Thank you for doing the review on the knife. I've had mine now for half of a year and have learned to love the handle, but it does take getting used to. I like the side scallops on the handle. I think the handle, like I said, just takes getting used to. It's not bad, just different. Also, I've been watching your videos on my DVD player through it's KZbin program for a long time and rarely get on the PC like now. But I thought I'd comment on this video and chime in that I enjoy your videos a lot. One of my top 5 outdoors channels! Been on KZbin since the beginning and watch KZbin several hours daily and I have yet to find someone who has the knack at video reviews as you. God bless and please keep them coming!

Just got this knife, been wanting it for years. The handle looks weird until you hold it in your hand, very comfortable. Love it! don't get why everybody hates the color of the handle??? Hello! it's Green, the woods are Green, thought Bushcraft was all about simplistic back to nature?! are they looking for an obnoxious color like orange, yellow, red or blue that isn't a natural color in the woods??? like 99% of tents are nowadays. (sorry, sissy tent camper instead of tarps or( hammocks (Bear Pinata's). Sorry, my favorite color is Green, this knife is one in a million.

You are the first person to mention. The hey were lost as fuck we need everything to blaze city folk shit. Thanks man. Good to know I am finally not alone. Got mine in the 162-1 tan. Works for me. Save the day glow paint for the. We participated kids who were dropped off from the short bus. Yours truly a Blackhawk Crewchief. This knife fucking wins.

I cant skip the adds no more WOW! Great job brother Adam. You and this knife are the reason I fell in love with bushcraft. I made a pouch out of a tool belt for a bushcraft project. because I wasnt sure what bushcraft was I just seen your contest vid & was just getting into it so I thought I needed a pouch & I thought it was bushcraft lol. But what I got from that contest is better than any knife. So thank you now on to watch the video of the knife that started it all for me for the first time. Thanks again.

The handle really shines when you choke down and chop, and choke up for leverage.. it's really functional beauty.. I love everything about the knife. Like in love

Hey , had this knife for awhile and can tell you that the handle takes a little getting used to. The forward palm swell I think is designed for choking up on the blade while whittling. I love the steel, the shape and design of the blade and the fact that it is full tang. I can also attest to its sharpness as I had it on my bed and laid my foot wide open with it which took weeks to heal. Fun. Overall a good knife but the sheath is a joke. Would be great in kydex.

I just got the exact same knife for my birthday last week. I use Gerber Strongarm and it has a nice rubber grip. This Knife feels different. The handle feels slippery but I’m just not used to it yet. I used it with a farrow rod my Überleben rod . I used the back side of the blade to try it out it took a few times to get a spark, but after I did that I looked at the backside of the blade and it damaged it a little bit. It was nice and smooth with a smooth edge and now it has some bumps. You can feel the dent I guess you can say. It’s not smooth let’s put it that way so I won’t use it to make a fire.

Best production knife I've ever owned.. I will say it's more of a survival knife.. but I never grab any of my scandi ground " bushcraft" knives anymore... The knife is awesome.. the handle shape makes sense when you use it

Yes, absolutely the Benchmade 162 Bushcraft would make an excellent survival knife! I've had mine for a few weeks now, and love it. Yes, the handle takes a little getting used to, but it is super comfortable. The blade makes light work of slicing, chopping, splitting, and feathering. Not to mention the sparking ability with flint...Wow! The steal will last a lifetime and then some-You will be able to hand this knife down for generations and still function great. The sheath can be considered a draw back, but for me, its ok. Sure it would be better in kydex with a drain hole, but the leather will absorb moisture just as well and you don't have to worry about it freezing.

I have one, and I love the handle. My fingers touch the front and read guards, so from a tactical view, it works fine. It does not have jimping on the spine, however. The sheath is not to my liking, but that is a matter of taste, not function mostly. The balance is in the handle, true. From tactical view this is correct, from a chopping point--not so much. Like the handle, it depends upon the task. The S30V steel is a good blade and a thick spine. You can tell this knife is built to take abuse. I like mine quite well.

