Next in my quest of Mastodon Leviathan full album guitar covers, Aqua Dementia!!! Easily one of my favorite Mastodon songs of all time. I love the nasty, thrashy verses, the crazy hybrid picked intro, the doom ending, and of course Scott Kelly (of Neurosis) dominating some vocals. So sick.
Playing my heavily-modded and swirled Ibanez RG470 with the wonderful Dimarzio Titan in the bridge. I guess a lot of people are perceiving this pickup as being a primarily "djent" kind of thing, but its capable of SO much more! Really one of the best pickups i've ever used.
Amp is my Kemper Profiler, using an Amp Factory Marshall JCM800 Drive profile that i modded to sound basically exactly like the album tone.
Strings are Ernie Ball M Steels, 10-52, and they've been on the guitar for about 8-9 months now... and they STILL sound new! Incredible strings.

Jeezus, dude. You are really good at playing different styles. I'm trying to learn all of Leviathan too. Got several songs figured out (played much more sloppy than you though) but I CANNOT hybrid pick for shit. So that automatically keeps me from being able to play certain parts...like this songs intro, the awesome country lick in Megalodon, etc. Also my arpeggios are crappy. Mastodon songs are loaded with arpeggios. Maybe I should just stick to playing easy-ass Tool songs and my own mediocre originals! Lol

well, that was fucking awesome. great playing, amazing tone, and one of my favourite songs. the ending is just awesome. how do you get the 52 tuned to A to behave? i always end up with a much fatter string to get a usable tension but i don't get much bite out of it for higher gain stuff.

\m/ awesome Ben! Cripes, what strings do you have to run to tune that damn low? I just put a set of D'Addario NYXL 11-56 on, and they're a bit loose at C-standard. But A!? Also, even if Hinds hates metal, Mastodon friggin OWNS.

Ben Eller Gotta love Ibanez and Floyd Roses. I have my S470 in drop B with M-Steel 10's. No problems. IMO finesse works better than a heavy hand on these style of guitars. My Gibson, totally(not really) different.

I really don't know how you can play in A with a 52 low E ! Does your guitar have a longer scale lenght ? On mine it's barely playable with a 54.... :) Thanks again for your intro lesson, this is gold.

its all in the touch!!! Mastodon used to use a 52 on their Les Pauls live for ALL their tunings. All the old Meshuggah and Fear Factory 7 string stuff was like a 52 in B, Bb, or A tunings. Crazy huh?

Thanks for taking time to answer, yes I heard Bill in a video saying he put 10-52 sets on all his guitars. More recently he said he used a 54 in C and a 56 in A. In my case the string hardly stays in tune and I generate buzz by strumming too hard with the right hand even when I try not to !

The chords in that last section sound great and absolutely brilliant (because they are) BUT I've watched them play this song a lot here on KZbin and at one point Bill is doing a kind of suspended chord stretch that you don't do here.
