Say Heah Eugene, Years ago I bought my Benchmade Bushcrafter #162 when they first came out. I bought it from DLT, Jason surprised me with a First Production Run #299 out of 500. I bought it for $170.00 What's nice it's the very 1st. Production Run for this knife. Teaming it with my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet is a perfect match. I also add my Wicked Tough Saw which I can carry it in the open position which is very helpful when setting up. I recently added my C. S. Ultimate Hunter Folder and I always bring my Gerber Multi Tool when I use this set. A real complete set-up when I go on my Afternoon Delight's, Hikes and Harvesting Fatwood. I do use my 17" Hultafors Bruks Agdor Hatchet which I carry it in one of your Axe Holster's with this Knife. I also use my fast cutting EZ KUT WoW Folding Saw sometimes with this set. Regardless of which combo I go with our Benchmade Bushcrafter #162 is a great knife on its own. I totally understand why we like our #162. Oh, when I use this knife, sometimes I exchange my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet for my Bark River Golok, with the Ghost Green Jade G-10 Handle in A2. I use the Golok as my Summer Long Knife. It Chops, and Baton's great and it's Lite but a Awesome Chopper but still a great clearing Machete type tool in my Brambles Country. It actually color matches great too.,,.p

You mentioned that the knife was not "high carbon steel." It actually is high carbon (stainless) steel. Most of us know what you were trying to say, and my intention is not to call you out. Just clarifying for the people who are new to the qualities of steel and cutlery. S30V is about 1.45 % carbon versus about 1 % carbon for 1095 or O1 tool steel.

Say Heah Eugene, Yeah I remember when you first got your BM Bushcrafter #162, I have a 1st Production Run, it's one of my all time favorite bush craft knife, but this weekend I took my new Rodent 5 and the Rodent 3, so far I'm very pleased I didn't buy two knives that are reduntant with my Ratmandu and my Rodent Solution, the Rodent 3 is a tank and it looks like it will be my favorite 3" blade what a tank, fills my hand great and I wear a large glove, but I also brought my Blind Horse Bushcrafter instead of my BM Bushcrafter #162, the handle seems more familiar than the handle on the BM which is actually a good handle and when I use it alot it has great control and no hot spots on my hand, but the simplicity of my B.H. Bushcrafter I had the handle thinned down and polished, a very simple looking knife that actually looks great to me more classy with what I did to it, I think so, and preforms great, I also took my standby's my Wicked Tough Saw and my 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet, we're having a great time testing my knives, so I got to go before the battery is used up, Thanx for sharing one of my Fav's.

The dangler is a must have for this knife, without it, it rides real high and interferes with my pack and hard to deploy. I bought one from JRE leather but I didn't like the fact that I had to take my belt off every time to slide the sheath in. Yours has at least a button where I can detach it from my belt without having to take my belt off. Would be better of it was a snap closure instead of the button. I ordered mine today from Amazon, too bad I didn't see your review earlier. I would've gotten that instead of the JRE leather version.

It's pricey, but well worth the dough if you can afford to spend a bit more on a good bush knife. I just now (yesterday, 4-2-18) lucked out and won a bid on eBay for a pre-owned one in new condition (unused/unsharpened). Winning bid: $150.50 USD. I'm very much looking forward to receiving it.

Hi, for bushcraft knives to be used in long trips in nature I rack meals on well-treated 440c steel and fairly easy to sharpen or this S30VN steel longer durable but harder to sharpen? let me know what you think, thanks to Michele.
@johnnyconner41846 жыл бұрын
Michele Trekkning -- I always hear people say that you need a bush knife that's made of high carbon tool steel because many of the other (stainless) alloys are too tough to put an edge on in the bush. But look... just carry a small diamond hone on your belt or in your pack, and you can take it from dull-as-a-butter-knife, to razor sharp again in no time. The most popular opinion is not always best for you. For example, I never baton wood with my knife. I've never had a need to. I gather all the fire making materials that are readily available in wooded areas and have a roaring fire going very quickly, even in wet conditions. If I need larger logs, I use my folding saw and my hatchet. I always be sure to go into the bush fully prepared, with the proper tools for the job at hand, and I never fail to have a blast, either alone, or with a friend. Self reliance is becoming a lost art in this modern age, and that's just a shame.

The plastic insert is the worst part of the sheath. Take it out and you're good, as it doesn't really protect the seams and always makes it difficult to put it back in. But the knife itself is really excellent.

Good review. It's funny how everyone seems to find these nice little saw cut pieces of wood lying around everywhere... See it's funny, but where I come from, when I'm in the woods, the only wood I'm gonna find is not gonna have those nice fancy little saw cut ends... More than likely it's either going to be wood I found on the ground, pushed over a dead standing tree, or broke dead branches from a tree. And it's these pieces of wood that I would have to baton... Because if you have the saw, then there is no need to baton in the first place. KZbin "how to split wood with a saw". Anyways, nothing against your review; I did like it. I just get a kick out of how everyone always seems to demonstrate a knives battening abilites on nice prissy little saw cut pieces of wood and not the type of pieces one would ACTUALLY be using in the wild to save themselves.

@@ReviewOutdoorGear *Good review!* but I think the upcoming Benchmade 200 Puukko is better than the Benchmade Bushcrafter 162 because: - for Winter the new 200 Puukko has a full enclosed tang. So there will be no metal burns or a very cold handle to hold. - also the puukko's handle shape is more comfortable & shape allows more bushcrating techniques. - the price is $123 USD, which is much cheaper. - being a puukko it is well balanced. - the Benchmade 200 Puukko's black leather sheath is much better than the ugly shape & buckskin material of the Bushcrafter 162. Please check it out.

Paul Anton -- Did you ever get a new bush knife?
@bfboobie3 жыл бұрын
Just a heads up, the leather sheath that comes with this BM 162 looks nice, but at least on mine, the snap on the retention strap is weak, and the knife has fallen out of the sheath multiple times when I've been sitting or walking. Almost lost the knife because of this, more than once. This is my favorite fixed blade knife, but desperately need to solve this untrustworthy sheath problem somehow. For comparison Ive owned several Buck 119, both the older nylon-weave and the standard leather sheaths, and they never unsnap inadvertently like the Benchmade 162 sheath...
@fjellboi23913 жыл бұрын
@@bfboobie I actually bought the knife and have owned it for 4 years now! The sheath isnt that great, as the knife sits too loosely in it. I do like the edges retention of the steel, but the grind is too difficult to sharpen in the field. I therefore use a Mora Garberg now... quality knife for a good price and easy to sharpen in the field.
@bfboobie3 жыл бұрын
@@fjellboi2391 i read a lot of good stuff about the Garberg. Never sure if its cause more people use it because its more affordable than the BM162, or if it's just that good. you say it's easier to field sharpen the garberg than the 162.. thats a good point. The BM has really good steel the cpmS30V tho

@@bfboobie The steel is amazing and it hardly has to be sharpened. The big but for me is that I wanna use an affordable workhorse of a kinfe that i can sharpen with a mini whetstone in the field. You don't know bleep about a knife until after you put it through the wringer. The handle has hot spots for most people. The blade is hard to push cut through wood even when hair poping sharp. The saber grind just doesn't work out on this beast to get you the most work done for the least time and effort spent. Rust resistant and tank tough? Yes. Kind of short in my opinion for a froe and I prefer a square tip on them. You can get a Buck froe for a lot less than this knife. Each to their own.

I just got this knife and instantly changed the sheath. This is the worst design I have ever seen in my life. The button snap is loose and opens up with the slightest touch. Walking through the bush and anything that you brush against will open that button snap and you will lose the knife so I changed it.
