Today I managed to catch Joe Biden boarding Marine One for a quick flight to Andrews, followed by a longer flight to South Carolina. While he was down south, I ran over to the Department of Justice where Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream decided he wanted to get arrested in support of Julian Assange. Audio was a bit spotty due to some construction nearby and a downpour, but you'll get the idea.

Before I retired I worked a lot of presidential details and was part of the detail that made sure there were no fire hazards where the president, vice president or family were at any time during their visits. The day were long but I found that the secret service members were mostly a great group to work with. They had an area set up during a visit where all involved could eat and get off their feet , while the protected were speaking. I remember that the military members that carried the 'football' sat down to eat across from me and I had the opportunity to talk with them. All of them were service academy graduates, very smart and dedicated. One of them pulled a device out of a bag, pushed a button and was instantly talking to the pentagon getting world situation updates in case the president needed them. Everyone worked long hours in all kinds of weather. At the end of the day they were all ready for their relief to come. As one of the agents told me, Long boring days requiring you to be highly alert and hoping that the next second you were not in the middle of a dangerous situation.

Fort Stevens, now partially restored, was built to defend the approaches to Washington from the 7th Street Pike (now Georgia Avenue) which was then the main thoroughfare from the north into Washington. Originally called Fort Massachusetts by the soldiers from that state who constructed the fort, it was later named after Brig. Gen. Isaac Ingalls Stevens, who was killed at the Battle of Chantilly (Ox Hill), Virginia, September 1, 1862. By the summer of 1864, the great bulk of Union troops in the east were engaged in siege operations around Petersburg, Virginia. In fact, when Ulysses S. Grant moved south in the Spring of 1864, he stripped Washington, DC, of many well trained troops to add weight to his offensive. As a result, in July of 1864, there were only 9,000 troops to defend the city, down from over 23,000 the year before. Those that were left were primarily poorly trained reserves. Robert E. Lee was desperate to reduce the pressure on his forces around Petersburg, and so decided to send General Jubal A. Early and about 20,000 troops to strike at Washington which spies had reported was poorly defended. On June 12, Early began his march north from Petersburg and by July 9, was at Frederick, Maryland, where he demanded and received $200,000 to spare the city. On the same day, Early defeated Union Gen. Lew Wallace at the Monocacy River. In the light of later events, Wallace's defeat after a stubborn fight became a victory for the Union because he was able to delay Early's advance for a day. On July 10, Early encamped at Rockville, Maryland, only 10 miles from Fort Stevens. Reacting to this threat to Washington, Grant ordering the 1st and d 2nd Divisions of the 6th Corps and part of 19th Corps to the capital on July 7. The veteran units reached Fort Stevens arrived off the Potomac River around noon on July 11 as Jubal Early's lead elements advanced toward the capital. Over the following several days, Early probed Fort Stevens and its environs but never mounted a full-scale attack. Union reinforcements had reached Washington and Fort Stevens just in time. Located atop the parapet of Fort Stevens is a commemorative stone dedicated to Abraham Lincoln. On July 12, 1864, the President stood atop the parapet to observe the fighting and came under fire from Confederate sharpshooters. It is the only time in American history in which a sitting president came under direct fire from an enemy combatant. In the years to come, many individuals would claim the honor of advising the President Lincoln to come down from the parapet. The most notable was a young officer named Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. His remarks to the president were short and straightforward: "Get down, you damn fool!" Holmes would eventually serve as a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, 1902-1932. Each year, the anniversary of the Battle of Fort Stevens is commemorated with special programs, living history, and more.

@ about 10 minutes, it was mentioned about drug sniffing dogs. This reminds me of a few decades ago when Congress pushed for urinalysis tests for Food Stamp Appliers/Recipients in need of Assistance. Congress had been doing this, the same old thing, about every 10 years or so for quite awhile, (even though the Results have always been the same), and Americans who lived in Florida had, had enough of Congress's abuse, so they Demanded that all of the Congress Members were to also submit to a urinalysis test, to which Congress agreed. The tests were given. Every single one of them Failed their urinalysis and they Refused to share the Results/Found Drug Use Evidence with The American People, who Paid For the Tests. They have never agreed to take any more drug tests, and they have never brought up their demand for Food Stamp Appliers/Recipients to be required to take a drug test again either. Results: Multi-Decades of Testing Americans who needed Food Stamps was always at just 3% of the Total of Hundreds of Thousands, maybe Millions of Americans that were tested, who actually tested positive for an illegal drug, just 3%, no matter how many times and how many Multi-Millions of American Tax Dollars that were Approved by Congress to constantly Harass Americans. As for Congress? 100% Tested. 100% Positive Results. One Test Only, One Time. All Failed. ** Back to this video mentioning drug sniffing dogs... @@sweett2185 I remember when they boycotted Bud Light by buying Modelo not understanding that AB InBev made both. I bet they do the same with Ben and Jerry's and another ice cream brand that is also made by Unilever. Unilever just happens to be the largest maker of ice cream in the world so I think they are going to find it tough to boycott them.

Great video as always. My son moved to D.C. two years ago, i loved visiting him and going around d.c., it was a great time going around there, but not a great place where he lived, he moved this past may to Virginia in Fairfax county, very nice place and 25 min out of d.c., i was there again at the end of June, and I miss it already lol. But your videos keep me close to him and very informative, thank you.
