I agree. I know Luke specified "Your real mother", but perhaps Bail Organna married again, and Leia had no idea he was referring to their birth mother.
@TheHiddenStudios8 жыл бұрын
It doesn't really matter what Lucas originally had in mind, as long as it can be explained in retrospect, which thankfully it can when you interpret her as talking about her adoptive mother, believing she was her real mother. I mean, George Lucas didn't originally plan for Vader to be Luke's father, or for Vader and Anakin to be the same person, or for Luke and Leia to be siblings, and you can kinda tell- for example, Obi Wan calls Vader "Darth" in their duel, as though it's genuinely meant to be his first name. And the whole deal with Obi Wan's story to Luke about his father being "true from a certain point of view" is clearly bullshit too, but the explanations are sufficient enough so I'm not really bothered by lines like this.

In many ways, Luke resembles his mother Padme more than his father Anakin. It is fascinating to note that at this point in the saga, after Anakin's true identity is revealed to him, Luke starts to unconsciously take on the role of his mother and show curiosity about her. In reality, they resemble each other in their outlook and personalities. "There is still good in him."

@@maxfrankow1238 The issue with it is that nobody wanted to pick up 30 years later to see Luke as a beaten down Jedi in exile. We already saw that with Obi Wan and Yoda. And with the attitude Luke has at his core, I don't buy it in the slightest. This movie ends with an overwhelming feeling of hope and optimism. Luke is a mature, noble, powerful Jedi Knight on his way to rebuilding the jedi order, and he clearly has the guidance of Yoda Obi Wan and Anakin in the afterlife. The sequels giving us a new Empire, a new Vader, and the jedi being nearly extinct again is just so lame. There are a million other more interesting directions they could have taken Luke as a character and the sequel trilogy as a whole. The movies could have depicted Luke and the jedi thriving all those years later. It could be an exploration into what the jedi truly are, what Luke's training for them is like. The jedi are still so mysterious all these years later, even the prequels barely touched on their lifestyles and the process of becoming one.

@@F3rn4nd0S1lv4 Anakin really wasn't the best dude, let alone in the galaxy. But I think the pressure of everyone trying to put all that on him, of trying to make him some paragon of the Force instead of just a kid who grew up in messed-up circumstances and needed love and support, is what really started to turn him. Though he did choose to go Darkside. I think what Luke senses is that Vader still has the ability to choose to turn back and become Anakin again, with the right motivation of unconditional love from his son.

I like Carrie Fisher's delivery in these scenes. It feels so childlike and helpless, which is exactly how you would feel after such a series of revelations. Jake Rittlinger No offense taken, mate. I've heard a lot of fans complain that Leia is a robot with no emotion and an example they give is that she never seems phased by the revelation that Darth Vader is her father. However in this scene, she is clearly upset over the fact. The only way I can see fans over-looking this is if they thought Leia was upset in this scene over Luke being her brother rather than Vader being her father.

MissMismagius Wrong again. Luke told her that Vader is his father, then telling her that she’s his sister. With a bit of thinking, she can easily find out that Vader is also her father. This scene was pivotal to why so many people reacted so negatively to the Last Jedi. In this scene the reason we love Luke is that he never gives up on his father in spite of everything he's done. Yet we are supposed to accept that decades later he not only had a moment of weakness with Ben (which in isolation I can grant) but that he basically gave up on him entirely after that and let him wreak havoc on the galaxy. However IMO this scene also reflects negatively on Leia. You mean to tell me that here, after silently endorsing Luke's hope to bring his father back to the light, in TLJ she too gives up on her son before the end of episode 8? In hindsight, the actions of both Skywalkers seem completely out of character however at least Han Solos legacy becomes even stronger; by comparison he knew what his son had become and yet he still went to try and bring him home because he believed in him and loved him; even as the blade went through him he touched his sons face because he LOVED him. Padme, on her deathbed, despite Anakin choking her with the galaxy in smokes and knowing her husband killed younglings, still loves him and believes in his goodness. Luke and Leia, in ROTJ, despite everything Vader has done to them and their friends, still believe in his goodness. Han, in TFA, despite all his son had done, still loves him and believes in his goodness. What the hell happened to Luke and Leia in TLJ??? What a mess.

