo meters even longer and with coax they dont run a drop over 400ft. thats with RG11, 250ft with RG6. also really light and easy to work with. also help take some load off those congested NODE by existing cx switching to fiber.

You are totally wrong about coaxial, it does get affected by distance. The only reason why you get the same speed if you're far or near the node, is because the signal is going through a bunch of amplifiers on the utility poles that retransmit the signal to proper levels. Rogers will also use a thicker cable if your house is far from the pole to reduce loss. If you are at the end of the line, you have a lot more chances to get problems as the high frequencies might not get there in good condition because they've been amplified so much (it's just like sound, if you amplify a low-volume source over and over again, at some point you start losing quality)
@TechJockeyHD

HCkev thank you for this.
@technerd9655
@technerd9655 2 жыл бұрын
@HCkev yes, any signal, wired, or wireless will be affected by distance, even optical may have some attenuation over extreme distances. However, generally for last mile, coax is far superior than basic CAT3 twisted pair, it's simple physics, the construction of coax cable has a thicker copper conductor with thicker/superior insulation. Do amps create problems, yes, but amps aren't always a function of distance, it's a function of the number of connections on a splitter/tap.

"not shared" is not totally true in regards to dsl and home fibre. It's shared at a different point. DSL shares the network at the DSLAM or co office level. If the network is not backhauled correctly by ensuring enough bandwidth is feeding a area, you will see slowdowns. Cable has the same thing, only you may share on your street or node. With DOCSIS 3.0 and 3.1 technology, and cable companies bring fiber to the node, and making nodes smaller, it has made cable slow downs at peak not as often or at all. Fibre to the home, that bell and most providers use for FTTH uses splitting technology. This means one fiber will feed to a network splitter to feed many homes. Like other technology, slowdowns can happen should the feeding network not be large enough. As long as the network is managed well, all can be great. Fibre is always best due to the ease of upgrades to bring speeds up. As for cable... DOCSIS 3.1 also brings in a equal experience if fully implemented, which is slowly getting there. DSL, using old copper is on its last legs. Limited lifetime ahead and most issues are due to the network age.

Not biased at all. Been with both Rogers and Bell and Bell is by far the winner when it comes to speed and reliability. Rogers throttling on top of shared hub tech means I only got 1/100th the speed I was paying for. I get exactly what I pay for from Bell every day, all day. Rogers has fallen way behind the times by sticking with coaxial. Fiber optics is the way of the future. Rogers is phasing out cable tv and going strictly internet with Ignite. I’m switching to Bell Fibre before that happens. Sorry Rogers but, you’re old hat.

I had Bell Fibe years ago, and the best they could give me (downtown Toronto) was about 5 mbps. I was paying for higher than that, but 5 is all I was getting. They sent out two of their "senior" technicians (one had been with Bell for over 25 years), and neither of them could find the cause of the problem, or fix it, so I switched to Rogers and the situation is greatly improved.
@stashoneill
@stashoneill 2 жыл бұрын
@@sashineb.2114 It’s very possible you might be confusing Bell Fibe with Bell Pure Fibre. The reason I say this is Downtown Toronto office buildings and condos(even the new ones) are just starting to get Pure Fibre. A couple of years ago, Pure Fibre was, pretty much, non-existent downtown. My wife’s office on Universty Ave. still has a year to go before they get it. My cousin’s condo on Victoria St. just got it a month ago. The list goes on but, you get the idea. Originally, Bell Fibe was Bell tv coupled with their “high speed” internet that both ran on DSL which, in the downtown area, was(and still is) terrible. So, for sure Rogers was the better choice.

@@stashoneill Thanks. I left Bell around 2008, so it would have been the Bell Fibe. So, it really was terrible? I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought so. The technicians spent hours at my place, and they replaced parts in the box on the street (at least twice). Nothing made a difference and they even admitted they did not know what to do next. That was bad enough, but when Bell's Admin people would not credit my account even though they had payments from me, and would not let me speak to a senior Admin person, that was it. I haven't regretted leaving them.

Ill say it all depends where you are, Ill start by saying that rogers also have fiber and like bell its not available to all regions. so if you are in a region that either one of them has fiber thats the best choice. if there no fiber and rogers is available thats the best choice. rogers in coax still have up to 1Gbs down and up to 50Mbs up and low latency of 10-15ms. bell DSL is up to 7Mbs down not even 1Mbs up and same latency. if rogers is not available and only bell DSL your in deep woods. personally i would try over the air service like explore net or starlink. some of them rum of towers near by that use LTE which is beter then DSL might be higher latency but still have better speed. Bell has also a new wireless home internet that runs over the air but also not available in all region. dont know if its any good yet. depends if it runs off towers near by or satellites. guessing near by towers because its not available in all region. so my guess its better then DSL but probably not better then rogers. anything hardwire to the headend is better then over the air

Been dealing with Rogers over a year now, and the internet has been crap except for certain moments when it runs perfect. I get 300/20 right now, but it's unreliable. Thinking I am going to go with the Bell fiber. May be slower, but at least it will be reliable--at least in so far as I am seeing folks talk about their experience with it. The third line services all seem to go through Bell, or Rogers, and I see the most complaints from those the come off Rogers' lines.

