Way back in the fifties I came to Belle Glade as a child. We were desperate hillbillies, and my folks worked the vegetable packing plants. We rented a little tin shack for $8.00 a week. It was set four feet off the ground on a cement platform. It was all one room, about 12X14 with no insulation on the tin. The uninsulated tin roof/ceiling dripped rain and condensation most of the time. There were "U" shaped blocks, each with a toilet/bath house out by the entrance road. Nearby were city water faucets, as non of these units were plumbed. Electric was a flat $10.00 a month, if you could afford it. There were better houses; wooden two, three, or four bedrooms structures, situated further along the main roads. These were about $60.00 a month plus electric. They were better, and dryer, than the tin shack, but not mansions by any stretch of the imagination. This migrant housing camp had been a military base at one time, or so I was told, as best I remember from over six decades ago. I suppose the wooden houses had been officers quarters, while the tin shack were enlisted barracks.(?) I wonder what ever became of that place? There was another camp at Pahokee that I heard kids mention, though I was never there. If you think Belle Glade looks third world now, you should have seen it through eight year old eyes out of the back windows of a 1939 Chevy sedan on our weekly trip to the Piggly Wiggly and Woolworth's. Especially when the sky was black from the cane fields being burnt. I've told my kids and grandkids about this place, but they look at me like I've gone senile and making up stories. Anyone know where I could get information on the old camps? Anybody left alive on here that remembers them?

Nah, my dad is from Pahokee and he says the same thing. My dad’s family migrated there from neighboring Clewiston, Fl. After the 1928 super hurricane hit and put the entire town under water for months although I heard it was a beautiful place until the storm killed the town people. The people there kinda just wandered back and started living. It actually came up in the last few years but still dirty, dark and depressing 🤷🏾♀️

@EDC I can understand where you are coming from but that was then and this is now. $27,000 isn't the same amount of money as it was valued to be 10....or even 5 years ago. That $27,000 is based on 2 people being employed in the same household. Single mothers and fathers have way less to work with.

Hard to believe I grew up there. Went to glades central. Belle Glade elementary, gove elementary, lake shore middle,Christian Day( now apart of Glades Day), and Glades day too! Pahokee, Harlem in clewiston, canal point, they all look like this. Back in the day, lake shore middle was in downtown Belle Glade. Right on Ave E. Went through that shit every day. Belle Glade is full of migrant workers. Most of the Haitian, Jamaicans, were brought in by big sugar to cut sugarcane down. You can find any drug u want there. Cheap too. But there is some nicer areas if town. The video only shows downtown. But the nicer areas are few and far. Nice to reminisce, but I don't miss that town.

Once obtaining my directions, I thought I might take in a game of billiards. I quipped that I had a crisp 100 dollar bill in my possession and would like to challenge one patron in a lively game of billiards. Marquess of Queensberry rules of course. I am happy to say that after spending six weeks in intensive care, and regaining the sight in my left eye, and my sense of smell, I will in the future invest in the finest GPS system known to man...as soon as my car is recovered.

Like idiots, we took a shortcut through Pahokee/Belle Glade from Orlando to Ft. Lauderdale, at night. It was one of the scariest moments in my life. A white family in a rented minivan getting lost in this area at night. People were swarming the minivan at a barricaded street in front of a 7-11. People were coming up to minivan looking inside and standing in front of vehicle. My husband beeped the horn, they wouldn't move, so he revved the engine and moved forward. They hit the hood but moved out of the way. We called the police because we were lost (this was in the 90s before GPS, only had phone). He helped us locate a somewhat safe area, met us, then escorted us back onto the highway. He told us that he didn't even go through that neighborhood at night.

On our way back from vacation one summer my dad was showing us how some of our poor fellow black folks really live and he drove us through Liberty City. There was a white couple whose rental van broke down. They had a baby with them. He stopped and picked them up and took them to the airport. He said he just couldn't leave them with their baby like that because it was unsafe and it was getting dark.

I am a proud black man who love his people, I am also a (Woke) black man who love his people, So I decided to just take a look at what & where are blacks are today with the rapid change of gentrification, So I decided to take a ride with an unknown driver.........(A Person Who Travels Around Urban Area's In The United State With A Dash Mounted Camera) What I notice right off to no surprise, everything look the same across the board in most every state I visited in the Urban area, Run Down Buildings, Boarded Windows,Trash,Liquor stores on every corner, burned & dormant homes (Beautiful Homes) For every 5 burned home there was a family living in 1 with children playing outside as if nothing is going on in their neighborhood....It seem the city's & States seem to be doing well? What is going on? Where are the leaders? Where is the funding? Why in most city's and states official seem to do well in terms of employment @ 6 & 7 figures a year suggesting their doing a fabulous job managing and spending tax payers dollars on infrastructure when every city have a visible dark side...In my opinion I think we should clear the monopoly board and start all over on the way we price economics....I watch shows how someone will pay 5 Million dollars for a baseball card or someone will pay the price for 1 or 2 things that would take 1000 people to work 10 years just to pay for that one item...I say this because obviously these neighborhood need some wealth generation and funding....There should be a law on certain percentage of rich and or the people who are in control of large sums of money and the way they spend especially in a wasteful way when this world is surrounded by poverty when this shouldn't be....My plan has too many words for this comment, but I am very disappointed at my people right now because there not grabbing thing by the boot strap, or something else sinister is going on!
