It just wasn't a "stargate" show and I think it would have had a better chance as an entirely different IP. Trying to bank off stargate fans when it was so different probably got it more bad 'word of mouth' than it deserved as its own show.
@quinnsinclair70286 жыл бұрын
Neiloch it’s sort of the same problem as Star Trek Discovery. It had a seriously rocky start but it would not be garnering the hate it has if it wasn’t under the Star Trek IP.
@quinnsinclair70286 жыл бұрын
Craig X I didn’t say DIS didn’t have serious problems. It absolutely did but those problems wouldn’t have garnered such hate had it just been a badly written sci-fi show. No one would have cared and it would have faded into obscurity. It’s the same problem that Universe faced. It’s first few episodes also had some serious (though extremely different and much more fixable) problems but they were subjected to such hate because it was not what Stargate fans wanted. To be clear though I am not saying they are the exact same thing. Only that there are similarities. Universe had some defects but had massive story potential whereas the way Discovery is structured it literally has nowhere to go. All it can do is spin its wheels for ten seasons on plots that can’t go anywhere that no one in universe will ever talk about before it ends. They simply share the fact that as part of larger franchises neither did what fans wanted and there was massive uproar. Of course for universe this was cause they tried something new whereas Discovery was trying to pander so hard to so many different people that it left itself appealing to absolutely no one.
@DrZaius31414 жыл бұрын
@@neiloch At the same time, a franchise has to develop, otherwise it gets real stale real quick. Personally, I hated SG1 after season 8, because the whole Ori thing was just Goa'uld painted in some different shades. Atlantis was vastly different with a much larger cast of protagonists, the gate network was much more resaonable and interesting because it wasn't just a billion islands but an actual network people used and they didn't go full on jingoistic on the US-military thing. Secondly, the start of a new show is always rough. First season of SG-1 had a lot of really bad episodes that didn't make sense, first season of TNG was utter garbage, first season of TOS was bad, first season of DS9 had weak spots - it's always very similar and SG:U was never really given a chance to break out. True, the show had deep issues, namely Young and Scott being utterly boring characters that were just military stereotypes. The others could be grating at times, but at least they weren't walking clichees. And then there's Eli who is probably the best Stargate character after McKay and whose character development and overarching plot might have been truly special.

Oh, no... It is common knowledge that he despised his time on the show. When he was finally able to leave , he did, only to discover there were no jobs lining up waiting for him. It was only then that he came back and was less of a douche to everyone. Marina Sirtis said that while she was guesting on an episode Shanks would walk around saying, "Who do I have to F*ck to get off this show".
@NeaEmrys6 жыл бұрын
It seems to me he has a love hate relationship with the show, I don't see Shanks going around being a dick - he probably was a little tired after the first couple of seasons, but then he probably realized how good he had it. His personality seems to be very sarcastic and joking, so I don't think he really hated it that much, it's just his personality.

Sadly ,nothing is further from the truth. Show insiders speak of him wanting off the show for years. making snarky remarks and hating on the show. I really liked SGU because it finally was a Stargate series for adults. Also, both SGA and SG1 used the classic formula of the perfectly balanced team of a brave leader, a genius, the muscle and a guide, everyone working in perfect harmony. But Universe threw that out the windows with a very insecure leader who actually hates the genius that everyone depends on to fix things even though his personal agenda is very different from the others. Its more of a Sci-fi drama than sci-fi action.

Just typical "if you don't want to have sex with every woman who offers you must be gay" guy stuff. People seem to forget Ben Browder played almost the exact same character as he portrayed in Farscape. Same with Claudia Black, albeit her character was a tad more different as it was in Farscape. Don't get me wrong, I like both actors and love both shows. However I don't think it was a good move to have them both come on the show. Or even at all. In my opinion SGU was way better than the last two seasons of SG1. The Ori arc was so ridiculous, I only accept it because I can never have enough sci-fi in my life and ofcourse I love the franchise. There were only handful episodes I actually liked in s9-s10, whilst I only disliked a handful episodes in SGU. Absolutely loved every crazy bit of Farscape and the character John Crichton. However I absolutely loathed his character in SG1, I didn't fit. Ben Browder is a decent actor, but one-dimensional, gets boring pretty fast. Shanks seems like a chill dude to hang out with. He's got an attitude, he's someone who you have to reply to, with an equally or even better response/mockery.
@Superschokokeks6 жыл бұрын
Did we see the same Ben Browder on Farscape? He showed a wide variety of emotion through the whole series and Mitchell was nothing like Crichton..
@RAFMnBgaming6 жыл бұрын
Nah, what i think they tried to do was flip the character archetypes between the two actors, Crichton is Red Oni, Mitchell is Blue Oni, Aeryn is Blue Oni, Vala is Red Oni. Problem was they didn't really do anything for Mitchell beyond that. Fortunately Vala already had something to go off of because they'd already come up with a character for her. Of course it didn't help that they'd come off of such a instantly recognizably unique and fleshed out lead character like O'Neill.
@emergencyCALL9113 жыл бұрын
I never saw Farscape so I didn't see it from that angle. I didn't like Vala in season 9 because I just wasn't fond of her character. She was just a cliche run-of-the-mill sexy rebel chick. She was better in season 10 because being a mother made her grow up a bit and added more depth to her character, but I'd still take Sam over her any day.
@alavitka3 жыл бұрын
Watch some non-fiction movies with Ben, you might change your opinion. Although for me after Farscape he looked bored playing Mitchell. He's able to spout with emotions whereas Mitchell was such a military disciplined guy. I remember one OOC scene at the start with him and Teal’c in that room with floor coming down to crush them, when he said "Bullets bounce!" in a super-charged manner which reminded me of Chriсhton vividly, but the show runners probably ordered him to never do this again. Anyway, most American movies & series just don't require acting at all, the exceptions are always English or Australian actors who actually had some classical theatrical several years training. And even most of those stop being versatile after becoming Hollywood stars. For example, I was impressed by Hugh Jackman only after I watched his earlier Australian roles, because seriously, not much talent required to play Van Helsing or Wolverine. Just look mean and you're good. Same goes for Hugo Weaving (agent Smith & Elrond). Even my favourite Christian Bale disappointed me as Batman & John Connor in Terminator 4. The exceptions (like Alan Rickman, Ian McKellen, Robert Carlyle) somehow are never the superstars like native Tom Cruise or Bradd Pitt or even Leonardo Dicaprio who, I suppose, are always required to act more or less the same as the lead male heroes (I was only able to measure DiCaprio's talent after watching some old drama where he played a half-witted teenager - that was something really Oscar-worthy!). Curiously, Jason Statham & Daniel Craig are English actors but due to the genre of their star roles they also look everywhere pretty much like the same guy which could be played by anyone with enough presence. It's just the way things are done onn big screen. But it's obviously the most profitable way in today's world (i.e. most popular in demand), so we have what we have.
