Ben assembles an Xbox One S Laptop using parts from a previous teardown of an Xbox One S. The new laptop includes 3D printed parts, an aluminum base cut with a CNC machine, a new power supply to power both the Xbox and LCD screen, and smaller fans powered by a rigged circuit using a Tip 102. Decide on a Future Build Project at bit.ly/2iMHnih
What Prototype Would You Like to See as a Commercially Available: bit.ly/2iMHnih
Get a Gift, Give a Gift! Share Your Story: bit.ly/2iztALG
The major components of the Xbox One S are a Blue Ray Drive, Power Supply Unit, a Motherboard, and a Hard Drive. Ben takes the motherboard and scans an image of it in Adobe Illustrator. He uses laser patterns to knock holes in the board. This gives him as many options for mounting this as possible.
He puts together all the Xbox One components. He’s extended the power cable of the blue ray drive, he’s moved the hard drive, he’s put the front panel PCB at a right angle and ported out the buttons (eject, bind, and power), he’s moved the wifi module to an end degree angle, and he’s using the new short HDMI cable to connect to a screen.
He replaces the power supply with a more powerful unit as the added power is needed for the LCD screen. He also replaces the large fans with two smaller fans for his laptop. By keeping the control line, the system can throttle the fans up and down as needed by heat load. To do this he rigs up a circuit using a Tip 102.
The 12 V fans are wired in parallel, 12 V comes from the console and goes into the positive wire, and the negative wire from the fans goes into the collector of the Tip 102 NPN Darlington Transistor allowing you to switch the current on and off. The control line from the Xbox goes through a 1K resistor and into the base of the Tip 102. Finally, the emitter of the Tip 102 goes into ground. The Tip 102 acts as the circuitry inside the fan did allowing the fan to turn on with their speed controlled by the system.
Ben cuts the aluminum base for the Xbox One S laptop with a CNC machine. He can then attach the 3D printed wall sections to the aluminum. Next he attaches the power supply and the blue ray drive to the aluminum base. He then makes adjustments to allow the motherboard to fit.
Before closing the inside off with 3D printed parts, Ben goes over what’s inside. There’s a new power supply with 13.9 amps, a blue ray player, a wifi module, hard drive, wireless controller module, and a control panel. There’s a driver board for the LCD and a heat sink for the APU.

I would argue that any laptop intended for gaming pretty much needs to be plugged-in to actually game (otherwise you often get like, 30-45minutes). So in that sense this is spot-on to the functionality of a 'gaming laptop'. It's also neat that this has the power supply built into the chasis instead of as an external brick.

20:40 I was also a cable installer...and what he is talking about is a coax tester/tuner. These items attach to the bare copper coated wire inside the coax connector from your cable box and then the other end attaches the same way. When both ends are on the same line there is an audible tone to let you know that you found the cable that has the connector on the other end. These are notoriously cheap and break, run out of battery, stop working, lose audio, and so on.
@RetroAdventure

There are a lot of different types of these: www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=coax+tester&tbm=shop&spd=13765752482076737384But I think he was referring to this one: www.philex.co.uk/catalogue/product/?id=640&cat=1125

Please take your time on more future builds. A lot of the newer stuff seems rushed. A long term project every month or so would be great. I don't know about re-visiting specific builds, but if you could just rotation all of them through a schedule. Just a thought. I know you need to release regularly, but there should always be long term builds, in my opinion.

Suggestion for next build: Hey Ben! I've always wondered about this. How about you buy a Nintendo Wii (With Homebrew would be better) and a Wii U gamepad. You can modify the controls, like the left analog stick being the Wii Nunchuk and the right one synced to the d-pad controls. L and ZL can be Z and R and ZR can be B. The X Button can also be B. Y can be 1 and B can be 2. This, if done correctly, will make a Wii Gamepad (Wii Portable) and can be used as a regular controller for the Wii. Make sure to build the sensor bar into it! Like if you agree!

You are correct. The bigger fan was probably chosen for the Xbox One S design because having a single bigger fan with low RPMs to maintain airflow on the whole case makes much less noise than several smaller ones going at much higher RPMs constantly. Something the PS4 gets often criticized for by people who find the constant audible whir of the fans annoying. In Ben's design I think that airflow on the case overall is probably not good enough for gaming not because the fans are too small (As you rightly point out they are going at much higher RPM), its because the components are laid out differently and further appart than the original design and the space is rather cramped too. The PSU might not be getting good enough airflow or its likely just getting hot air from the rest of the components.

Why would you need to make a portable Switch? That's one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard. The system is already portable, and Nintendo has said that the dock serves no purpose other than TV connection and charging, which you can already do with the charger. Literally nothing would be gained by integrating the dock.

my iPhone is better than the vita and it can do a whole lot more than just game well this portable xBox idea kinda sucks as it is pointless as you need a 3D printer and CNC machinery which is expensive i know there are cheap 3D printers for under like $500 but that CNC will set you back over $10K and i know you can create your own PCB's and other parts but that is too much time consuming i personally know quite a bit on electronics but this guy is old school he knows how electronics work etc... but he is sort of basic and he lacks the knowledge of competing products and so on such as gaming laptops and so on at least PC gaming is not as complicated as this because i am no expert at this but i do know what i am doing when it comes to electronics but this type of stuff is too much for me

I didn't mean APU on it ;) But PSU will overheat and fry PCB on MB. It overheats like crazy already playing music/movies (the guy in vid said it goes over 100 degrees F). With games that would go even higher as more power would be needed to fuel games. Cool idea, but unusable for gaming.
@Tom-gv7hc
@Tom-gv7hc 7 жыл бұрын
any computer whether it be a pc, mac, xbox or ps should not be going any higher than 90* CELSIUS (apu mainly), 100* fahrenheit should be just fine for the psu itself as shown in the video
@info0
@info0 7 жыл бұрын
Thomas Myers remember PSU was not even under load when it hit that temp. That's what hit me first. Fans came to my mind afterwards. 2 options console would have when overheating: thermal throttle or emergency shut down. APU would not fry that easily that's for sure.

100 F is ~37 C, numbnuts. That's like 4 degrees above idle temperature. The machine's thermals are fine. In the future, please refrain from commenting on things you know nothing about.

Why even put in the (original) HDD and the disc drive? Could've saved a ton of space with those out

Use flash memory? I don't know about these things but it's probably possible to fool the system into thinking it has a disc drive and the original HDD

Doesn't need a benchmark, he didn't just throw in some random shit and go "yeah that'll do". It's all calculated before putting it all together, and with the APU heat censor and all that, the fans would have to work a bit harder but with the heatsink and intake/exhaust, it'd add up to roughly the same temperature. AND like he said, APU's are a lot less heat intensive than you'd expect, did you even watch the video??

I dont know if ya'll check the comments on older videos but I've had an idea that would be more of a long term thing. I've been wanting to make a pc desk for a few years, but also be able to play console games as most of my friends have Xbox or Playstation. I know that either one of those systems don't take up much room by themselves, and are only about as large as a large pc case, but i think it would be cool to have the pc desk with an Xbox and, or a PlayStation built inside of it as well. Like a dual monitor set-up for the Pc and a 40 or 50 inch T.V. for the console(s)
