I picked up the Moment Cinebloom diffusion filters a bit ago and have gotten tons of questions about them, so I went out and gave them a try with my Fujifilm X100V at night. I'm also testing out some new presets, so if you read this, let me know how they look. I also filmed the intro and outro of this video on the new X-E4 and 18mm f/2.

This is the video I needed. Thank you. I wasn't sure which filter I wanted to buy. I used to use a version of this technique I learned from reading about the photographer Robert Farber; he would use a UV or SKY or a clear filter and spray hairspay up in the air. He would then hold the filter underneath the particles as they fell. How close to the spray and for how long you held it there determined how much diffusion you would get on your filter. I used it shooting a RB67 back in the true film days. Works very well.

I’m not too sure about these. I have a Tiffen Black Pro Mist 1/4 basically glued to my X100V and it gives a similar effect to the 10% but retains contrast too which is nice. I guess it depends on the look you’re going for.

As an owner of the 20% cinebloom, I also regret not getting the 10%. For both photos and videos taken with the 20% attached, I’m left underwhelmed when going through them after a shoot. Mostly with video. Too milky looking across the whole frame for me. Far too soft. Plus the effect becomes way too pronounced at longer focal lengths. The RAW photos, on the other hand, can be edited to a larger degree to bring them into line with what I had envisioned

What's old is new again Benj...for years we spent thousands of dollars on Hasselblad/Zeiss lenses for our 500 Series cameras. Then we used cheap Cokin drop-in diffusion filters and matte boxes to apply a vignette, thus making custom negatives, rather than pay the lab to make custom prints and retouch. Standard practice in the portrait and wedding world. Hilarious in hindsight as Zeiss was working so hard to give us sharp lenses that didn't vignette.
