Maurizio di stefano Xbot I hate to break this to you but the system was out since November. So there was plenty "out" you could find them everywhere since. Microsoft sent out more systems then there was demand for. Even in December you could go to any gamestop and find a leaning tower of xboxone's comprised of 10 or more xbox ones, go to the nearest gamestop besides that one and find the same EXACT thing, go to a bestbuy and you would see them stacked up by fives.

hes right i remember on black friday when i got my ps4 to resell there were 13 ps4s and 45 xbox ones in the back there were 50 something odd people waiting for ps4 and 2 waiting for xbox one (no one new there was only 13 but i was 3rd in line so i was good) 6 more bought a xbox one because they didnt feel like waiting in line for no reason

It's funny you say that sense every time I've bought a PlayStation with the exception of the psone, PS3 died after 2 years, ps4 died after 8 months, I'd say if Sony is experienced with hardware they definitely haven't learned from there mistakes like Microsoft has I'd say the original Xbox one is better built than any PlayStation I've owned, old fat Xbox one on its second power supply and going strong to this day, i was done with Sony after they released that God awful PS3 super slim after my PS3 original died, super slim didn't last 3 months and I said to hell with ps4 after it died 8 months, so Sony may be well versed when it comes to hardware but they don't give a shit when it comes to cutting corners, the super slim was as solid as 6 dollar toaster from Dollar General.

Mineral cooling for the xbox one is not practical. And the APU will not get hot enough to justify water cooling, not to mention trying to power it off the power supply

Having gone through 3 xbox 360's from red ring of death my current slim 360 halo reach edition has been running like a champ since I got it in 2010. I can see microsoft did a similar design on this one probably even beefing up the heatsink even more with solid copper and so forth so I'm thinking heat won't be an issue with the xbox one. I'm still amazed they sandwiched the original 360 gpu right under the dvd drive which led to so many problems but I'm glad to see they resolved it going overboard to be sure the XB1 don't have any overheating issues. I've had my ps4 since launch and still no issues with it even though the small case does concern me for the longterm reliability let's just hope sony knew what they were doing.

yh i think microsoft learnt from their mistake i mean it did take them a long time to sort out the red ring issue. i wouldnt worry about the ps4 reliability tbh. sony have been generally quite good with their consoles in the past in reliability terms. i mean the ps1 and ps2 were quite reliable and so was the ps3 even the old fat model with ylod. i mean the ylod issue wasnt that big when compared to the red ring issue and the ps3 slim and super slim are quite small also and they never had any overheating problems

Just finished watching the both the PS4 and XBOX ONE tear downs. It was very interesting to see the different build philosophies of each company. You can tell the PS4 was designed by the japanese because of the very efficient use of space, just like you can tell the XBOX ONE was designed by americans as it is very open like a pc tower. All in all very cool, but from what I saw I think the reason the PS4 is putting out better graphics is definitely cause of the DDR5 ram, both had very similar chip sets but that DDR5 allows for faster processing. I'm guessing MS picked DDR3 to keep costs down while still keeping kinect.

Or just build a PC with a HD 7850 (R7 260x) with a AMD 7700k and run diagnostic on that. About equivalent to the Xbone and PS4 if not better

Ben Zimmerman Well a r9 270 = 7870 so the 265 would be closer to a HD 7850. Do keep in mind developers could take more advantage of the hardware then on PC, but PC is still better :P

CYRRYANC97 270=7850. 270x=7870. 280=7950. 280x=7970. The ps4 is on par with a 260x in raw performance and fps numbers. Its essentially an under clocked and modified (dumbed down) 7870. The modifications bring it down to a 260x level. Developers can only do so much lol and theres no way to compare that anyway. Since the devs can modify the game beyond what the average pc player can change in the video settings.

