Interesting insights on the fartleks which really emphasize hard days being hard. 95% effort is tremendously hard. Definitely recovery is important after that many rounds especially on hilly terrain.

Very cool experience. Thanks for the breakdown and insights. The Kenyan approach is so interesting compared to the typical solo training that most of us casual runners undertake. Gonna look for groups to train with.

Thank you for sharing this amazing experience. I am the base building phase for 2023 and I like that 3 week rotation of fartleks. Will incorporate starting next week as this is a down week. The train in Kenya experience is officially on my list and would be amazing trip as a first on the continent.

Hey Ben, enjoying the content! Btw you should get some glasses retainers for your glasses, save you pushing them up your head every 10 seconds 😆They don't look cool but my god makes running with glasses so much better.

All sounds like how club running was in the 70's 80's. Fartlek 9/10 miles in groups of 10-15 of similar abilities on Tuesday & Thursday. Enormous multi level group on Sunday of 12 to 20miles run in the woods or across fields with as much off road as possible - last 5miles were every man for himself as fast as you could manage. Loads of hills in those. All year round.

Hi @Ben Is Running, great series, and thanks for sharing the lessons. You mentioned that many athletes would push to stay with the front group until they couldn't. I'm curious what happens when they snap? Say an athlete goes to the well to stay with a group and is hitting maximum exertion on the 8th or 9th pick-up of 13. On the next pick-up they simply cannot physically stay with the group. Is their session over? Are they slowing drastically? What is their response? In my own training, I also push hard to stay with the front group, but I find that I sometimes fade quickly in the later stages of a workout or even end the workout early as a result. Would be great to hear your thoughts on this!

Interesting about how they build, and blow up in workouts as they try to keep up with the main group. I think that is applicable for younger runners too HS, etc.

A “Fartlek” is an unstructured “speed play”. The intervals are of random lengths and paces. This is simply an interval session. The only thing Kenyan about it is that it was run in Kenya. Still, kudos for hitting a decent pace although not yet acclimatised properly. This would be easy for you back in the UK.
@DutchThailandRunner
@DutchThailandRunner Жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same. A real fartlek is something completely different. And for myself when I dont run at the track I run almost every time in minutes and not in distance. My focus is than more at my effort than to think how far I still have to run... something like that!
