Two photography killer features of the S5ii weren't mentioned in the video, IMHO: - Programmability. The S5ii has up to 10 custom modes that literally remember _everything_, including the exact position of the focus point selection and the definition of custom buttons. The S5ii also never forgets or overrides the settings when you enter a custom mode, but always returns to the settings exactly as they were saved. This means that you can have a completely different camera in each of the 10 different custom modes - for example, a video camera in C1, a stills camera with Nikon focus ring orientation and Nikon-compatible custom button definitions in C2, a stills camera with a Canon-like configuration in C3, a stills camera for manual focus lenses on C4, and so on. AFAIK, only Olympus offers similarly 'radical' custom modes. - Pinpoint focus. This was already available on the old S5, but it's by far the most precise autofocus I've seen on any camera when shooting stills in single AF. You can set the focus point to a precise point on the screen, the camera will display an electronically magnified picture-in-picture while focusing, and in the magnification you can see that precise focus has been achieved on a specific detail. In addition, the camera has a much more solid and comfortable feel, bigger buttons and dials, better/less plasticky materials than comparable Sony, Canon and Fuji cameras, in my opinion.

Is there a way to use one type of af with the shutter button and program the back button for another. Like in the R5 I have the front button as single point and the back button eye AF. very interested in this camera I’m just afraid in high demand situations like wedding I won’t have backup option if I’m using tracking.
@AIP4042 ай бұрын
@@sols9449It is not possible, sadly a major issue at least for me, and what keeps me away from it. It can be done with all the other systems, here your only option is to configure the custom banks with the different focus settings, but you can't assign a mode to a button, you need to press a button to call the bank selection and then cycle through them. If you are into photography, better go for another brand, pana focus is video.

Something I appreciate about you, Benj, is how you talk about autofocus. There aren't nearly enough people saying about any given camera, "it's not the very best on the market, but it will provide great results up to [X] threshold, and that's good enough for [Y and Z] types of photography." So many reviews suggest, implicitly or explicitly, that if it's not bleeding edge tracking, it won't be good enough to take pictures of your friends on a camping trip. I appreciate your realism. Also, for anyone who *is* mostly a photographer with a little video, I personally feel like the S5 II is only bested in terms of value by the original Canon R6, which can be had in mint condition on various camera forums for like, $1100. Absolutely insane value there.

I’ve been using the S5II as my main hybrid camera since February 2023 and it does both really well. Honestly, people are sleeping on this camera for photo and it’s probably in part because all of the influencers saying it’s a video camera when it’s a hybrid. I’m glad to see some S5II photography content from you. There needs to be more photography content and I think you’re the only one out there doing it.

From my perspective, as someone who's been taking photographs for 50+ years (😳), just about any modern camera is a gift. And so, I'm sure the Lumix has the goods. The only Lumix camera I've ever owned was the G7 I started out with. I enjoyed it, at the time I was much newer though. I just don't want to make a purchase I'll regret for any reason especially since resale where I live would be nigh impossible. So I'm thinking I'll stick with Nikon and get the Z7II. I'm very familiar and comfortable with Nikon now and it has everything I'd want minus the full on video capabilities of the S5ii but that's fine for now, I'm sure it would be good enough for video for the moment. Definitely a step up from the Z30 on every front.

I own a Lumix S5 (I) and for me it’s already a great camera, as I am a mere hobbyist who doesn’t shoot sports or wildlife. Yes, the AFc could be more sticky, but even on this older model without PDAF it is actually quite okay. Other than that I was thinking about buying the S5II, but it is a little bit bigger than the S5(I) which is already on the fence of being too big for me and it appears to be even more videocentric (and I almost never shoot videos). Both were reasons not to buy the S5II. But if Panasonic would bring a camera with a concept similar to the A7cII or A7cR, I would be highly interested.