It's supposed to be a Bushcraft but the way it's build it's easily used as a survival knife. You just won't be able to chop logs in half. I agree about the handle and sheath.

I got this knife second hand (mint condition) for cheap. Too expensive for me at 180$. Nearly re-sold it just after getting it. It has a very unique handle form. As people have said it takes getting use to. I also got a knick in the edge while making some kindling on some bricks. I was easily able to get the edge back onto it just with some wet stones. So I dont agree that the edge is difficult to work with. Easy to get razor sharp. After using it a few months, I have adapted to the handle and I like it a lot. Very comfortable. Now I wont dare sell it

I went ahead and got this one. Perfect all around woods knife if you ask me. One of the few s30v fixed blades knives I could find. For me stainless is important since its humid up here in southern Canada and with the snow in winter, a high carbon blade would rust after a few days out. Since it would be a food prep knife as well, I dont want rust or coated blades. This knife along with a bk9 is for wood work is all you really need.

Adam, Honestly the most useful and helpful knife review I've ever seen. I was looking at buying this knife, mainly as a deer hunting knife but secondly as an all around woods/camping knife. Is there a knife you'd recommend over it (in the same price range)? I liked the weight and feel of this knife when I held it, and have a lot of faith in the S30V BenchMade blade, but you seem vastly more knowledgable than I so I'd like to check out any other recommendations before purchasing. Thanks!

I would have never thought Benchmade would ever dip their toes into the bushcraft knife market, but I must say their offering is a nice looking piece. I agree about the sheath. If it had a wooden or micarta handle it would fit the look, but not the G-10. I'm not so sure if I'll ever pick one of these up. That's a nifty trick with the tent peg, Adam. I've had to make tent pegs and I've had them come lose. I'll try that the next time to see how it works! Thanks for the tip. -Evan

One of my friends own this knife and on our canoe trip last week and I got to use it a little bit. In all honesty, I'm glad I don't own this knife. I'm into bushcraft and this knife as it is advertised as a bushcraft knife, any decent bushcrafter would stay the hell away from it IMO. I can see it used as a backup survival blade although it's a bit shorter. If you are into carving like I am, don't get this knife. My wrist was in pain after like only 20 mins with it and all I did was feather-sticking. Didn't even go into any detail carving like I always do. The design itself is very bad. It won't make any deep cuts because of its grind and shitty geometry. You won't feel any weight at the blade itself which makes it harder to control in a long carving process and also because of that it doesn't slice well. And don't even get me started on the sheath, it's an abomination, a big F.U to all decent sheath makers. It felt like I was cutting through it every time I was putting it in and out. SMH. Ok there's my rant for today.
@deanban
@deanban 10 жыл бұрын
Oh and also my friend chipped it a little and it was basically useless for the rest of that trip. He was carrying a dual water stone 1000/1600 I think and it didn't even scratch the blade. All I'm saying is if you carry a knife with that steel, you better be carrying a good diamond sharpener.
@ANGRYLUCAS
@ANGRYLUCAS 9 жыл бұрын
Did you break a nail as well? Lol I highly doubt it chipped and are you really complaining about the blade strength after saying it chipped? Doesn't add up and if anything did/does break benxhmade will replace it or fix it for free
@deanban
@deanban 9 жыл бұрын
Where did I complain about blade strength? All I said is that my friend chipped it which can happen to any steel. But metallurgy of this particular blade makes it extremely hard to fix in the field if you are carrying a simple water stone which he did. If you are a fan of super hard steel, more power to you. Personally I don't like it. And I think I know what chipping looks like since it happened to my blades once or twice.
@KLYang40

I disagree. Hard to believe it is that bad when you don't even own it. I love this knife. It feels great in the hand and have no issues with the weight even after multiple outings. If you have the money and want to treat yourself to a high quality knife, it is very good.
@ccwstraightshooter9761

Your just making shit up. No one believes your stupid made up story. I bet you couldn’t produce a picture of your chipped blade. Even if it did chip which is doubtful, any other bushcraft steel like 1095 or any other high carbon steel would have chipped way worse than S30V. S30V has a Rockwell hardness of 58-60.

