It's really hard to appreciate the "gambit" on b5 because it looks really bad, but I'm sure that it made things more complicated and helped Ben get an advantage on time vs a less experienced opponent. Winning because of a blunder in time trouble is still winning!

...fxe6 and ...b5 are inconsistent with each other. Given that white castles long, Bxe6 puts the bishop on a nice attacking diagonal. Rather than a Pirc, this is now more like a Philidor, Larsen variation which plays like a Dragon Sicilian.