Ehm, Couldn’t it be she was talking about Bail Organa’s wife?
@TheRivrPrncess2 жыл бұрын
No. The prequels did not need to leave Padme alive longer. Scientists say a human baby can hear the mother's voice in the womb and that is why it responds to her voice when born. Leia had force powers she didn't recognize and they were likely in use before and after her birth so she could sense her mother before birth. And when born, she had her eyes open so she could see her mother, hear her and sense her feelings, her sadness. Luke had his eyes closed, so he does not remember his mother and quite likely Owen and Beru did not mention her much in the same way they did not talk much about his father.

This has always been one of my favorite scenes in “Return of the Jedi” and Star Wars in general. It’s emotional because of the dialogue, but also because of the way these characters really show who they are now that so much has changed. Mainly, it’s successful because of the way Mark Hamill evokes Luke’s earnest and conflicted feelings in this moment. You can tell he’s internally anguished, yet confident about what he needs to do. It’s evident in the expression of his face, the way he struggles to maintain eye contact but also looks into Leia’s eyes intensely. More than anything, it shows in the gentleness and sadness in his voice. Luke has never sounded this sad or serious, and it shows how far he’s come from the impulsive kid he once was. Leia is true to her character in this section, too. Finding out Luke is her brother is something intuitive for her, and it makes sense because the two of them have always had strong feelings for one another, but they didn’t diagnose them correctly until they found out their actual connection. (Otherwise, the chemistry between them in “Star Wars” and the kiss they shared in “The Empire Strikes Back” would not have happened.) Leia is so struck by this discovery that she begs her brother to flee the conflict instead, which shows how much she has grown from her somewhat callous approach to life. Luke is the only family she has, and while she can deal with Vader being her father matter-of-factly (meaning that in Leia’s typical manner, she understands that she can’t change her parentage and simply views Vader as evil), she can’t really bear to lose Luke. And then there’s Han, the one Leia famously accused of not caring about anything. Here, he shows he does care, in the simple gesture of taking Leia into his arms. It’s incredible the way this scene shows the way this classic trio has grown and how they now get strength from one another. It never manages to not move me. There is no way Leia would have remembered her mom, though, and that’s something the prequels messed up. I find it funny how some people comment on the plot holes in the originals caused by the prequels, as if the originals are to blame. My friends, whenever the prequels do not match up with the originals, that is because the prequels were poorly made, and not the other way around.
@TheRivrPrncess2 жыл бұрын
Yes Leia could have remembered her mom. That is how strong the light side of the Force is. The prequels never messed anything up. In fact, you can see how Leia's eyes are opened at fully receptive to her mother. You can see how Luke's eyes are closed which is possibly why he had no memory of her.
@rezenpm2 жыл бұрын
Incredibly well acted, peak moments for all three characters at once in such an amazing serene setting and such a powerful turning point in the story where Luke finally accepts his fate but not before Leia accepts the truth with grace and humanity, and finally Han lets go of his jealousy and accepts his true love for Leia. Seriously can't get through this scene without tears.

The subtlety of Carrie Fisher’s acting as he is explaining why he must confront Vader is SO powerful. Her sniffle at 2:53 when he says “he won’t turn me over to the Emperor” … she loves her brother so much and struggles to keep her composure at the very thought of the Emperor getting his hands on him … she listens with overwhelmed, conflicting emotions as he states with such conviction that their father can be brought back … she doesn’t know how to believe that Vader could ever be anything but a monster, yet a part of her can’t help but secretly hope that she may see her real father … think of how many times throughout her life she must’ve wondered about her biological parents and dreamed she may somehow know them one day. But the memories of torture and of Alderaan are still fresh. She’s torn in two. It’s all conveyed in her eyes and facial expressions as she gazes at him.

This scene is so well done. Luke wanting to know what he could about their mother and tell Leia why he is leaving to face Vader, being brother and sister, telling her goodbye in case if he was not going to make it out alive. One of my favorite scenes in the Star Wars Trilogy. Thanks for uploading. ❤️❤️❤️

@@stolasgoetia93 We did not see it, but no doubt, after his arrival back with his father's body, Luke further explained to his sister that her father was, not really Vader but was called Anakin and all he presently knew about him.

