Bengali Bhoger khichuri/Khichdi stirs up many memories for a Bengali. It is typically offered to Maa Durga during Durga Puja. Prepared with rice and moong dal, learn how to make this no-onion, no-garlic festive khichdi in Ananya's kitchen and let us know what you think!

Ingredients
 1 Bay leaves
 3-4 Cardamom
 1 Cinnamon
 2 tbs grated coconut
 2 tsp Cumin seeds
 1 tbs turmeric powder
 1 tbs chilli powder
 1 cup mixed vegetables
 1 dried chilli
 1 tsp ginger paste
 1 tsp sugar
 2 tsp Ghee
 4 green chillies
 1 cup Gobindobhog rice
 1 cup dry roasted mug dal
 2tbs Mustard oil
 Salt to taste
Method
1. Soak the rice and dry roasted dal in water separately.
2. Heat the mustard oil in a pan.
3. Add the aromatics in the oil; bay leaves, cardamom, cinnamon and cumin
seeds.
4. Add the dried red chillies and grated coconut.
5. Add the green chillies and fry.
6. Add the roasted dal.
7. Add the cut vegetables.
8. Add turmeric powder, ginger paste, chilli powder and mix.
9. Add the rice.
10. Add water and let it boil until the vegetables and the dal melt.
Tip: Make sure the amount of water should be three times the amount of
rice and dal.
11. After the preparation is done finish it off with the ghee, garam masala, and
a little bit of garam masala for aroma. Add salt and sugar.
Tip: Add sugar in the end when boiling anything.

Thank you!!! As a Bengali living in the US, I miss Kolkata, especially during Durga puja. Got together with a Nepali friend and we will celebrate Dashain and Durga Puja together, with khasi ko masu, and bhoger khichuri. A bit of nepali, and a bit of bengali. Thank you again for this wonderful, easy recipe. You made my durga puja that much more nostalgic.

Thank you so much. I just celebrated Saraswati Puja at home, and made the bhoger khichudi. Even my non-Bengali friends loved it. A tip - The same utensil on which you make payesh can be used for making the bhoger khichudi. It adds a special flavour.

In West Bengal and neighboring regions, Bhog is commonly distributed in major festivals like the Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Saraswati Puja and other community poojas. It is commonly served in large temple complexes. The bhog is a blessed food that doubles up as a complete meal as opposed to prasad, which in West Bengal, would be in smaller quantity and would not be intended to be a meal. A most common form of bhog is in the form of Khichdi, served with a semi dry vegetable preparation, sweet tomato chutney and payesh (kheer), which is a rice pudding. This is typically served on flat plates of leaves of Sal (tree) joined with small twigs, all of which are then discarded.

this recipe is so aunthetic!I made it in a large quantity for my griha prabesh and it was fabulous. just made it again for saraswati pujo with panch meshali sobji.aikdom phataphati. ananya di, I think joto bar banai apnake onek blessings di. coincidentally I only make it for pujas etc so I cannot taste salt or anything still it comes out perfect! many many thanks!

Putting rice and dal together mostly results in undercooked dal and overcooked rice in the khichuri. i learnt to start with the dal first and then add rice 5-10 minutes later.