Are you and the people you have talked to talking about unreliable Service when on wifi or when connected via wired ethernet cable? If on wifi, then it's probably a bad wifi network, which may very well be related to the Rogers modem, but is actually 100% independent of the internet connection itself. Wifi from Bell and Rogers is what businesses call value-adds. As an IT Pro, I highly recommend you get a 3rd party router and / or wifi mesh system, or if you can afford, get a business class wifi system and run ethernet cabling in your home to get ceiling mounted wireless access points properly positioned in your home. DO NOT use the wifi pods provided by Bell or Rogers either.

My favorite was when there was a fire at our place. After repairs/restoration, we were finally able to move back in. Had to call Rogers for them to fix the line, since the fire had completely burned the box off the back. Explained all this to the guy, and that we needed a tech to reinstall line connections, and the idiot asks, "Have you power cycled you box to see if that fixes the connection issues?" ..................................................................................................................................................

@@OutlawCaliber13 first of all I'm sorry about the fire, it must be very difficult to have to go through that, I hope no one was hurt, or worse. As for the Rogers issues, unfortunately this sounds like a combination of a bunch of issues. Employee passing the buck / doing the bare minimum which is against their training (I should know, I used to work in Tech Support for Rogers internet), too many people treat the call centre jobs as nothing jobs and not as entry level positions with opportunity for advancement so they do the bare minimum to keep the job. Anyways, intermittentcy, regardless of technology, is honestly one of the hardest to diagnose, and when the agents aren't doing their jobs, makes dealing with intermittentcy even harder. It's supposed to be the following process: 1) walk customer through basic troubleshooting on first call, including power cycling the modem, reseating the coax cable, checking if the modem has been moved from the original outlet it was installed on (less of an issue today, but it used to be an issue, and many times the modem would have no issues on the original outlet), if the modem is offline after troubleshooting, Book a Service call, if not, check the signal levels reported by modem, if out of specification, book a Service call. If not out of specification, but neighbouring modems are, book a Service call. 2) if you can't identify any signal issue, explain the challenges of dealing with intermittentcy, document it, and provide the reference number for the call. Usually after the 3rd call about intermittentcy, should book a service call. If you have a Tech out and it doesn't solve the issue, then a senior Tech should be offered and requested by the call centre agent. Seems like none of that was followed unfortunately. As for Service restoration after the fire, this isn't something Tech Support can really address, it's more of a customer service responsibility, it's almost a new service installation. Unfortunately the agent you got who asked you to troubleshoot either just assumed it would or should work, or didn't do their job to listen to you. They should have immediately told you that you need to speak to customer service and transfer you, or if they weren't sure, check with their manager or tier 2 before transferring. Unfortunately Rogers is responsible for all of this, but it's a human issue, not a training or policy issue.

@@technerd9655 Yeah, none of that ever happened. And no, no one got hurt in the fire. The only thing we discovered is there's virtually zero support for displaced folks in this area. I found it strange with all the church stuff around here. I'm from Texas. Churches, insurance, etc deals with all that, back home. That's a whole different can of worms.... lol Anyways, so it was customer service we was talking to to get the box reinstalled, after the fire. Just took time for the girl to understand there ain't no box on the wall, that it was literally burned off. Out internet has leveled out, for the most, though we still lose it at least once a day. Thankfully, only for a short time though.

Bell is very well known for throttling internet speeds, and I've experienced some horrible packet loss with them. Not only that, they "provide" the connections for most small ISPs in Quebec, and throttle them even more. That's without mentioning the anti-consumer and deceitful sales practices and not giving you the speeds you paid for. I switched over to videotron- they have a "hybrid" of cables and fiber-optic. I've only ever had outages very early in the morning (3:00-4:00 AM) for very small amounts of time, and very rarely. I pay for 300mbs and get over 450mbs even at peaks times.

