Astigmatism a.k.a Natural mist filter for your eyes. It helps soften the skin tone, creates beautiful halation around the light sources. I don't wear glasses because I hate the sterile clean image projected onto my retina.

I’ve watched so many video’s regarding dream fx/pro-mist/cine bloom filters to figure out if it’s something for me as a fashion videographer. So many video’s here on youtube are so misleading I feel like. Your video really helped me out a lot. Thank you for showing the daylight (with shallow depth of field) and the night sequence. This is super well done and resembles the (correct) use of this filter 100% in my opinion. Fact: your video made me decide to buy this filter. Thank you!

I don't shoot video, but I've collected some mist filters for my photography. I agree with you on different strength best suited to different light conditions. There is no "best" option. It's also depends on aperture: the more you stop down, the heavier diffusion you can use. A point that I think should be emphasized: these things do not make your picture "better", but rather allow you to have something unique if you able to do work in post. My current night time fav is white, not black, pro-mist 1. The color of bloomed lights looks more coldish-ethereal than with black pro-mist. I'm on the hunt to add a 1/2 white pro-mist for daylight. For the daylight I think I slightly prefer Kenko black pro-mist 1 to Tiffen black pro-mist 1. Again, it comes down to color: kenko color feels a touch more pleasant to me. I have Tiffen black pro-mists ranging from 1/8 to 1 and I advise to skip 1/8. It's better to go big, than to go subtle. Even in strong daylight I'd go for 1/4. I also have Tiffen white pro-mist 3... maybe someday I'll figure it out, but for now I prefer to pretend it just doesn't exist. Most of my mist filter experiments is not online, but I have some published. Some of the recent shots in this album were made by me with mist filters: www.flickr.com/photos/curry-hexagon/albums/72157712025509062 As for the Moment stuff, I would have been interested in checking them out if they came up with 52 and 49 mm options, which they didn't.
@JasonLawrenceNoel6 ай бұрын
I know this is from 3 years ago ;) but thanks for sharing. I recently found that a stronger strength around 1 can look muddy with some of my zoom lenses but with my faster primes they look great 🤷♂️ guess the contrast and sharpness on some of these new primes are just nuts and “cuts through” / keeps a sharper image. Any similar findings on this? Any new filters you have tried out or like to use?

Tbh I can definitely see why the BPM is more expensive, they just look so much better. Moment really should have limited the halation to the highlights instead of just spreading it over the frame. I am considering buying a BPM 1/8 and the Moment 20% though.
@impatrickt4 жыл бұрын
truevilmeow here’s the problem with BPM though. They retain contrast but I would rather shoot the fade so I have that option rather than shoot crunchy and try to fade in post (which usually adds noise from lifting shadows) you can get your blacks wherever you want in post with the Moment because it’s lifting the entire waveform.
@Deaddinoproductions4 жыл бұрын
Great review! The price difference compared to Tiffen may be pretty small depending on what strength and filter size you’re buying. I own several strengths of the 77mm BPM, most of which I managed to pick up for around $70-85 each. But prices seem to fluctuate and you can’t always find them for that cheap. Glad there are other companies entering the ring with some good quality alternatives.

Just a footnote. The halation on cinestill has nothing to do with the chems, but lack of the REMJET layer ECN-2 films have as standard. If you shoot Kodak 500T and process in ECN-2 you won’t get that because it is not supposed to look that way. Pro tip is to cross process C-41 films in ECN-2
@impatrickt4 жыл бұрын
Carl Lovén i believe you can remove remjet from any film if you’re tenacious.

Patrick Tomasso no. Because one ECN-2 films has it. It was mainly meant for cinema cameras so the flashes in the machinery wouldn’t affect the film, nor reflect into the camera housing.

1. Smart guy. The split inbetween day & nighttime usage is very smart, as these are really being translated differently by the filter 2. I think there is a relation between your focal length + and the strength of filter you're using [I think the wider the lens- the stronger the filter you'll need] 3. Do your blacks get milky-er with that 20% filter on?
@impatrickt4 жыл бұрын
eladbari Thanks! I’m not sure about the focal length relation - but Gerald Undone has a really good video describing how diffusion filters work. In terms of “milky blacks” you will get more faded shadows with the 20% but they are quite easy to bring back in post with some contrast.
