To make Trump's across the board cuts to executive spending as a deliberate plan by him to under American health is very disingenuous. Regardless, it's the private sector not the CDC nor the WHO that producing the results needed. I for one am glad to have a president to use his federal powers with restraint and allowing states to exercise the powers they have to curb this epidemic. This is exactly the type of governance the Founding Fathers wanted where local governments who are better suited to handle their needs are doing what they can while the federal government oversees the wellbeing of the whole nation through powers enumerated to them such as international travel. My biggest fear isn't the disease, I know we as an innovative and ingenious species that we will overcome this. My biggest fear in the federal gaining even more powers growing in size and scope. So far there is no way to objectively prove Trump has done that in this case. You can make an argument if Trump doesn't give up what little he has enacted after this is all over.

By "unproven", they mean there is no study confirming the efficacy of the drug for COVID-19. FDA approval means it is safe as prescribed. Big difference. That said, there are ZERO studies of ANY drug because we didn't know enen KNOW about this virus even 6 months ago. A study would take longer to complete than that! There IS anecdotal evidence that the drug is effective, but without ANY proof of ANY drug working, it seems prudent to go with the anecdotally efficacious drug because that's as good as it will get before the economy crosses the the point of no return.

So let me get this straight... (over all the cases) 80% mild symptoms. 20% somewhat severe symptoms. 4-6% needs ICU. 2-4% might die even if they get a ventilator. I'd agree. The people getting tested are likely those having mild-to-severe symptoms. I don't think we'll get accurate numbers until we can start testing antibodies in large sets of random groups of people, that way we can start adding more recovered people to the stats (which I suspect is a large number).

Alan Garcia Cardenas it’s actually not that complicated. What we know right now is testing is only being given to a subset of people showing symptoms and the rest are being denied a test because they’re not struggling. So how do we know actual mortality rate? Well there’s one group that gets tested any time they have symptoms- caregivers. So far 0.4 to 0.7% of that group died. We’re still not done though as studies out of China, Iceland and other areas have shown that up to 50% of infected people show no symptoms. So it’s likely caregivers are getting it and not knowing. So maybe we dilute that mortality rate to closer to 0.2-0.35%. Now we know caregivers are mostly 25 and older. No caregivers are under 25. We also know from studies that people under 25 rarely even have symptoms let alone die. Thus if we apply the caregiver mortality rate to the entire population we’re likely to see it drop to closer to 0.1%, which is essentially seasonal flu. One issue that needs to be considered lastly is the older citizens with complications. That particular group is going to be considerably higher risk. This is true for seasonal flu as well. Thus you use the same criteria you would for seasonal flu. Remember seasonal flu deaths are already doubling as a result of an aging population. They’re very high lately. It’s not because the flu is more deadly. It’s because it’s infecting a population with higher % of older people. Baby booms eventually lead to a boom in deaths. That’s going to happen. It’s not an anomaly.

Right now those dying from this have a very high political value. Iceland tested 5% of their population at random. 6.5% had the virus. That’s pretty high. If that’s used here in the USA or elsewhere the actual number infected is very very high and thus mortality rate very low. I’m suspecting the CDC is already aware of this with their 100-200k dead rate. They’re assuming 60-80% of our entire population would get it and even a low mortality x a high population group leads to a decent size number. They know it’s not Spanish flu their just riding this out a little longer until they’re certain

When doing statistics, people need to know that if there’s a 2% probability of death- that’s a general average which tends to be for the largest population (global), a sample of that population may have 11% whilst another may have .01% deaths. 2% apply as a general average which tends to assume normality. Humble EMT here, learning everyday that I know very little about anything, I agree with Trump. If we can avoid the ventilators the better. I think some thoughts should be put into how CPAP or bipap can help in this time. We need to develop some kind of filter for them. But I'm my limited experience the CPAP has saved me from having to intubate more than a few times.

The good news is that most of the people who get this will recover, the bad news is that people with lung conditions will be hardest hit and some of those will die. A 1% mortality rate is a lot better than many of the infections we suffer every year. The best thing we can do during this is to not panic. The best thing to do is follow your doctor's advice and DO NOT self medicate, especially with things that were never intended for human use. The grades of antibiotics for animals is very different from the grades designed for humans. Be smart, be safe and above all, remain calm.

My uncle was on missions trip in Asia and there was a family from Wuhan in his camp. They were wearing masks (back in December I believe). He came home and had all the symptoms within a couple weeks....he could not get tested and had to hunker down at home for over a month. He's fine, but someone else from the trip did die (they had asthma). Point is...we aren't ever going to know the true numbers if someone who literally came in contact with people from Wuhan, while in Asia, couldn't even get tested.

Just got out of the hospital with diffuse pneumonia related to Covid. Demanded hydroxychloroquine and Zithromax when I got admitted. I think it may have saved my life. We need to make this treatment regimen more available and earlier in the course of the disease. There’s no need to give this medicine only when you’re admitted by the hospital or need ventilation assistance.

We lost the Matriarch of our family last night. The problem is there are very religious people in my family and they do not want to wait to bury because people are supposed to be buried within 24 hours but we have members of our very large family who are currently sick with mild symptoms but have tested positive and we have many family members who are at risk or elderly which put them at high risk! This is a problem many are facing. I wish there were virtual live streaming funeral services it would be a great service to the world if they did.

It would be good to know what the average recovery rate for someone on a ventilator is generally for other health issues in comparison. Because it seems like I heard the longer you are on a ventilator the less likely you are to recover, and that for several reasons: sedation for the pain of a ventilator, being bed ridden on a ventilator, blood clots, more fluid build up in the lung, eating, and maybe even the loss of the desire to live.

And just so everyone knows, hydroxychloroquine IS an FDA approved drug (Plaquenil). FDA approval means it is approved for sale/use in the US. Their approval is based on the studies for specific uses. Those specific approvals are based on the studies done that show its safety and efficacy. (Example: Singulair is a drug used for asthma patients and is FDA approved for that purpose- but not to treat scar tissue formation after surgery). However, if a drug is available in the US, a doctor can write or prescribe Singulair for whatever reason they deem appropriate even if it is not for what that drug is approved for by the FDA, this is called "Off-label" use and it happens all the time. The same would be true for hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin. It doesn't have to go through the normal FDA approval but at the discretion of the doctor and patient after a discussion regarding evidence and efficacy (i.e., informed consent).

One important stat that no one here got is that out of the 1 to 2% that end up on a ventilator.....only 10 to 50% chance of survival. That is terrible terrible odds. It means that if you are put on a ventilator.....you probably will DIE! The ventilator is almost .........useless.

The other 7 were between the ages of 45-64. 6% (84) of the entire cases (1326) had to go to the ICU. Out of the 84 cases that needed ICU, 12 were aged 20-44, 31 were aged 45-64, and 41 were aged over 65. I know its bad in NYC and other places, but it's not so bad in Phoenix. Weather? The ventilators are merely 'placebos' in some way. They're mostly designed to reduce inflammation for pneumonia situations not to deal with oxygen 'depletion' which is what COVID-19 patients are suffering from. They can easily lead to 'saturation' inside the lungs.
