I knnow this was written by Prima, but I can't imagine why anyone would recommend this version over that of The Benny Goodman Orchestra with Gene Krupa playing drums, Harry James, Ziggy Ellman, and Chris Griffin on trumpet and Benny Goodman's clarinet solo. Far, far superior to this version. I highly suggest you check out the Goodman version, live at Carnegie Hall

The song Sing, Sing, Sing in this movie, Swing Kids, 1993, is the 1936 Benny Goodman studio recording with Gene Krupa on toms. There are several recordings on KZbin that are live. Perhaps one of those is what you are referencing.

One of my favorite songs. The live 1938 Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall concert of Sing Sing Sing is a must listen. It's the same music but longer with more instrument solos including an incredible one on the piano. Also worth watching is this song in a Bob Fosse Broadway production of "Dancin''" performed at the Tony Awards show. Much smaller band, not bad, but the focus is on the Dancin'. Really special with Fosse's brand of sexuality built in to jazz and tap dancers. Really cool.

So GLAD you enjoyed THIS! The movie clip you watched was from 1985's "Swing Kids", about 3 best friends in 1939 Nazi Germany. Though the music and dancing are incredible, their story is tragic. Hitler banned all music by Jews and Blacks, so the Hamburg teens held secret sort of rave parties, and quickly had to switch to doing a polka instead of the Jitterbug. Please be sure to hear a vocal version of this tune by the Andrews Sisters or Louis Prima himself. When it first came out, it took up both sides of a 78rpm record, because it ran so long! And dancing to it is almost a nightmare because it's so fast and so long. Make sure you check out the magnificent 1954 "The Glenn Miller Story" starring Jimmy and June Alyson. You will laugh and you will cry. And you will yell out: "PENNSYLVANIA SIX FIVE THOUSAND!" every time you hear a telephone ring...trust me... 😂

Shawn, this is written by Louis Prima, but it is actually the Benny Goodman Band's version from 1936 thats playing it here. That's why you didn’t hear the lyrics. I just listened to to the Goodman record from 1936 and this is definitely what your hearing. Not sure where the video comes from, but you can tell from the colors it isn't one of the early color movies from the thirties. Still a great performance of the song, many do prefer Goodman's version to Louis's.

My Grandpa LOVED Big Band music! He loved Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Count Basie and many others. His word for it was "keen" (40s slang for "cool"). I remember when I was a little kid, back in the 70s, he would play his records and would show me some of his dance moves from back then. Sometimes I would dance with him as he tried to show me how to do them. Play this music to any little kid and they will dance like crazy to it. I have loved this kind of music ever since and am very glad to have been exposed to it at a very young age. This is awesome music and I've seen young people can't stop from moving with the beat when they hear it in a movie or on a TV show. This music is infectious.

For folks who enjoy this type of music there is a radio station plying this on Saturday mornings. It is 90.9 FM WDCB Public Radio broadcasting from College Of DuPage (Chicago suburb). They can be heard on the internet live and have an archive. The programs on Saturday are: When Jazz Was King and right after is Swing Shift. After that they play four hours of old time radio(‘30s - ‘50s)called Those Were They Days.

Swing took over the world during World War II! Incredible energy and unbelievable talent. Louis Prima was a standout performer. He had a very unique singing style (interestingly, not featured on "Sing, Sing, Sing!"). Check out his duet with Keeley Smith on "That Old Black Magic". For my generation, he will always be remembered as the voice of King Louie in the 1967 version of The Jungle Book.

louis prima did the voice for king louie the orangutan in the jungle book, and sang the song "i want to be like you (the monkey song)". speaking of disney, back in the 1990s there was a swing/big band revival, and i would go to disneyland every saturday night to watch big bands play at the carnation plaza gardens stage. sing sing sing was always the big song of the night. the dancers would gather in a circle on the floor, and couples would take turns showing off their moves in the center during the song. people really got into it by dressing in vintage 30s/40s clothing. this song was like the stairway to heaven of the swing era. a timeless classic.

You may also be familiar with part of this piece from your childhood - from Bugs Bunny. Bugs Bunny had a lot of classical & classic music such as this, used in that cartoon - INCLUDING this. Sing, Sing, Sing DID originally have lyrics with it - but it was TERRIBLE with the singing added. The instrumental alone was so good without it that I would be SHOCKED if you ever heard it from ANYBODY without DELIBERATELY hunting an OLD version of it somewhere. (NOT worth it except possibly for curiosity sake.)

What a terrific song and one of the greatest songs of all time! However, I do prefer the Benny Goodman version over this one. They are basically the same, but Goodman's version has more punch and is a better engineered recording. As for classical music, there are many awesome pieces, but there is a fairly modern piece that bridges classical and jazz, and became one of the most important pieces of music of the 20th century: Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue," conducted by the great Leonard Bernstein. The piece is 17 minutes long, but feels like 8, and you'll probably recognize certain passages, but the piece is literally thrilling, with both soaring drama and transcend beauty. If any "classical" piece deserves to be reacted to, it's Rhapsody In Blue, conducted by the inimitable Leonard Bernstein. Magical. ❤✌

The title of this clip from the 1993 movie Swing Kids is confusing and misleading. Louis Prima wrote Sing, Sing, Sing in 1936, hence the attribution. This was actually a cover version. It's a band that was put together specifically to do a recording for the movie "Swing Kids". It's not a 30s or 40s recording. This has a much fuller, clearer sound and is at a slightly faster tempo than any version from the 30s and 40s. If you want to hear origianal recordings you have to be careful. Many acts of the 40s and 50s re-recorded their songs in the 70s for various reasons. Mostly to get more royalties from the sales of greatest hit albums and such. Well actually this was done for songs of the 60s and 70s, being re-recorded in the late 70s and 80s. Some pretty good, sounding indistinguishable from the original, others not so much.
