So I do own this knife and I very much enjoy carrying it, especially in gym shorts where I try to go as light as possible just to be comfortable. However, you are 100% right about the price and it completely overshadows any positive aspect that the knife might have. I bought this second-hand for about $300 and for that price I am not upset with the purchase. The thing that I think you have the most valid point on though, is that whilst a knife doesn't HAVE to have a purpose (it can be cool just for the sake of being cool), it has to be at least worth the value that the company is asking for it, and that's gotta be true for every knife from 20 bucks to 2000... or the person has to really, really want the thing. There are ton of overbuilt knives where people could argue that those don't have a purpose either, but you can feel the value - they're made of premium materials and have way more material involved than something like the Narrows. I would be curious to hear a CNC machinist chime in here and give a potential breakdown of this thing because it's the only place where I could see that extra $200ish dollars coming into play.

Exactly. If you get a custom Bugout with titanium scales & S90V it's $440 on the Benchmade site with no discounts. Honestly the price at this range isn't crazy at all.

I own the “Barnes” James brand knife that was referred to in the video. I don’t own a Narrows, but I have handled one and was considering getting one up to that point. FWIW the Barnes is an awesome knife! I got 15% off from their site and paid 550.00 which is too much for a knife that is not custom or at least mid tech in my opinion. However I wanted an integral knife and I am a titanium fan too, so when I got the discount I pulled the trigger. After 1 year of carrying the Barnes it has become one of my of my very favorite knives. It has a glassy smooth action, fantastic milling, and the heat treat on the m390 is some of the stickiest I have EVER experienced. It is also my only Chinese (Reate) knife and I was little ashamed that I bought it. But not now. I have an XM 18, and Umnumzaan, and a 247 wayfarer and it is every bit as good as any of those. As for the Narrows I found it sooo thin that it seemed uncomfortable in hand under even moderate usage.

Maybe even see if they have someone who will answer a few questions who is in charge of approving a models MSRP and what factors they consider to determine a specific models MSRP. Those kind of company's usually always have reps who would have no problem answering questions about their company. Say your just doing research for a documentary about knives and their history. The bugout as a product is objectively the best EDC for most people. It loses its edge when we compare the value proposition vs competition. But.. THIS knife has NO value proposition...
@hificat1015 ай бұрын
I have probably 125+ folding knives, and the Bugout is beyond any doubt one of the two or 3 worst knives I have. It's a $170 plastic handled knife that is objectively inferior in virtually every way except blade steel, to a $50 Vosteed Racoon. The factory edge on mine came barely sharp enough to cut paper. The blade came off center, and the action on the knife is terrible. I've probably got 10 hours into disassembling it and oh so carefully polishing the washers to a high sheen with Simichrome, then carefully cleaning them, and reinstalling them. Hours and hours into flicking it open and closed, open and close. Nothing (nothing) will make the blade on this chincy knife drop shut like the fully centered, razor sharp out of the box blade on a $50 Vosteed Racoon. If I had to place a fair value on the knife, I'd say $75 rather than $170. And like almost anyone that paid well over 100% too much for something, and spending 10+ hours just trying to make it function properly, I'm not happy. Benchmade can go to hell, and they can go without another penny of my money.

The narrows and the newly released 710 are proof to me that benchmade knows their omega springs suck. I believe it is in their best interest to redesign all their models to take the flat omega style spring from new 710 and not up the cost. The axis lock used to be the thing that differentiated benchmade from everyone else. They need to use the flat springs to make them stand above the rest of the crossbar locks. I have no interest in buying another benchmade until they release another model with the flat omega springs. I’ve had too many omega springs on my 940 break to have any trust in the knife. Other brands do crossbar locks better than benchmade for less and, arguably better quality.

I've never seen a positive review of this knife from someone who paid full price.

Dude I bought a full Diamond titanium Kunwu Padre with Vanax Super Clean steel for $269. Don’t tell me this knife can’t sell for $269. I know it’s American made but the parts can’t possibly cost anywhere near a Padre.