What will happen when they launch there Fiber network to the home? Can't wait this will be a game changer! Also, you should NOT use the router and wifi built into the modems Bell and Rogers provide, beyond the security and privacy issue with that, especially with Cloud managed wifi with Rogers and Bell, they are all terrible as managing the network and wifi. You pay for Internet service, not wifi, it's a value add. Rogers' new Ignite Wifi Guarantee is a joke (and I prefer Rogers to Bell), there is no way any company can guarantee wifi service, not even if they had a technician onsite 24/7 at every customer's home. I set up wifi systems for business and homes, never in a million years would I guarantee it, not because I don't take pride in my work or install systems that work really well (which I do), but because there are 1000s of variables, most are outside my control, or the users control. Such as the weather, the RF environment (microwaves, CFL light bulbs, neighbouring networks (especially in condo buildings), cordless phones). 5GHz networks help, but limit the range. Mesh technology is great, but wired connections between the wireless access points is far superior (wired is ALWAYS better even for your printer and smart tv) to wifi and the right wifi system will work better with wired (ethernet or power line networking) backhaul than with wireless backhaul. And NEVER use wifi extenders, they make the problem worse, or agent best mask the issue. Basically, get a TP-Link Deco (budget) or Linksys Velop ( premium consumer) mesh system, or hire someone ( unless you think you can do it yourself) to put in a business class wifi system such as Ubiquiti UniFi (wifi, switches, routers/gateways, and security cameras), these are all far superior than anything Bell or Rogers offers, even the eero system Rogers offers isn't great.

Rogers is pretty bad for gaming. Their faster services have very high jitter, particularly at peak times when they have to apply very aggressive QOS to meet their bandwidth commitments. Even at off-peak times a ping can give you 35ms on the first hop to the gateway. At peak times about 5% of your pings will be 1000ms or more. However, run an upload or download speed test and it is fine. I really cant talk about Bell, but if you are a gamer. Do not buy Rogers. You will be unable to play anything, and they will not even acknowledge that you have a problem. Ran a ping test just now and this is what I got on my ignite 500 to my gateway (first hop). Rogers just called me to close my ticket as fixed. @@ScaLpiuS. Bell Fibe is best for gaming - and even the fastest bell wire is second best. I think Rogers have a fibre service, that they run ignite over and that is fine, but if you are running Rogers over Coax - run!

I appreciate the video and you are not a liar but man are you wrong on almost everything you said. This is the danger of educating yourself from little snippets of peoples experience and the misinformation on the internet. I can guarantee you that someone commenting here has a crappy NIC or wifi card and is blaming their ISP because they don't know any better but think they do.

@@TechJockeyHD So then your misinformation came from your employer. The old DSL !isn't shared is very bad info. The DSLAM usually has 48 outputs and a single input. That is sharing right there. Multiple DSLAMs at the same location are, for the most part, fed from a layer 3 switch. Switches have a single input which means sharing again as the same switch has outputs that go to different DSLAMs. The entire network is fed from bandwidth managers, like many ISPs. One massive full rack mount machine with few inputs and many outputs. Obviously sharing again. The whole point of any network is to share resources, which is what the Internet does. All of the MSOs have fibre to the home offerings depending on the area. Typically any greenfield build from 2013 and up is fully fibre fed from all MSOs. Third party ISPs can lease the copper or fibre from some of the telcos, BUT this doesn't equal having the same performance. Sometimes they lease a service and just call it their own. Other times they lease a ride back to their own equipment and their ISP of choice. The major ISPs in Canada are only Tier 2 providers. They buy internet access from Tier 1 providers like Cogent, Allstream, Verizon (formerly UUNET). If a company that rents access only doesn't subscribe to enough capacity and a major MSO carries the signal back to their oversubscribed care network, you are not going anywhere fast. Bottom line there are three things that make up a network: 1. Core (connects to the outside world and other hubs with self healing redundancy) 2. Distribution (connects the hubs to the neighbourhoods) 3. Access (connects the customers to the network AKA the last mile) Everything is shared. You can provide more capacity than what is needed to keep speeds up. You can virtually/physically segment the network so equal amounts of access is delivered, but the maximum achievable is lower. On a pure fibre network, you can use different light wavelengths to physically share a single fibre, but that's expensive. There's more. Not too simple huh?

Currently with Bell 100 down 10 up. I was with Rogers 500 down 20 up. Let me just say although Rogers has a faster download speed, but in useable real world scenario, Bells DSL (and Fiber if you lucky) is way better! The line quality is just not very good for Rogers. You will have tons of packet loss and this can be seen by making WhatsApp video calls. When I had Rogers internet (500u) my video calls would constantly reconnect, every 45 seconds or less. This was regardless of how far away I was to the router. I tried using their provided router and my own Asus with the same result. An Ookla soeedtest result shows 600+mb/s download speed. What's the point of going at fast when you're losing data along the way? In short, stick to DSL. Note, everyone I know with Rogers has the same issue... My two cents.
