Gene Krupa was called the King of Swing. Buddy Rich was called Mr Big Band and/or DRUM Extraordinaire. Two completely different drum styles and feel. Krupa from Chicago, Rich from Brooklyn. Their drum techniques were totally different. They set the bar (skill level, creativity) for inspiring drummers. They were both gifts to the music world and humanity.

When i was a 12 year old Clarinet student, my Grandmother offered me " Benny Goodman at Carnegie Hall 1938" Vinyl. I know that there is happening something. Sing sing sing and life goes to a party and the jam session with the Basie and Ellington guys makes me cry yeah and jump around ! Krupa makes me cry. My only wish was to go to the states and meet Gene and Benny. My grandma was in prison because she said " Swing heil". Best regards from Germany !

Krupa played at my high school for an "assembly". He was fantastic. It was supposed to be some kind of educational thing. And it was. If I remember correctly Gene was from Chicago. But at this assembly he said he was from Diamond Town, PA. Which is a little village attached to the Borough of Mt. Carmel, PA. A hard coal region town in the oldest mountains on earth. Same little village were Machine-gun Kelly died in a shot-out with the police. I don't know why he said that. Maybe it's true. Maybe he played for the assembly at Mount Carmel Area High School because when he was a little kid he lived there. I really don't know. But he did say it.

Never seen that clip. Loved it and the technical drum deets

The movie is called "Beat the Band". The guy yelling is comedic actor Donald MacBride; he played a lot of characters who were angry or yelled a lot.

Gene Krupa took lessons from Moeller and, when Chapin asked Gene for lessons he recommended he go to Moeller (Gene was older than Jim). Gene did get some lessons from Jim but that was in the late 1960s, when Gene was in a short retirement because he felt he wasn’t playing well. Gene never gave lessons to Keith Moon. They never even met.

This video was from my channel, and you can find many more Krupa videos on my channel, as well as Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Joe Morello, etc.

Escuchaste el primero de los solos de Gene en el tema Don´t be that away tocando para Benny Goodman en el concierto del Carnegie Hall de 1938? Tremendo!!!!

Buddy Rich was a machine on the drums. Gene Krupa’s drumming had heart - machines don’t have hearts 😉 While Rich could dazzle you with his technical ability, Krupa’s drumming (IMHO) was more “musical”

Exactly why I prefer Krupa. Wow rich is probably the best technical drummer ever, Krupa puts his soul in his drumming.

Back when a drummers could lead a band, thanks man. For me GK is a drummer you want to play with, BR not so much. The track is most likely too long for a reaction but the Carnegie hall sing sing sing is a master class on dynamics and tempo in a pre click track world.

Versatile or what. Performances like this just ooze class and not just from Gene.

Don't skip over like that, it feels really disrespectful. Are we really SO busy and impatient, we can't just immerse ourselves in the scene clip and enjoy a few minutes of the "Golden Age"? Even if a good number of the band/musician-centric movies from back then were a bit "corny", they're still a joy to watch.

I consider myself a student of Krupa s work. I actually produce and perform a show The Gene Krupa Story Live show... Primarily Gene was a first to do many things. Strip down the drum set to the basics, 4 piece set. With his first recording the bass drum was played as part of the drum set. Different from classic or marching bands which has several players in the section. Gene was at first self taught, The drum set had just come into invention by Baby Dodds Chick Webb, the early players. On Broadway he played by ear and Players like Glenn Miller would sing a melody and Gene would memorize it. (Gene and Buddy Rich had uncanny ability to memorize alit of music ) When stardom hit Gene with Benny Goodmans success, he studied with Sanford Gus Moeller. Then later more theory and percussion with a philharmonic percussionist.. Gene was a first to elevate the drum set to high regard, play featured drum solos attract many MANY people to jazz. As the first Super Star drummer he received a royalty from Slingerland Drum Company. Until Ringo in 1964 more kids were drawn to drumming because of his work.. And the only movie star to come out of Jazz, he made more movie/TV appearances than all others. I commend you on your podcast, I meant no insult just wanted to set the record straight. Cheers AvB
