Richie talked like the great Urdu poet, Mir Taqi Mir. His 'rough-ish' comment is basically adapted from one of the Mir's couplet's words; 'pakhiri ghulab si' and it's still one of the most bamboozling lines for the critics of Urdu literature to date as Mir is not likening his lover's lips to rose petals exactly instead he's likening it to something which is like rose petals. This 'si' of Mir is a remarkable stroke of genius.