I'd rather buy the Mora Bushcraft Black. Chopping doesn't really matter for a knife this size as using a baton to chop would be more effective. The Mora would only really fall short in edge retention being of 1095 but it is more ergonomic while still being robust enough for the kind of tasks expected out of such a knife. Not to mention at $36, the money you save can be used to put together a complete budget bush craft kit.

I love benchmade and the design of this knife is really good. Once I had it in my hand it made more sense to me based off of looks alone. However, I felt like the handle material and sheath design and material were lacking. Its as if they looked around the warehouse for what ever material they had the most of and said, "we'll use that up" It had benchmades fit and finish that we're used to, just the look of it is lacking to me. That being said, Im still keeping mind for collection purposes.

Hey Adam I see a lot of strong views here and to each his own. The sheath looks better after some snow seal beeswax is added and a little use. This is a first run so I think they are looking for input. They only made a few. Mine is 88 of 500. I like my Tops Fieldcraft knife better and the standard Mora companion cuts/bushcraft better, but I live on the Gulf Coast so the Stainless steel was the thought behind my purchase. Check out the Bench Made videos. The are like the Cold Steel vids.

Just wondering if the knife got some bad reviews, it seems to me it's not, and the price is growing, I guess I'm just lucky, my sheath fits the knife great, and again, mine is a first production run, I like it, now I have 9 great bushcraft knives, I have the Busse Son of Badger, John Bradley's "Worlds Best Camp Knife, Rod Garcias Skookum Bush Tool, the Sisu by Cold Steel, Gerber Freeman Stag in S30V, a G.E.K. custom knife, made out of saw steel, Bokor 4 " recurve in 440C, Blind Horse in 0-1, Benchmade #162, I still have hope for a Bushlore, and who knows what else comes along. Oh yeah, a Canadian Belt Knife, made in Germany, can remember whos, it's stag handle, but made out of carbon, so it's 10 now.

Yup the Benchmade Bushcrafter #162 hold's a very good edge retention, , the thickness makes it a strong knife like what Mors Kochanski refers to as a "Sharpened Prybar" anyhow not a tank but a very good sturdy knife, the lenght is over 4" to me that lenght makes it a nice versital blade lenght for what I do, the handle is comfortable and no problems here with me, I really like the Benchmade Bushcrafter #162 it became one of my fav's, I got #299 out of 500, everything is spot on on mine, yup defenetly I will recommand this knife, after using it more and more the more I like it.

Alright... This is a clone of Sibert's Cascadia knife. The handle shapes are identical, and Sibert has a reason for the design. You can google Benchmade 162 Rocky Mountain Blog, and read about the handle shape. It's not a grab and go for everyone, and once you read how it's meant to be used, it might make more sense. Basically, the large hump in the back is to secure the knife while chopping, and the large swell further up is for choking up on feathering, etc. It works for me, but it's certainly a different grip than usual.

The Benchmade Bushcrafter #162 is one of my 5 all time favorite knives they are my #162, Skookum J.B World Finest Camp Knife, C..S. SISU, and my favorite my Busse Son of Badger, I just got a Stromeng Buhku (LIL) STAK that I'm considering as a neck knife it's a ultra lite knife, but one of my go to sets is my Rodent 7 and my Rodent 4 and my newest Rodent 6 and the Rodent Solution my Rodent 9 and my Ratmandu are my big job knives for trios up North and other serious trips, I also use my new compact folding saw the Wicked Tough Saw made by Wicked Tree Gear and my Nessmuk Style Double Bit Hatchet made by 2Hawks, I really enjoy watching your video's again god job, be safe.

I am using Benchmades to fill combative roles, hunting roles, but I am still not seeing anything in their line up for real bush crafting.

There's nothing from cold steel that will ever compare to bench maid, just for the simple fact that bench maid makes their products in America and cold steel doesn't.

I was always pretty un-enthused about this knife. It's price point puts it in direct competition with Bark River, Fallkniven, Helle, Enzo, and Jacklore to name a few. What a disappointing offering from Benchmade!
