Thanks for confirming this: 3:13 lifting the board over the wave breaks, then paddling out and pressing down 5:00. Not a sailor myself, but there's something satisfying about hearing my 9'4" round-nose hit the waves, like the hull of a sailboat. The "Superman" is kinda fun! The few times I've tried a turtle roll, though, I had a hard time holding on to the board or rolling back on top in time before the next wave. Duck dives or piercing the waves are also tricky. Although I get excited for big swells, I've learned 3-5' is challenging for me, esp. b/c it means a harder time paddling out and a crowded lineup. While the LB pintail w/2+1 fins can maybe handle big waves, I'm most comfortable as a novice in 1-2' w/the single fin, esp. when everyone else has decided it's not worth paddling out. Those have been my best days.

With a Turtle-Roll I don't wait until the water is of my face, I directly start to paddle blindly for some seconds towards the line-up. And when a bomb is coming I mostly paddle fully towards it. AlsoI always grab the board by the nose. I live in France and we don't have so much smaller days.

I’m 60 now and have always used a longboard. I’ve got a pretty good turtle roll but never tried duck diving. Thanks for the tips on how to on a long board which I’ll try next time out at Llangenith on the Gower.

Learned that during duck dive, we should move our body back over the knee. I just figured a long board has too much volume to do a duck dive. Will have to try. Thanks Ben!

My top tip for the turtle roll is to push the board away from you while you are upside down and the wave is passing over. Although counterintuitive this can reduce arm fatigue and make the board surface quicker allowing a quicker roll back onto the deck. The wave will already be pushing down on the board as it passes over so trying to pull it further towards you wastes energy. Give it a go🏄‍♂️💥

YES, please do the video on surfing and getting out in bigger waves. One thing I really struggle with is a wave breaking EXACTLY where I will be or really JUST in front of me. This means the white water is exploding right there and I feel like I won't be able to hold the board turtle rolling. What to do? I am talking specifically about bigger waves as I know I can just push through in smaller ones. But I mean big, heavy exploding white water. Also, I was told by a very good longboarder that another option is to tuck the board under my arms by the nose (kinda like a sideway hug) and then hold the nose with the other arm. I have seen my friend using this in quite big white water as well. He says it's safer for the shoulders. What do you think?

I like it second paragraph comment. My question is are u walking the board out holding the nose?? I'm an older dude so I took advice to walk the board out as far as I can which I figured out to to hold the nose on either side which I now wax to the top of the rails on each side for better grip. Works for turtle roll grip too. Walking out does save me a lot of energy 🤙

I can't duck dive a 9.2 board but I learned that turtle roll still works with 6-8ft waves. I just need to hold the nose and pull it down. It works 9/10 times

I learned how to force the Nose Under the wave, in Big Waves on Maui with a 8'0" funboard (It's what I liked to ride at the time). Occasionally, I would find Little Bruises on the Inside of My Arm, and I knew it was intense. I was grabbing the rails THAT hard with My Whole arms, wrapping em around the nose and grabbing my hands together under the board. So as to NOT lose the board. Boards can break if One lets em go in Big Surf, Or risks a Broken Leash in Huge Surf. Bad Scene to lose Your Floatation device..!

Hello Ben. This video was really what I needed. I have been practicing longboard duck dives for a while, but it is difficult to put the board into the water. I wonder if the board's buoyancy is too much for me to duck dive, or if I just don't have the skills😂 (60kg/9.4ft, 70~80L). I wish there was a video of practicing duck diving in the water.

Duckdiving is the best, tilting the board is a very good idea, but won't lifting your leg drag you back with the force of the white water ? What is the purpose ? You compensate the lenght of the board adding weight leverage ?

Thanks for this Ben, really helpful as I’m just learning turtle roll. I’ve found that when holding the middle of the board in more powerful waves, the whitewater can catch under the nose and rip it out of my hands. I had taken to holding nearer the nose to try to stop this but you specifically say to hold in the middle. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? Maybe rolling too late?

The timing to use turtle roll and shooting over techniques? Use Shooting through techniques when wave form a curve shape and near breaking in front of you? (I tried to use turtle roll for this situation, but most of time it doesn’t work) and i saw most shot-boarder use duck dive in this situation Use Turtle roll when the wave become white water

@@BenConsidine Thanks for the replies :) In this case I meant if you were not riding the wave but instead paddling out and the set broke a few meter in front of you. I know I'd check behind me and just ditch and dive (and hope the leash would hold)

Its fine when waves ate two foot high but once it gets bigger than that its a different story altogether. Im surfing in Bali at Kuta beach, the waves are very powerful indeed even when small and easily rip the board from your hands. Same with duck diving, cant get deep enough and just get smashed around with the board. Best thing Ive tried is ditching the board and swimming under the wave but the pull on my ankle from the leash has caused traumatic injury. Many people make paddling out look easy but its difficult to get techniques that work. Also what to do when your in deep white water and getting thrown around, what position to adopt?