@@alphaxan8175 which, I'll agree with and remark on 4 years after you posted this: And that's fine. I think it kind of shows that one's struggle with resisting the dark side is never truly finished. Moments of weakness will hit almost anyone. Especially when you're a mega powerful wizard and you unwillingly see visions of the future of this little brat turning into a murderous psychopath. Themes of fate and destiny are pretty heavy in Star Wars. (The OT at least. The PT tried to make it scientific by letting you count powerlevels of force in one's bloodstream, rofl.) So to answer this in more of a cheap manner? Luke's fate with Vader is just simply different from what it was with Kylo. But Vader was also in a completely different place from Kylo when Luke is in their lives. Vader: Already evil by someone else's doing. Showed he was unable to kill Luke in their last encounter. And with an ultimate showdown on the Death Star, this was all going to end one way or another. Honestly, the only thing being on the DS did was ensure that Vader/Palpatine wouldn't be more hands on in either of the other battles. The Death Star blows up regardless of who wins between Luke/Vader. Kylo: About to be evil by Luke's doing; this is him gripping with his own failures. And unlike Vader in which there was a very definitive 'last stand' moment. the future for Kylo was still murky and long. Luke couldn't really afford to fail here. That 'leniency' he had on the Death Star was no longer in play.

@@IRanOutOfPhrases Yeah, I'm always bothered by people saying he "tried to kill Kylo", I mean, did we watch the same movie? 😭 I like the arc of Luke in Episode VIII (even tho they kinda messed it up in Episode IX because producers were like "Nooo, erase the script and do a new one based on what people say in Reddit, we need this movie to be more liked" and did... well, Episode IX), I don't understand most of the complaints. Also I remember people complaining about Leia "suddenly" being Force sensitive, like, come on, it is very clearly said in the original movies, mostly in this scene actually XD
@IRanOutOfPhrases5 ай бұрын
@@invenciblefolgore6405 ESB even gives you a scene of Leia & Luke talking telepathically. (Albeit, this was before they decided Leia was a Skywalker as well, as I think that only was made final when it came to write RotJ. Happy accident) One thing I should have made more clear too: Luke wasn't dealing with his own failings in RotJ. Vader was never his fault. Luke just needed to be Luke to 'survive.' In TLJ, he's facing his own failure head-on. It's a completely different dynamic. If he let's Kylo become darkside, Luke has the Force foresight to KNOW that will lead to the deaths of so many others. And that's blood squarely on Luke's hands, especially if he has a chance to stop it. And sure enough, by not handling Kylo, Kylo goes onto be a key part of the starkiller base. Honestly? I'm not so sure that stopping Kylo before he could do that IS an evil move, lol. Its essentially the age-old question: If you had a time machine and could 'stop' a certain dictator as a baby, would you do it? None of that dynamic really exists with Vader. He's already bad and it was someone else's fault. And it's not really Luke's responsibility to clean that up. Completely different from what manifested with Kylo. You can stop reading there, but if you're into sports analogies: Its the difference between playing vs coaching. When you're a player, you're really only responsible for yourself. Of course there's pressure to perform well, but so much of it is individual, even on a team sport. You can really only control what you do. When you're a coach? Good lord, the pressure is exponential in comparison. Losing is bad enough as a player. But losing is the worst as a coach. You feel a responsibility for how everyone performs all of a sudden. It's an entirely different mindset when you're in charge of the troops. Luke was playing in RotJ. He was coaching in TLJ.

Watching this scene between Luke & Leia, it just re-emphasizes to me all over again just how magical the characters Han, Luke & Leia were to the original SW's saga. I also add R2D2 and Yodi to that statement too. Having the original main 3 characters gone, it can never be the same for me ever again. For me, it's like when actor Dan Blocker ("Hoss Cartwright") died, Bonanza was never the same. And when Curly was no longer one of the original 3 Stooges, they were never the same either. It didn't help SW either when RJ destroyed Luke's character, and episodes 7 & 8 were not the same/didn't grab me magically like the original trilogy did.
