Do you have any tips on how to center the 940? I have the aluminum scale version and it's pretty new, but the blade is slightly centered to the left. It really bugs me as it's the most expensive knife I have. Thanks!

I sent my grip in to be serviced and I didn't want my clip replaced. I love the worn scratched up look on it. How ever. At some point in carry. My clip got cought on something and got bent up. So I took it off and bent it down. But after I got it back. It looks like the perfect shape again. I wonder if they fixed that too

I am thinking hard about what benchmade to get and I believe I have come down to ... well, 4. That is a lot still but here are the ones I am looking at. 943, 950 in the orange from Cutlery shoppe, the 707 and the 530 benchmade. My biggest concern is that it is a fun knife. All of them are axis lock so I should be fairly covered. Any suggestions or recommendations between them?

Michael Reed any benchmade is a quality product and out of the ones you said I am personally a fan of the 943 (would still take the 940 over it, i like them so much I have 2 the green 940 pictured in the video and the 940-1 carbon fiber variant). If you're feeling open minded SOG offers something very similar in their "Vulcan" models and for the longest time I've sworn by them but getting back to your question if you're mind is made up I would say the 943 or even just the 940.

Maverick Gerber SOG is on my "after benchmade" list. The Vulcan and the Vision 2 is the two I am looking at the hardest. Thanks for the advice on the Benchmades. I have a bit of time due to having picked up a black blade Para 2 camo. It is everything everyone is saying. It has been such a good blade, that I can take my time getting exactly what I want for the next one. I am thinking it must be the 943.

It's nice to see someone illustrate their mistakes for us to learn from. Most of these review goons have their heads so deep into the rectum, and couldn't possibly be wrong or make a mistake... It's really nice to see an honest vid without all the ego-stroking. You have made a fan out of me sir...

Ouch... I slammed my heel into one of those stupibly designed giant metal pointy corners on my bed frame today if that makes you feel any better... The worst part is that this has happened before, on several bed frames, and this one was purchased recently... I don't learn well :(

@@TheApostleP I still got that Emerson with your DNA soiled all up in it.. I was going to have you sent to China to be cloned but they didn’t offer a lay-a-way plan, point of that was so you would be bilingual when I got you back, then the more I thought about it and your feelings on China Town I just didn’t have the heart to do you that way … HA !!

Well my friend I felt as little sick hearing your story & I too have had projects that didn't work out. Glad you had some time to step away & re-approach the 940. Sounds like the Benchmade spa treatment will make it better than ever! Very cool to get your channel name etched on it. I believe the new & improved 940 will become the fav for you that it has for me.

Thank you for sharing your story. Quick comment; just in case you've not considered, many knives have a similar "closing stop" using that same portion of the knife-blade, the ricasso, (liner-locks, compression-locks, frame-locks, axis-locks, etc). Spyderco Para & Military for example use the stop-pin as both an open-lock-stop and a closing-lock-stop. Others, like some ZT's for example, use the thumb-stud against the lock-bar (300-series frame & liner-locks, etc.), so opening up the scale for a "left-hander" to more easily thumb-flip could have similar disastrous results. Thanks again for sharing.

Why buy a $150 pocket knife and then take it part to change the grind? Why not just buy a knife with the grind that you desire? Why not buy one with the clip you want? Just asking?
@airtioteclint

Because the knife he likes doesn't come with the grind and clip he likes?
@colinohare9837
@colinohare9837 5 жыл бұрын
Because pocket clip and grind are two easy modifications to make, whereas blade profile, quality construction, lock type, steel type, handle material, and warranty are all difficult/impossible to modify and can’t be found together in other production knives. Custom knives are the only knives that will meet all of your desired specifications and are very expensive as a result.

Hey, Rob. A thought on your channel & its playlists. I tried looking to find a video with this knife's replacement blade but being 3+ years old I got tired of scrolling! Maybe you could organize by brand the videos where it's just one knife. Just a thought. Keep up the great videos! Ordered my 940-1 from KSF - can't wait!

You are one of my sharpening and tinkering mentors Mr. Rob, thank you for all the videos, very helpful especially with the Edge Pro learning curve, that I am still on! I just cannot figure out why you ground on the choil. Was it just for looks?
@TheApostleP
@TheApostleP 9 жыл бұрын
Jay Culley Absolutely not for looks. On many 940's (and countless other knives) the plunge grind isn't finished before the factory choil ends. So when you sharpen it on the Edgepro or any other good flat stone, one of two things happens. Either your edge will flare notceably at the base, due to the thicker material there, or you'll develop a recurve about an inch forward of the ricasso, because that thicker material at the base will cock the stone and the leading edge will dig in. My ricasso mod is designed to get past the plunge grind for better edge consistency.
@jculley6
@jculley6 9 жыл бұрын
+TheApostleP the recurve is what I was thinking, that has happened to me. Makes perfect sense. Your edges are absolute art. I am to the point where I can get a good mirror polish but not nearly as consistent as yours.

I guess my "great deal" on the purchase price will turn into an OK deal when all is said and done. It did sort of wreck my Sunday evening though... if hearing my story made you a little sick, you can imagine how I felt, especially since I thought I knew what I was doing the whole time! I literally didn't have a clue I had ruined the knife in the first 15 minutes I was working on it until 3 hours later. I had it all done, all clean and lubed. I was ready to admire my work... SMACK!

Hi Rob, your candour is a welcome relief in this modern world where so few of us seem to be willing to admit our failings. It was an easy mistake that most of us would have made for sure. Fortunately you made us a great video so we can avoid such future anguish. Unrelated comment, I had a chat with God today after many years of silence. Keep up the good work mate :-)

Benchmade does have great service, 'cause that's how we roll here in Oregon! They are especially accommodating when the person they are dealing with really knows knives. I'm proud of you that you shared your fail with us. Lesser men would have embellished the story later about how they discovered a flaw, and got in contact with Benchmade and strong armed them to fix it. Also glad you stepped away from it so a good solution would present it's self. I'd have pressed on 'til it was a total loss.
@TheApostleP
@TheApostleP 11 жыл бұрын
Exactly right, Chris. Benchmade's customer service system is pretty awesome. This is definitely not a warranty situation, which makes what they do even cooler. They realize that guys actually use their knives, sometimes abuse them and hurt them, but Benchmade has a program in place by which we can bring those damaged knives back to new condition without shelling out for a new knife. That makes the initial investment for a Benchmade product all the more worth it :)

That is a bit of a tough one, I think. As I perused Benchmade's Warranty/Lifesharp pages, I believe I read that their $25 blade replacement policy requires the same model number blade to be installed as originally came in the knife. This service is primarily designed for replacement of broken blades not caused by a defect (warranty issue). They might do a plain edge for a serrated edge of the same model, but I don't know that for sure. You'll have to call Benchmade and beg :)

Yeah... I should have seen it coming. The sad thing is that most 940's need to have this operation done, albeit correctly. The edge is so straight, it's just a crime to leave the base of it all jacked up and flared out. I don't know why, since the notch is already there, Benchmade doesn't grind these knives correctly, with the plunge grind ending before the notch ends. Grrr!!! I have seen some that do, btw, which tells me it's a production problem, with operators not dressing their wheels.

I sure hope so, biguy :). I'm going to spend about $41 all told with postage and egraving, which is ok when I consider what I paid for the knife originally, and the clip is something I would have bought anyway. So if I have to spend that to make the 940 exactly like I wanted it, and fix my mistake at the same time, I'll count that as a pretty cheap lesson :)