Ben Zimmerman The 270 and 270x have the same GPU, same amount of Stream processors same memory bus and same amount of Vram, the only difference the 270x has a higher core clock and memory clock but it is not a big difference many 270 (non x) come pre overclocked passing a 270x. So the 270x is pointless to get unless you get it for cheap. The 7850 has less stream processors then a 7870 and a smaller memory bus. The PS4 has a GPU about as powerfull as a 7850 but game devs can take more advantage of the hardware which usually relates to longer life span on a console. So realistically a PS4 has the potential horse power as a 270/270x (maybe even a 280).

Notice the snakelike optical leads going to the ram modules, they all have to be the same length so thats why some have to travel a further distance so everything times correctly.

actually... it looks quite good for oem. Its grey, not white, which suggests it has decent heat transfer, also, it is still very gloopy here, which suggests it resists drying out. The ps4 on the other hand is bright white and already totally dry the day of purchase :/. I do agree that a good name brand paste would definately be better, for any preapplied oem paste.

interesting fact: those Samsung drives are actually stock from Seagate... you can tell from the Seagate website on the top of the drive label and the model number... the Seagate hard disks have an model number... for example, the 1TB Seagate Baracuda is ST1000DM003-1CH162., ST standing for Seagate Technology

The XBOne looks like a perfect candidate for a laptop mod. I'm excited to see what you come up with. I am really happy that the xbone has that kind of cooling. Do you know which fan the fan is blowing? The 360 Slim had a good heatsink, but the fan was blowing out of the case... not onto the processor. I had a friend with a slim that would have overheating issues with the 360 slim, due to it. I removed the fan, added a quiet 92mm fan that blew onto the processor instead of out of the case, and soldered it to the 12v line. You could feel the hot air blowing out of the top, and the heatsink was cool to the touch. He never had a lag issue since.

did you expect it to be round?hexagon shaped? Or in italics like the ps4? Plus That power brick saved my xbone once. Their was a bad storm that sent a power surge through my house. Everything went off. 5 mins later power came back and my Xbox was still on because of the reserve power in the brick. Nothing was corrupted nothing was affected, didn't even have to restart my system after losing all power. So how is that a bad design?

So those nice big fan clips break easy, I got an xbox recently that was dropped and 3 of 4 were broken. It hit the ground hard enough to bust the case open, bend the metal frame, rip the ribbon cable and the wireless Ariel cable off the front RF. I'm surprised the HDD survived though.

Ben, what did you do to remove all the thermal paste? I typically use a scraper and rubbing alcohol.

Don't use a scraper as you could scratch the surface. Usually, isopropyl and paper towels + qtips is enough.

I think both the standard computations and rendering computations are all done on the single APU. That's why he was being particular about calling it an Accelerated Processing Unit. Games developed for PCs actually have to assign certain operations to the GPU, otherwise all calculations are done on the CPU by default. I speculate that game engines usually have built in functionality to easily handle that stuff, so it's not something you normally hear about.

360's problem was using "pull" air flow solution, on a heatsink that ran extremely hot, when all logic dictates you want to blow AGAINST that too cool it off.

What's with the large number of capacitors on the board? I thought other consoles didn't have so many and so large capacitors on board. Especially considering the external power supply.

The APU, like all AMD processors, has an on-die northbridge. The second custom chip is the southbridge.

suggestion for the monitor Ben, take it apart and hook up a lvds (in most cases) adapter board, you can find them on eBay and amazon for around 30 bucks, and some even have multiple inputs that can be changed (think portable multi console).

how do people get the money to do tear downs on youtube for devices do you just waste the money to do it for fun or is a company sending them the device to do it for them? just a question i have been wondering.

From what I saw, the cooling system was pretty standard for any processing unit (a heatsink coupled with a fan), though it suffers from what most pre-built systems (be it a console or laptop) do, over-application of thermal grease. The heatsink is higher quality than what comes stock with a CPU, however.

Guitar picks, the best cheap spudgers or "splugers" I have ever found, you can spend $3 on a "real" spudger, or you can buy a pack of various thickness guitar picks for $10 and get a great deal more life out of them.

The white xbox one Slim.. the s that was just released not too long ago.. that is the original "VCR" version.
