I recently purchased a marine band deluxe, my first marine band. I figured if I'm going to try one, and like it potentially, why not get the better of the two. I love it, it's beautiful, sounds great, plays great, etc. My issue is I'm coming from a special 20, which I love, but would rather it have the look of the marine band deluxe (open face, side vents, two screws instead of one, less screws in the reed plates, etc.) my big, biggest, almost a deal breaker is the recessed comb of the marine band. It is to recessed and makes draws harder, bends harder, etc. it feels like the "seal" between the comb and my mouth is not as air tight, no matter how much I press my mouth against it, or put my mouth over the harp. the special 20's comb is more prominent, it protrudes more. So it's easier to get the air tight feeling, and makes bending, and drawing in easier. Bending on the SP 20 is super easy, and for a beginner would be a better option when buying a harmonica. The marine band deluxe, or just marine band are beautiful instruments, but will take some adjustments, or getting used to. The special 20 is a perfect harp, especially for someone contemplating harmonica, it would make playing, bending, and overall wanting to seriously consider the harp as an option. I'm sure if I started out on a marine band, I might not be saying this, but it's such a classic harp, and well regarded harp that there was no chance I wasn't going to try one. I'll keep at it and hopefully it will get better, but for now I like the playability of the special 20. I want to like the marine band more, it seems cooler. The special 20 without imperfection, the comb needs to be rounded off at the corners, it could be opened up in front, and a few other things. Nothing a customizer couldn't fix, but it would be nice if one came already like the marine band deluxe does. The marine band deluxe is a better version of the original marine band, that's what the SP 20 needs. The Special 20 deluxe, with all the similar features of the marine band deluxe!

I started playing a normal comb (basic Hohner marine band) and I guess I’m used to it because the recessed comb on the s20 doesn’t feel any better to me, well maybe a little bit but nothing that really changes how I play. My favorite harmonica is the marine band crossover.

The playability between these two harmonicas is enormous. The MB Deluxe delivers easily, but there is a particular sense of reward when you deliver using a std MB.

Hi, the low harps tend to do that on low reeds, because they swing way out and ratlle against the cover. If it really bothers you, play more lightly or bend the cover. The regular Marine Band is my favorite harp. No other sounds quite like it. I don't mind its quirks.

@Selim Alaybeyoglu is that a fun question? If your song is based on 'E' you sureley need key of 'A' on harmonica
@harmonicamastery12 жыл бұрын
If you want to play in 2nd position - very common in blues - use your A harp. If you want to play straight harp of 1st position use your E harp. It depends on the type of music and whether you want to be playing bluesy, country, folky etc. There are 12 positions to choose from but most people use the first three most of the time. Ben

@theflea1123 most likely just slightly more than a regular used marine band depending on the year ... if you can find the year to be pre-1990 its worth a little more than one post-1990 because quality control at hohner was higher back then as compared to now as they only take time to inspect expensive ones carefully ... also the wood in the comb may be a bit dryer giving it a clearer and crisper tone which alot of people admire ... so if its old yes but if fairly new then not much worth

I was looking around the other night for ways to customize harmonicas, and I found something on eHow. KZbin won't let me post the link, but look up "Seal wooden harmonica" and it should come up. I don't know what that would do to the tone, but it's better than giving it a toss. There is a guitarist (Eric Johnson, maybe?) who sands any unseen areas on his guitar to let the wood resonate through the finish. You might want to give that a try too.

not had a chance to play a deluxe, but i have played a Blues harp. and i prefer what you've called the 'rough' edge of the standard MB. and unfortunately as a student in the UK don't have the cash for a deluxe, but much prefer the MB of the BH. good vid though.

@benbluesman283111 жыл бұрын
If you play a C blues it would be better to use a F harmonica, generaly for blues they use second position wich is the 4th of the scale (so you go C-D-E-F). changing positions change the sound you get out of you harp, look on google for more!

if i play my guitar in the key of C , could i use a harmonica in the same key? i play blues so what would be best for me?
@rtineigrihms84224 жыл бұрын
Blues is usually played in the second position of the harmonica, i.e., if you have a C harmonica, the second position would be G. If you play guitar in key of C, then you would need to play blues in C, but since blues is usually played in 2nd position, you will need a harmonica in key of F.

I'm using Regular Pear Wood Marine Band and also Crossover.. Crossover is louder 🔊 than Regular Marine Band.. But I also assume both Marine Band Regular Pear Wood and Crossover are bit louder than Special 20 in comparison according to my opinion. I'm also using Meisterklasse aluminium alloy,Pro Harp,Blue's Harp and Seydel Blue's Session and for practice I use Bluesband in complete set..But one Harmonica in A mood I had to send it back in Trossingen for tuning because the 6th & 7th Hole's were out of tune..I also play Hohner Chromatic Meisterklasse 7565 14 Hole's,Hohner 64 280 c 16 Hole's + 29 YEAR'S old 24 Hole's Tower Chromatic. I began playing in 1980s with Hohner Golden Melody in C & E moods..I'll be 50 years old the coming January of 2019..Harmonica's Model's I think depend on from individual to individual and what they play..Like for example I tried Hohner ACE and Super 64 X But finally settled down for 64 280 c and Meisterklasse 7565 14 Hole's as for Chromatic.. We can use spaceship metal,Plastic and alloys to upgrade various Harmonica's but it still depend on player to player's abilities but not the high tech Musical 🎶 INSTRUMENT'S.. IF that was the case then Late Jimi Hendrix couldn't have played his guitar 🎸 like he did back in the day's despite so called technical marvel or effect they offer nowadays which still cannot equal and never will like Hendrix. 😂..Believe me every Tom,DICK and HARRY can't become Michael Schumacher on same vehicle that he drove in the 💫 circuit. So is So or there will be no other Howard Levy or Larry Adler and of course not to forget the bygone Black MUSICIAN'S as father of Blue's, Ragtime and Jazz 🎺 Music.

Chris there are 12 keys in music C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B so you choose the key according to the song/recording/band. I suggest you start with one in C. Keep it simple.

So I have a Hohner Marine Band in the key of C that I've resently purchased. The only problem being that the draw reed on the 2nd hole seems obstructed and out of key when I breathe in on it. Here's the answer from Hohner's own Steve baker: 'Physically the reed plates are identical in terms of materials and construction. Screw holes etc. are also the same. The difference lies in the fine tuning, MBDL is closer to JI whereas Xover is closer to 12TET.'