I shoot photos (and video) for weddings. I use my Canon R5 for photos and two S5iis when I shoot video. I started with Canon and know that system inside and out for photos. On a video interview shoot I only had my S5iis. I needed to take a quick headshot for the edit. I used the S5ii to take the photo and was surprised at how great it turned out. The only reason I don’t use the S5ii more for photo is lenses. I’ve got every lens needed for wedding work on Canon (RF 28-70, 16-35, RF 35, RF 70-200, RF 85, 100). I don’t have that full complement on the S5ii and it would not be cost effective to add a complete system of lenses on the LMount. I generally use zooms on L mount and as a prime or near prime photo snob likely won’t use the S5ii as my primary photo cam, but not because it can’t work. It can work very well for photos.

What are the missing things in this camera to make it more like a photography camera? By the way I had this camera for a week for the following reasons: - Video autofocus is better than the stills autofocus - False positives when the camera focus is locked on according to the indicators - Focuses on human body parts when the rectangle shows the whole body. (i.e. blurry head) and again, another false positive - AF is good when the "contrast" is good and PDAF is not always on due to light conditions (Manual also confirms this) - AF with 20-60mm lens is terrible compared to 50mm Overall, keep rate is 50% at its best. Try A7 IV vs S5II AF test on objects that does not have super clear contrast differences and S5II will fail instantly.
@benjhaisch2 ай бұрын
Yeah, I find the video AF to be spot on where the photo AF is still behind a bit. Still usable, not as “sticky” I thankfully haven’t had any more false positives than I’d expect. AF on an f3.5-5.6 lens being worse than an f/1.8 lens makes sense to me at least considering how much more light can hit and how much more shallow the DOF is to make the differences between in and out of focus more obvious.
@benjhaisch2 ай бұрын
And yes, I’d still say the A7IV is better across the board for the way that I use autofocus (AF-C & spot tracking) in photo mode. Doesn’t mean that the S5II isn’t good, but it’s just not at the same level yet imo.

So freaking cool man. If this thing had a few more MP I really think it would be a photo beast. Baking in the preset to the file is a game changer - I can imagine a world where that Leica SL3 sensor slides into a Lumix and the photo world erupts. ;)

Was having a chat the other day with a friend about the Lumix team. I kind of chuckled at the thought and then caught myself wondering if this tech would make itself into a higher MP sensor. Imagine a world where we're all fighting for a spot on a Lumix team. @@benjhaisch

I Wish someone would describe the quality of using the evf how comfortable it is with your eye, what coverage you see etc. I look thru the evf when I shoot photos or videos. Every review of cameras I see, literally all of them on KZbin (Gerald undone you are the most guilty) skip reviewing the evf experience as a shooter. It’s the single most annoying thing as people talk about every thing else except this one feature that makes or breaks the experience of using the camera. I guess I have to drive all the way to nyc, go to b & h and stick my eye in it. 😂

The AF is mediocre at best. My old a7s3 dominated my s5ii in the AF and rolling shutter department, even my old A7r3 has way more reliable autofocus for photos. With that said, the s5ii is so enjoyable to use with exception of the jumpy confused AF

Don’t mean to be a dick, but you get a camera for free and the video is not sponsored? I’m quite tired of hearing KZbinrs say things like that
@benjhaisch17 күн бұрын
The way this worked specifically is that I was sponsored to make a prior video but obviously wanted to add the context of that to this one. I was under no obligation to make this video, but since I did have it now, I wanted to make an updated thing on my own. So that’s sort of how some of this stuff works. If I had gotten this specifically to make this video or even any future videos specifically then yes, it’d totally be sponsored. Hope that makes sense. I try really hard to be above board on all of these things, so feel free to let me know how it could have made more sense.
@RaulCasquet17 күн бұрын
Thank you for the explanation. It does not feel very genuine when most KZbinrs out there are getting lots of free stuff and then claim they are not being paid while they are basically making an ad for a certain brand.
@benjhaisch17 күн бұрын
@@RaulCasquet for sure, I think that’s the wrinkle here is that it’s definitely not an ad, it’s my actual opinion that I decided that make on my own. But it’s definitely true that a ton of people aren’t nearly as clear as I believe they should be on this front.
