I was eating in a local restaurant years ago when a man slowly walked by the booth in which I was sitting. He paused ever so slightly, looking directly at me, and I looked directly at him. Within an instant, he knew, that I recognized who he was. Never a word crossed between us, but the knowledge of knowing the adoration of a fan was ever present. That man in the restaurant was Vince Edward.

GOD !! This man was GORGEOUS !! Makes you want to go out and get sick just to have him treat you ... LOL ! When I was a kid I use to hear my mom talk about him (latest episode) to the neighbor lady (60's housewife's ) while she was hanging her laundry out on the clothes line , ahhh! memories . Didn't understand it then , sure do now , he had such brooding look and oh ! the chest hair that would wisp out at the top of his medical attire collar ..mmmm... He was quite a good actor , shame he didn't do much else . Thanks for making this fine tribute .

Hi OldMrMemories. Thank you for your comments. I have very precious memories of my childhood growing up in the 1980's watching Ben Casey reruns with my mom. Yes, both the 1960's and the 1950's were magical especially the tv shows that came out during that time that I got a chance to see alot of them in reruns during the 80's. TV shows worth watching and not the garbage that they show today. There will never be great tv shows again like they were from 1950's to some shows in the 1980's.

iam from Sydney Australia, was named after ben casey I have lots of memorabilia from the show, it's great to have someone remembering him. I watched the reruns of the 1980s, I remember made-for-TV movie about bc returning from a tour of Vietnam as a combat surgeon. Very nice. I watched Ben Casey with my older sister and she never missed an episode. She even had one of Vince's records, and her own fan club in our neighborhood. I was so sad when we lost Vince. He passed away way too young.

I bought the DVD's of Ben Casey on eBay ten years ago....they were homemade from god only knows what source, and they might still be available. I got about a hundred episodes on about 12 discs for around a hundred dollars....and worth every penny.

Watched Ben as a kid, and he was my idol. Masculine, straight shooter. Loved "The Return of Ben Casey" in 1988. Bought complete DVD set of all Casey episodes on eBay for about a hundred dollars a few years ago. Look for the complete set, because some vendors offer only a few episodes for the same price. I bought the Valjean 45 RPM single record when it came out, too. Love the image of Vince Edwards in 'Return...' sitting alone late at night in a diner, going over his medical notes. That was Ben!

I think Vince should have had more tv roles and been in more movies. Also, I think he deserved alot of awards for his acting ability. There seems to be a time interval when a person is best typified and characterized and best remembered. And for me, 1961 to 1964 does it for Vince Edwards, when he was playing the role of Ben Casey. I have seen him in later years and his "come back" series. It didn't do anything for me. I kept wanting to see the man I saw in 1961. I know that's totally unreasonable, but that's how I felt. His appearance in that time interval was forever branded in my mind of what Vince Edwards look like at his best, and the only way I want to see him and remember him.

What a fantastic show. I became a doctor because of Ben. I was in love with him at 2. I still love dark, strong silent sorts. I can't figure out whether I was born that way or if Ben imprinted my tiny mind and set a trend. I got some DVD's of Ben Casey off ebay last year. They are hard to watch because they're so scratchy but it's still so good. Also, the medicine is out of date obviously but still really accurate and not silly .

Ben Casey premiered 50 years ago today. It is a crime that CBS/Paramount has not released this classic on dvd.

Thank you for your post. I have been lobbying distributors for the release of Matt Lincoln for years. Also, the pilot film Dial Hot Line. Matt Lincoln is my dream dvd release. Matt Lincoln was never given a chance in 1970. ABC aired this series at 7:30 opposite Flip Wilson and Jim Nabors. Of course, it missed its target audience completely and was cancelled. I would love to see scenes from Vince Edwards 1970 TV series Matt Lincoln poted on You/Tube. I remember one episode where a young classical piano player is going deaf. Matt Lincoln was a great series !

Hi. Ben Casey was certainly a classic. Vince Edwards was brilliant in the role. A great actor who was typecast after Ben Casey. Hollywood did not do right by him. I would love to see his forgotten series also on dvd titled MATT LINCOLN. It was cancelled abruptly after sixteen episodes. ABC brainlessly aired this series at 7:30 opposite Flip Wilson and Jim Nabors. As Matt Lincoln, Vince played a psychiatrist who ran a walk-in clinic and a telephone hotline for mostly troubled teens.

Remembering Vince Edwards on what would be his 84th birthday. Vince passed in 1996 from pancreatic cancer at the age of 67. Neither of his tv series are on dvd. Ben Casey or Matt Lincoln, which is not well known because ABC aired it at 7:30 in 1970. It was the definite 1970's series. It was never given a chance in a normal timeslot and cancelled after 16 episodes. There is also the pilot movie titled DIAL HOT LINE, which aired as an ABC tv movie of the week.
